Terraria has sold over 30 million copies

Terraria released nearly 10 years ago, to the delight of many players worldwide. But just how many players bought and enjoyed the 2D sandbox world of Terraria? Apparently over 30 million, reported developer Re-Logic, as it revealed sales data for the game. 14 million copies of the game were purchased on PC, while just over half--7.6 million--came from console players. Meanwhile, Terraria has sold 8.7 million units on mobile devices. That won't be the end for Terraria either, as the Journey's End update is still slated for release soon.

Well I know I'm responsible for four of those purchases either through gifting or getting copies on different platforms, not to mention some of my friends doing the same thing.

I was gifted this game because i like (jrpgs, rpgs and games where you collect and build things.) Played it for about 15 minutes and never touched it again. Its one of those games that i just couldnt get into.

I always find it odd people proudly proclaim they've never heard of something absurdly popular like it's an accomplishment to live under a rock.
Terraria is great. I'm not surprised they've sold so many copies, i'm more surprised they haven't capitalized on that and made a Terraria 2. Starbound was an okay attempt but had 1/10,000th the content so it fell flat.

It blows my mind that they sold more copies on mobile than console.
It's not remotely surprising. Almost everyone has a phone. Nowhere near as many own a console, and a fraction of that games on PC. That's why mobile gaming is booming.

I'll be honest that I wasn't aware Terriaria was on phones, and since 2013, even. It's also on Fire TV OS...which just sounds weird, but I suppose it's a low-spec enough game to run well even on streaming devices.

If you can run Homebrew, then you can play this for free on that same machine.

I have over 2800 hours on the game, granted 150 or so are probably idle time. Currently waiting for Journey's End before my next play through. It's an awesome game, though a lot of players find it difficult to get started since there is no directive goal, and there is little in the way of in-game guidance. So from what I understand, a lot of players end up quitting before they've even played for two hours. There are also those that, to this day, still get heated about the whole "Minecraft vs Terraria" since Minecraft fans basically just see Terraria as a "2D Minecraft Copy". Really, both games are completely different experiences, as Minecraft has a heavier emphasis on creativity, and Terraria has more emphasis on progression and fighting bosses -- while still adding creativity for structures and arena-building for handling certain bosses.
