GBAtemp's Folding@Home Team

Folding Banner.png

Hello, fellow Tempers! Some of you might not know this, but our website started a Folding@Home team whole 13 years ago. What is Folding@Home, you ask? Let me explain.
[prebreak] [/prebreak]
Folding what?

Folding@Home, or F@H, is a distributed computing system which allows everyday users to participate in research by Stanford University, lending their computing power to help with the process of protein folding. By running simulations on your computer you help better understand many diseases, including cancer, ALS, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s, Influenza and more. This includes simulations related to COVID-19, and we believe that if we come together as a community, our combined computational power can help.

How do I join?

It's actually extremely simple - all you need to do is download the client, set it up on your PC and... start folding! You can either do so anonymously, or you can set up a nickname and join our team - our ID is 53596. COVID-19 is a fairly new virus, so it does not have a separate category just yet. In order to be assigned simulations related to it, you must select "Any Disease" in the client. The client is currently compatible with Windows, macOS, Debian, Mint, Ubuntu, Redhat, Centos and Fedora so you can easily find the most suitable version for your setup.

Joining our team is as simple as typing in your desired nickname,
our Team ID and requesting a Passkey to verify your registration

I bet you're asking yourself "do I have to run this thing at full blast". The answer is no, F@H will not interrupt your valuable game time if you don't want it to. If you prefer, you can limit F@H to only using your resources when idle, or to minimise the amount of resources used by the client to a desired amount so that your game time remains uninterrupted. F@H will use your remaining CPU/GPU cycles up to saturation without otherwise affecting other tasks. You don't even need a particularly beastly computer - in the picture below I'm actually running it on a laptop - it's folding!

IdleSetup.png IdleDesktopSetup.png
F@H gives you the option to only fold when idle, both in the Web and Desktop clients

Once your identity is set up and you've adjusted your settings to your liking, all you have to do is press "Start Folding" - you will be assigned a Work Unit your hardware is capable of handling in a reasonable amount of time and the client does all the rest. Your computer will continue to fold until the Work Unit is complete or you manually stop the workload. It's easy!

I'm a developer, what can I do?

Up until recently, Folding@Home was also possible on Android devices and the PS3. Sadly, the PS3 application and the Android application are no longer maintained, however Sony has graciously released the source code on GitHub and the project continues as open source. This is particularly relevant to users who would like to contribute their mobile processing power, or perhaps with enough work, contribute the processing power of their consoles via Switchroot/LineageOS or other means. The GitHub repositories for the Android branch and the Main branch can be found here:

With a little work, these applications could possibly be ported to devices that were never intended to run them - that's where scene developers come in. If you think you can help, try your hands at some real anti-virus software - we can hack this thing.

We live in trying times, but we're not powerless - we're all the strongest when we come together. If you want to help, consider joining the team today!

To be fair, they've moved on from collecting data to analysing it - they haven't finished, they've only just begun.

you're right. i shouldn't have been so dramatic about it. I have been running SETI via BOINC since day 1, and im a little bummed to see it go. I read that it might take years to process all of the data from BOINC users.

Is the delay over 24 hours?
Did 2x cpu WU's and 1x gpu WU and really didnt get anything on the team page, and the web client just says 1700, my name says i'm also in pcmr https://stats.foldingathome.org/donor/Joe88 (but im guessing thats just somebody using the same name in pcmr since they allow dupe names and such)

Yes, the stats server hasn't been refreshed yet, they're working on it. Right now they're just desperately building up to meet demand. The stats you're seeing on the client are your points, a percentage of them will go to the team.

Awe man I was hoping to set my PS3 up to help.
The PS3 became unsustainable per watt, it only pushed 1000 PPD when the average CPU or GPU can push multiple times that. Even my laptop oscillates between 2000-10000, and it's probably 10 years old at this point. :P

Just joined! Although I don't have a dedicated GPU so my CPU is bruteforcing through it. It is not as efficient as I want it to be, but let's hope it gets something useful out of it!

Happy to contribute my resources here instead of my work team.

Hard time getting WUs, but I've got a Ryzen 9 3950X and an RTX 2080 Super going full steam ahead in this box, at least while I'm not using it.

I also have a Broadwell-based Xeon with GTX 970 in a virtualization box I just built. Gotta get that online and I can probably contribute those resources as well.

I've been running Folding@home for years, on my desktop and on whatever work laptop I use, only on light processing though so it completes a work unit every day or so.
All the same, that's over 3300 work units for the GBATemp team, and any new work going forward is going to be for researching COVID-19 treatment, I hope.

I'd heard on the Linus tech tips video that Folding@home saw an increase in users from 30k to 400k or something because of this, I hope that people stay on with the scheme and continue to donate their idle CPU cycles. It's much more meaningful than something like cryptocurrency farming.

Status update, everybody!

Tempies hard at work, by @x65943

While the F@H servers are still getting hammered and their pages haven't been updated for days, we do have an update to publish, courtesy of ExtremeOverclocking.com who publish their own statistics based on F@H server data. I have some extremely good news!

Now that is a curve I like to see! Our productivity has absolutely shot through the roof since the posting of this thread! Here are the specifics:
That's a lot of numbers, so let me break it down. Since this thread was originally posted we've accrued 771,560 points, which translated to 142 Work Units! Each of those WU's is a valuable contribution to science - that's a pretty good increase from 1-3 WU's a day, and we've only just begun. Your efforts help forward our understanding of diseases and we can't describe just how much we appreciate your contribution. A big thank you from the GBAtemp.net team - we wish we could provide an up-to-date leaderboard, but sadly they're not yet available. While we're waiting for more detailed results, let's continue this great trend, keep on folding and keep on Tempin'!

so, the house that my wife and i own was built in 1903. houses back then were not built with driveways or garages. wanting a place to work on my projects i built a decent size wooden shed. i didn't want to pull permits to run electrical out to it, so i ended up installing solar panels and all the other bullshit that goes along with it. after professionally tattooing for over 20 years i retired and i planned on working on long time clients in it. but i soon realized that after 20 years it was the last thing i wanted to do. so i mostly have been using it for working on electronics. however i now think im going to drag some of the couple dozen computers just taking up space in my basement and have them running foldit in my shed. if they are running off of solar i think it would be a shame not to. if anyone here also has a solar power setup you might want to consider leaving your computers on and running foldit. i have it running on my gaming rig, my plex server. my office pc, my security cam dvr pc, and in a couple of days as many pc's i can power with my solar panels. i would love to hear about everyone else's setup for running foldit.

That's an interesting twist on "the healing power of the sun", I like it.
