Yeah, I also just went back to rgui.
Tbh I'm done with anything else now. Most of the time I try their shiny new menu, it's broken one way or another. It would be nice to get retroarch looking pretty with thumbnails and everything, but it's a piss about, and it'll literally get broken somehow on the next update.

Fast Forward isn't working for me, I tried everything that I could find online which isn't much, I tried it using VBA Next and mGBA and it isn't working on either

from where exactly? I made sure to change the max speed in frame throttle to 3.0x because it's 0.0x by default, and it is on from wherever i checked
Settings > Input > Hotkey Binds > Fast forward toggle

It's not set by default in the Wii U port, so you'll need to assign it manually.

I just tested it with the VBA Next core and it's working.

Already did, I made ZL toggle and ZR hold, and I made sure to unbind them from being turbo L and R, it still doesn't work, I tested on both VBA Next and mGBA, same result

I don't know why it doesn't work on your install. It should.

Just to provide more info on my setup where it works:

- CBHC Wii U
- Fresh install of RetroArch 1.8.5 (RPX version)
- Launching RetroArch from the forwarder.
- I haven't updated any of the cores (no nightlies since they can be buggy)
- Complete BIOS set for all cores
- I haven't changed any of the default gamepad bindings

Here's mine relative to yours:
- Mocha CFW
- Fresh install, 1.8.5, RPX
- I have the ones I use updated to nightly
- Complete BIOS for the ones I use
I guess the issue would be that I'm using nightly? Some bug in it?

Could be. You can just extract the ones from the 1.8.5 archive and copy them over the updated ones. I don't think you need to do any more than that to revert to the older cores.

On the other hand it could just be a button conflict if the one you assigned fast forward to is already assigned to something else. I used R3 when I tried it. Maybe look through your input and hotkey settings and disable anything else that uses that button.

I just reverted to the older cores, and same problem, I made sure there aren't any key conflicts, I'm lost as to what the issue could be

I seem to be able to get (some) games to work, but is it safe to use the "Save State", "Save To Favorites" or "Remove" options for individual games?

I'm pretty sure there aren't any problem with that, the only weird thing I noticed is that you can still Save State even if you had the hardcore achievements mode turned on, not sure about Load State

I found the problem with fast forwarding, hardcore mode was turned on, which disables fast forwarding, I feel like an idiot right now lmao.

That's what I was thinking, but someone said you would want to remove a game from a playlist in the SD card folder and not in the RetroArch menu, but I don't know why.

I've tried to set this up for many hours and it still doesn't boot. I have tried haxchi and cbhc with no difference. I tried HBL 1.4 and 2.1 with no difference. Last time I tried this was 3/17. I figured I'd wait if there were any bugs fixed in retroarch.rpx.

Anyway, I just tried again now.

I downloaded the 4/4 build of retroarch.
Copied the wiiu/apps/retroarch folder only... to sd:/wiiu/apps/retroarch
created sd:/retroarch/media and copied in the contents of the latest zip of retroarch-assets-master
created sd:/retroarch/cores and copied over nestopia rpx only

I get the same exact outcome I was getting a few weeks ago. I boot retroarch from HBL and it drops to a black screen for roughly 5 seconds, and then drops back to HBL. Then I can't launch any other HB apps either at this time without forcibly rebooting the WiiU. I tried this on 5-6 different SD cards with the same outcome.

It's doing something becuase it's creating a bunch of new folders/files inside sd:/retroarch. In fact, it seems to have moved sd:/retroarch/media to sd:/retroarch/assets. There is no longer an sd:/retroarch/media folder after this "process".

Is there some log file I can look at?
Thoughts?

Not sure, but try launching it without any assets at all. New install, just skip the assets part. The way this thing behaves, like hard crashing if a bios file isn't in the right folder, makes me think you might be able to get it to run if it isn't trying to do whatever dumb crap it's trying to do to your assets.

edit: alternatively, you can try nuking all the files you have and try installing from the Wii U Homebrew App Store.

I'll give it a try, but when I tried to download it from the app store before, it was a huge 2 gb file and it took an hour to get 50%. I killed it and did a simple install with 1 core. Like I said, I did this about 12 times all said and done between the various SD cards I have.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

I just tried again now without the media/assets copied to the SD card.

I downloaded the 4/4 build of retroarch.

Didn't copy any cores.

This time it created the sd:/retroarch folder and a bunch of files/folders inside.
But...
I get the same exact outcome. I boot retroarch from HBL and it drops to a black screen for roughly 5 seconds, and then drops back to HBL.

Unfortunately I'm not knowledgeable enough to know if there's a log. Have you tried the alternate installation method of installing the Retroarch Channel and only copying the retroarch folder as described in the OP? That's what's working for me at the moment.

That did not work for me either. Though, it gave a Retroarch loading screen and crashed promptly after showing that.
