GBAtemp Tournament Week - Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (LAN Play)

mario-kart-8-deluxe-switch-hero.jpg

Banned Switch users, start your engines! The next game in our GBAtemp tournament week is Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, specifically focusing on LAN play so users with banned Switches can still play! (Of course, users with unbanned Switches are also able to participate.) To access LAN play features on Mario Kart 8, just press L + R and click in on the left analog stick on the main menu screen. If you need help setting up LAN play on your console, check out this page here.

The tournament will kick off at 12pm CDT (1pm EDT, 5pm GMT, 4am ACT, 7pm CET). We'll be hosting multiple cups, with the winners of each cup moving onto the next round until we reach the finals. The winner of the final cup will walk away with a $25 gift card! If you're interested in joining, post in the thread below. For clarity's sake, we encourage you to post your Switch's account name when you sign up so we have a clear understanding of who's who.

This is the server we'll be connecting to: kirbfeels.throwbackcountdown.com:11451

To break it down, what you'll need to do if you're a first-timer to LAN-play...
1. Grab the improved version of WinPcap, called Npcap.
2. Grab Switch LAN Play from GitHub. Here.
3. On your Switch, set your IP to 10.13.?.? where "?" represents any range between 10.13.0.1 and 10.13.255.254
4. Now, set your subnet to 255.255.0.0 and your gateway to 10.13.37.1
5. Next, you'll set your primary DNS as 163.172.141.219 and secondary as 207.246.121.77
6. You're almost there! Get the server address in the paragraph above and copy and paste it into the lanplay program on your computer. It should connect.
7. Now, connect to the internet on your Switch, and go to Mario Kart 8.
8. Press L+R+L3 to activate LAN mode.
9. Join the room!

Please make sure you have the latest version of the game (1.7.1)

If this is your first time using LAN play on the Nintendo Switch, we ask you to make sure you can connect to the server before the tournament starts so you have time to troubleshoot any potential issues. Give yourself about 20 minutes to work through the process and avoid any potential delays in getting the tournament started.

And don't worry if you've got a clean Switch and don't want to go through the trouble of setting it up for LAN play, because we'll be having a Mario Kart 8 Deluxe tournament using regular online features this Saturday! Good luck to all of our entrants!

Huh. I didn't know that was possible, first time I heard of this. Are there other games with LAN? And how long we been able to play this online?

Its actually been out a while, This site has a list of the supported games, and instructions on how to set it up. People playing this way have also (thought not sure if Official or what-not) set up a discord* to arrange games too. Games with LAN mode (Mario Kart, Pokemon..) can be done on both Official and CFW Switch's but Games with only local play (Animal Crossing, Diablo..) need a Wireless plugin and therefore need CFW

Does my PC need to be connected to WiFi or can I be hardwired?

Not 100% sure on this, I have it set up on my PC and it's only got LAN, works perfectly (well as it can :D ) for me, no WiFi needed ^^, only trouble ever had was with IP's but once that's set up should be fine

*Couldn't find Original link so created my own, I'm not mod or in any way involved with the server other than being a normal user, the Link also will NOT expire (if I did it right XD)
** I believe this is the original Discord link https://discord.gg/zEMCu5n

Hmm, the only game I have that's on the list is Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Though currently ARMS is free play trial until next week monday. Never needed to use this feature, but I guess it can't hurt to try and just experience it. Not to mention it seems like only nintendo games seem to have the LAN feature.

Shame I've a couple but keep an eye on the list, like with Pokemon new games get added all the time, and thank you also I didn't know ARMS was free this week, gonna check it out now. Also check the Discord too I think there are more games than that are on the site.

Cant find any rooms yet. Is this normal?

The tournament will be starting at 12pm CDT, so in about 36 minutes from when this post goes up. The room will be going up a little bit before that so people have time to make sure they can connect, though. I'll make a post when it's up.

Ok, so despite testing it yesterday and it working fine, we had some slight issues getting set up, so there's been a little change in plans. Instead of using the server originally posted, we're using the server kirbfeels.throwbackcountdown.com:11451, so copy-paste that into the lan-play program. We're also gonna need everyone to make sure they're updated to the latest game version (1.7.1). The OP has already been updated with this information.

Also, since we didn't get as many entrants as initially anticipated, we'll just be doing one larger tournament for the prize money rather than splitting it up into rounds. The room is open now so everyone come join! @Medveitsi @aarti @Blue_Mew @DiJornios
