Hi everybody,
first, a little presentation. I'm Vanack, and i have a Nintendo Wii PAL, softmodded, with USB Loader GX, which works great for most of my backup games (also WiiWare and VC games).
My games are stored in a USB external drive, formatted as FAT32.

I installed Waninkoko's d2x cIOS following these 2 guides:

https://sites.google.com/site/completesg/backup-launchers/installation
https://wii.guide/it_IT/cios.html

It all worked as expected.
My situation is:

cIOS 249: d2x v10 beta52 base57 rev 65535
cIOS 250: d2x v10 beta52 base56 rev 65535
cIOS 251: d2x v10 beta53-alt base58 rev 65535

I also installed IOS236.

My USB Loader GX settings are:

Loader IOS: 58
Game IOS: 250

Some of my games require cIOS 249, so i select it into game options, and it's enough for it to run correctly.

Now, my troubles. I've got issues with VC Japanese games (Blazing Star for instance, which is installed on emuNAND, created dumping my NAND with USB Loader GX) and with Guitar Hero 5 (Guitar Hero World Tour and Guitar Hero III works great).
My questions are:

1) Is it correct to put 58 as Loader IOS? Should i put something else? For instance 57 or 56 if needed? How does they work? Is more important Loader IOS or Game IOS to make a game run correctly?
2) Is it possible to run Japanese VC games on a PAL system? I tried every display mode (force 50hz, force 60hz, force NTSC, force PAL480p, force NTSC480p, region patch, disc etc...) but the game shows a black screen. I read somewhere in this forum that if i set Japanese as main language of my system, it could work. Is that true? Some other advices?
3) Guitar Hero 5 shows a black screen. I tried cIOS 249, 250, 251, but nothing. Then i read here (https://gbatemp.net/threads/guitar-hero-5-black-screen.222635/) that it needs Hermes cIOS, so i installed them using this guide (https://sites.google.com/site/completesg/cios/hermes-cios) with Hermes Installer v4. My situation was:

cIOS 222: base IOS38 merged with 37
cIOS 223: base IOS38
cIOS 202: base IOS38 merged with 60

Then i tried changing Game IOS for Guitar Hero 5, and it didn't work neither with 222, 223 or 202.
Then i read here (https://wii.scenebeta.com/node/49973) that i could use Hermes Installer v5.1, so i used it and now my situation is:

cIOS 202: base IOS60
cIOS 222: base IOS38
cIOS 223: base IOS37
cIOS 224: base IOS57

Then i tried changing again Game IOS but none of them worked.
Then i realized that MAYBE i should put cIOS 222/223 as Loader IOS into USB Loader GX main settings. I did it, but unfortunately now the loader can't recognize my USB drive anymore. Is there any FAT32 compatibility issues with Hermes cIOS? It could work if only my USB drive would be recognized, but i don't know how to test it.
Any other advices?

Thank you and sorry for the long thread, i just wanted to make a long one instead of many shorter threads.

UPDATE! The solutions are:

1) Guitar Hero 5: put the USB drive on port0, select the cIOS with base 56 (which, in my case, is cIOS 250), which is the only working for it. On port1, as Cyan said, it only works d2x cIOS r53, which is unstable and not compatible with many games.
2) Blazing Star (or i suppose any VC Japanese game): install on NAND or install on emuNAND and enable "Region Code Patch" in game options in USB Loader GX.

Hello.:)

Thank you for your nice and detailed Introduction.:)
I will try to answer as good as I can.

Guitar Hero 5 PAL:

The Games works with USBLoader GX (v3.0 r1272) on cIOS 250 with Base 56.
You can use the EmuNAND Save or Real Save Option without Issues. You can maybe try to DISABLE the emuNAND Save Option (Nand Emulation-> OFF) in the InGame Settings from Guitar Hero 5.

There is also no longer need of the Hermes cIOSes for the Guitar Hero Games in generally, they all work on 249/250 (with Bases 56/57) with USBLoader GX.

Your cIOS Setup is good, please also check your USBloader GX Version (r1271 or 1272 should be good).

IOS58:

You can leave (and it is recommended) it as Loader´s IOS.
If you use the Disc Install Option from USBLoader GX and experience Issues you can try to change it to 249 or use an lower Version of the Loader please (r1271).

Good luck and
Thank you.:)

This has maybe to do that some Virtual Console Games displaying 240 lines of Video.
HDTVs are maybe not all able to Display a signal with only 240 Lines.

There are many 240p Conversations from the Japanese VC Games in the Internet.
Please search for yourself,we are not allowed to "hand over" Links.:)

Thank you.:)

Hi Alexander, and thanks for your answer.

The Games works with USBLoader GX (v3.0 r1272) on cIOS 250 with Base 56.

Your cIOS Setup is good, please also check your USBloader GX Version (r1271 or 1272 should be good).

You say that my cIOS setup is good, but in fact it is not, because you say that i need cIOS 250 with base 56, but i have cIOS 249 with base 56 and cIOS 250 with base 57. If so, i should install cIOS 250 with base 56 and overwrite my cIOS 250 with base 57. Is that right?

If you use the Disc Install Option from USBLoader GX and experience Issues you can try to change it to 249 or use an lower Version of the Loader please

I'm not planning to use disc install, so i'm gonna leave IOS58 as Loader IOS, thanks again!

HDTVs are maybe not all able to Display a signal with only 240 Lines.

Oh well, if i manage to do it without much efforts, good. Otherwise, i don't think my life would be bad without Blazing Star XD

You can use the d2x cIOS Installer (like in the Guide) to correct it if you like.
249[56] is the most common Setup and is not a "bad" Setup.
249[57] is recommend because 57 has better Game Compatibility and maybe in your Case it helps.

So,yes you can give it a try if you like please.:)

Good Luck and
Thank you.:)

Hi again Alexander.
Well, a little update.

I managed to run Guitar Hero 5. I discovered, and this could help other people, that the game doesn't run if the USB drive is on USB port #1. The game shows black screen and then resets to Wii Menu.
I switched to USB port #0 and the game started without issues (using cIOS 250 base56 as suggested).

I also managed to run Blazing Star, but only ONCE. I don't know how and why.
The only thing is that i selected Japanese as game language into the options. All i remember is that i was using cIOS 249 and the VIDTV patch was set ON. No particular video setting selected.
The second time i wanted to try to put VIDTV patch OFF and it did not run. So i put again VIDTV patch ON, but then the game did not start anymore.
Then i tried several settings, like cIOS 250 and 251, video options like "Force NTSC480p", "From disc", "Force PAL50/60" and so on. 2 things happen:

1) Sometimes the game shows "A classic controller is needed" and then freezes, forcing me to reset my Wii.
2) Sometimes the game shows "A classic controller is needed", then it shows black screen. I can press the home button and see the pause menu ("Wii Menu" - "Restart" - "Operation manual"), all in Japanese. So i read somewhere that some display issues with NTSC or Japanese VC games can be solved pressing Z+A+2 into the Operations Manual menu, connecting a Nunchuk before starting the game. I did it, and i heard the typical sound (i think that means that it's switching from Progressive to Interlaced), but when i go back to the game, still black screen.

Before trying to set my Wii to 480i as i read somewhere else, i want to know WHY the game started correctly the first time, and WHY it did not start anymore from the second time.

One other thing: i know it sounds strange, but... Could it be that if i start USB Loader GX from Wii menu as a channel (i installed USB Loader GX wad), the game doesn't even start (as i said in (1)), and that if i start USB Loader GX from Homebrew Channel, the game starts but shows black screen as i said in (2)? The version is the same, USB Loader GX 3.0 r1272.

If you can, help me understanding why the game started at first...
Thank you again!

https://gbatemp.net/threads/usb-loader-gx.149922/page-1111#post-6478222

Yes I think it has to do with this.:)

I will have a Look on Blazing Star too if you like.

Good Luck and

Oh, i did not know that procedure to install it as a channel. I remember that i downloaded the wad (forwarder) and installed it with Wii Mod Lite. That's all.
I'll uninstall USB Loader GX and install it again following that procedure.

I will have a Look on Blazing Star too if you like.

Thank you, you're very kind. It could be useful for future users!

Hope to hear you soon :)

You did not have to "uninstall/delete" the USBLoader GX,I hope you now that.:D

By the Way,started several Times, from the Wii System Menu the Game works:

Alright so there's something about USB Loader GX, or maybe it's one of those games which do not work on emuNAND. That's the only explanation...
Thanks :)

Assuming the .WAD File is ok.:(

Works with the USBLoader GX - Direct booted into/started from the Wii´s System Menu and from the Homebrew Channel too, several Starts, all ok:

Which cIOS are you using? Some other options changed?
I think the wad is good, as i said, it worked once...

No nothing changed,USBLoader uses 249 but I this has nothing to do with it.
You can set it 223 for Example (tried it :D)
and it works too.It loads from the Wii NAND/Memory not from USB.:)

I think I have "misread/misunderstood" your Question:

This is only relevant for USB Loading.Excuse me please,it was my Fault,I was unclear.

Alright, so i suppose that it could work if the wad is installed on my NAND, not on my emuNAND.
I'll try that, just to be sure.

I'll give you an update as soon as i go home :)

Some games don't work very well on emuNAND.
some might work only with specific "IOS base"
some will only work with a japanese NEEK emuNAND.
https://wiki.gbatemp.net/wiki/Wii_cIOS_EmuNAND_Compatibility_List

If it's confirmed that Blazing doesn't work with emuNAND, maybe we can add it to the wiki?
be sure it's working fine on realNAND, then test few cIOS base when launched from emuNAND, and report please :)
Apparently, wiki users started to list even non problematic games, so just report even if it works with all bases you tried.

japanese games are sometime not working on non JPN consoles (japanese language option is not available on non JPN console), so neek is the only solution.
But blazing seems to work fine, as Alexander could launch it. so it's more an emuNAND related issue. or maybe your WAD is bad? be careful when you install it to your NAND, be sure to have priiloader installed in case of banner brick.

I don't remember if channel games are affected by one of the option in the loader. but I do remember that options for channel were not all working correctly in USBGX, Wiiflow had better compatibility (like 4:3/16:9 aspect ratio not working with usbgx).
but some Wii disc Japanese games require an option, I forgot the name. something about "import" or "string"?
I never tried japanese games, so I only vaguely remember that option being available in the individual game option menu.

you say that i need cIOS 250 with base 56, but i have cIOS 249 with base 56 and cIOS 250 with base 57.
Some game need 56, some game need 57.
the slot where you install them is not important, as long as you know which one have which base, so you can "set" the proper slot based on the game needing specific "base".
for example, Guitar hero 5 need base56, you have it on slot249, so you need to set that game to use that slot.
if you set that game to use slot250, it'll be based on IOS57, which won't work.

we tried to compile a list of "required base" for problematic games :
https://wiki.gbatemp.net/wiki/Wii_cIOS_base_Compatibility_List

, that the game doesn't run if the USB drive is on USB port #1. The game shows black screen and then resets to Wii Menu.
Port1 works ONLY with d2x v10 r53.
you have "r53" in slot251 only, but it's base58, while GH5 need base56!
see the problem here?

as a general rule :
NEVER USE FLASHDRIVE
NEVER USE r53
ALWAYS USE port0
then the issue will be easier to fix (just a setting problem or a matter of trying different base only, and not caring about port, or d2x version or hdd compatibility)
removing these 3 possibilities of common issue will help you, otherwise it's too much combination of possible problem.
if you REALLY need r53/port1 support, then it's okay if you know why (for example 3 HDD support on WiiU), but you should first be sure the game works on other port too, or with other config, etc. to rule out any issue you don't think about.

Some HDD are not compatible with r53, so if one of your game really need base58 maybe you could replace your slot251 to r52 base58, unless you really need port1? but then port1 with another base than 58, because base58 is rarely working with games and ends in black screen or freezes while playing.

If you want to learn about IOS base, slots, or IOS in general, I can only invite you to read few guides I've written:
https://gbatemp.net/posts/8968173 (IOS/cIOS/slot choice for your game)
https://gbatemp.net/threads/wii-hacking-explained.501605/ (general wii internal function info)(it's missing pictures, sorry, I didn't reupload them yet)
and the 2 wiki link at the top are also useful to you once you understand the baseIOS requirement.

Thank you very much for the detailed explanation.
However, i have an update!

Blazing Star WORKS.

It works on NAND from Wii Menu AND from USB Loader GX without any option enabled... But, it works ALSO on emuNAND with "Region Code Patch" enabled.
That's the option i enabled the first time, when it started without issues!
I tried several times and it always worked. So i think i'm done here.

I'm going to update my main post so everyone can see how i solved my issues.

So, the solutions are:

1) Guitar Hero 5: put the USB drive on port0, select the cIOS with base 56 (which, in my case, is cIOS 250), which is the only working for it. On port1, as Cyan said, it only works d2x cIOS r53, which is unstable and not compatible with many games.
2) Blazing Star (or i suppose any VC Japanese game): install on NAND or install on emuNAND and enable "Region Code Patch" in game options in USB Loader GX.

Thank you Alexander1970 and Cyan for your very kind help and patience.https://gbatemp.net/members/alexander1970.469483/

Thank you for your report and confirming the "region code patch" works for VC channels too (I always forget that option name). and reporting you have to enable it or it'll not work, unless on NAND.
That's strange it doesn't require that option when on NAND, I thought it would.

edit:
in USBGX, I found "Patch Country Strings" option, not "Region Code Patch"

Oh, thanks for the correction. I am italian, and the correct translation for my option is "Region Code Patch". "Patch Country Strings" means totally a different thing in italian XD
Well, that is the correct option, BTW.

Cyan, is there any way i can contribute to your wiki? I'm trying to run a bunch of different games for VC, WiiWare and Wii on my console. Your cIOS compatibility wiki could be very useful for people like me.. Like us.

For example, Life Force for NES (VC) does not run neither on NAND or emuNAND. I'm gonna try another wad but it could be one of those games which simply don't run... Maybe you have more luck...

edit: the wad works, i tested it on Dolphin, and it runs without issues.

Oh, I see it's a matter of translation, thanks.
the translations are done by end users and they can rename options or menus like they want, mostly when they feel it's better (I do translate some menus differently with the French file too, as lot of menus were named wrong or conflicting because of multiple developers working on the project :P)

If you want a Wiki account, I can create one for you.
do I use your current forum nickname and email?
or just "Vanack" maybe to make it shorter? it's up to you. you'll receive a mail to create your password.

Thank you for wanting to help with the wiki :)
We don't have a lot of active users working on it anymore, it's really appreciated!

The list is maybe not good, because I created it based on d2x version only, now we know compatibility is usually a IOS base issue. so, in the comment be sure to tell which base you tried.
Maybe I should (or you can) add a Neek column? for games like Castlevania, bonzaiBarber, etc. these ones only work with neek.

If you can, try installing common different bases IOS, you should already have 56,57,58, maybe install 53,38 in slot 247/248?
If you can, even different version of the cIOS.
sometime, old cIOS can work, but I don't think a lot of users will bother, they often prefer using neek directly.

for example, "MotoHeroz" works fine with Waninkoko's cIOS rev19 base57, but not with d2x base57.
strange, right?
but it's really a lot of work to do that as it has limitation with old cIOS revision (root of SD, etc.)

For life force (or other game you encounter):
1. just try different bases with life force, using d2x v8/10r52 and common working bases : 56, 57, 38, more rarely 58, 53.
2. even better, you can check the official "requested IOS" in ShowMiiWad, or any other tool displaying that info, and try with that IOS as base.
3. try the game on dolphin, or install on NAND to see if it works. sometime it could require region free, or some special aspect ratio (a wiiware game has that issue) or video mode.
4. try with neek, no need to reinstall, it's just an option in the loader to use either emuNAND full or neek mode. you need to setup neek once, and then they both share the same emuNAND path.

Yes, you can use my forum email. As user, you can choose between "Vanack" and "VanackSabbadium", but i'd prefer the second one!

It's a very nice and the only cIOS compatibility wiki around internet, and i think it could be so much useful for many people who still uses Wii. So i'm glad to do it :)

Alright, i'll try then, but i think that none of the older IOS support external FAT32 usb drives...

1) I tried cIOS 249 (d2x v10r52 base 57), cIOS 250 (d2x v10r52 base 56) and cIOS 251 (d2x v10 r53-beta base 58), but none of them worked. I'll try cIOS 248, which is d2x v8 or v6 if i remember correctly..
2) Seems like it needs IOS53. I'll try it.
3) It works on Dolphin, and i also installed on NAND but it doesn't work either. I'll try to region free it...
4) I'll try it, if it doesn't screw my Wii XD

It's strange that the game doesn't work on real nand either. even when launch from sysmenu and not from usbgx? the game is the same region than your NAND?

neek doesn't screw your Wii, on the contrary.
it's a way to keep the wii untouch, and run everything from SD or USB as if it was your real Wii data/sysmenu/etc.
if you need a guide https://gbatemp.net/posts/6592730 (might not be easy to follow, sorry)
compared to the emuNAND you use currently, it's only a file (/sneek/kernel.bin on SD or usb) and that's all. then in USBGX you can go to game settings, and change the emuNAND mode from Full to Neek.
it'll be a little longer to boot, oh and when you exit the game you are still in neek ! you need to reset/power off the console to exit neek and launch usbgx again. you can install "nk2o" channel on your emuNAND to automatically reset the console on game exit.
