Hi,

I inherited a black Wii some time ago, it came with a 2gb SD card and a WD external hard drive with games on it.

When I first got it (about 2-3 years ago) I don’t think It was working correctly as a result I did a factory reset and completely messed it up as I didn’t know about homebrew setups etc.

Due to COVID – 19 we are all indoors so I thought what a better time to start this project, I have 3 kids who can’t wait to start playing the games as we have never owned a console before.

Anyway, I installed homebrew, d2x-cIOS-Installer 3.1 and USB Loader GX 3.0 r1272

Everything works fine, the games show up and the relevant artwork and theme tunes play, I can also download missing artwork so that shows I have write access to the portable drive through the Wii. However, once I select to play the game, I get a black screen and sometimes it remains in this state and other times to goes back to the screen where I can select d2x-cIOS-Installer or USB Loader GX.

I have tried to use both us ports and both respond the same

Used a different external WD drive in a different caddy

Used a fresh new game (to eliminate the old games that came on the hard drive)

Im not sure if I need to install any other software for this to work

I feel that I am so close (maybe wrong), please make some suggestions to a solution. I am sorry if I have left out some vital information (im new to this all), if I have please ask and I will try and answer the best I can. I appreciate if you can give me some simple instructions as the terminology and process is all new.

thanks

Hi Alexander1970

I think I have understood you correctly, I have therefore

Using CIOS installer reinstalled d2x-v10beta52, IOS 249 [56] rev 65535. I have not changed anything on 250 from what I originally installed.

I am not sure what Trucha Bug NAND Access USB 2.0 means

I can also confirm that

- Loader´s IOS -> is 58

- Game´s IOS -> is 249

- Nand Saves Emulation – is OFF

These are the default settings as I understand it

I also have the WD external hard drive plugged into Port 0

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Other than the mentioned software, do i need anything else for this to work.

for clarify all i have is homebrew, d2x-cIOS-Installer 3.1 and USB Loader GX 3.0 r1272.

After the "Correction" of your Wii´s cIOS Installation and checking the Points (you have it already,ok.:)).
You should be able to run Wii Games. Please try some Games.

Thank you.:)

Hi,

I have tried both hard drives and tested about 10 games, all still keep going to black screen.

The process of installing the apps seems straight forward, I have done a factory reset a few times and the black screen keeps appearing every time I try to load a game.

As the install process seems straight forward im thinking is there likely to be corrupt files within the system somewhere and if so would a factory reset have reset these.

Is there any files I can manually delete or rename to force the regeneration of the file or perhaps downloading a new file to replace the old. Something is certainly holding it unit back from loading games

also forgot to mention that the Wii now keeps hanging and taking longer to move from screen to screen

your Wii Mod seems ok for USB Games Loading except the now corrected Slot 249.
(you have a lot of "unpatched System IOSes" but I do not hink that is really relevant...)

Your HDD is ok ? Is it formatted with FAT32 or NTFS ? Or WBFS ?
Did you transferred the Games/ISO´s with the WiiBackup Manager from your PC to your WD USB HDD ?

Honestly I do not have any Idea what "prevents" your Wii Games from booting or causes the Black Screen.:(
I am very sorry.....

Please correct (you can use the d2x cIOs Installer)
I said few days ago that it's not necessary to force users to re-run the cIOS installer when they already have the correct cIOS to use !
he has d2x r52 base57 in slot250, he can just set his loader to use slot250.

ultimately, having a r52 base56 could be useful, but if it's just to debug and see if the problem is r53 or not, the first thing to try is to "use r52" instead of installing it.
well, that's just my way of viewing how to debug efficiently. first, verify based on what's available, sometime users don't understand how to install a new homebrew to SD, or are not familiar with modifying their system. going to the more simplest step is faster to debug, then once you have the solution you can suggest changes.

Jazz:
There is no need to factory reset. and it doesn't do anything else than deleting savegames and installed channels. which you might not want, because it deletes the Homebrew Channel and you have to reinstall it.
it does NOT change or reset back your console to clean IOS. installed IOS and cIOS, even if bad, are kept on your console on factory reset.
The only thing is does which affects you is generating a new ConsoleID which makes your old (officially) bought channels incompatible, and you can't launch/decrypt any channels installed on the official SD Menu.
the wii is only relying on current installed IOS, if you need to "resoftmod" it, then it's only a case of running cIOS installer again and overwrite slot249, that's all.

Returning to sysmenu or HBC is usually a symptom of "game not found" at game launch.
It can be few things:

1) HDD not found
Other than "wrong USB Port", but you said you tried port 0, so:
it can mean the HDD is initialized in the loader's interface when using IOS58 (loader's IOS) because you see the game list, but not working properly when using IOS249 (game's IOS).

What you should try is set the loader's IOS to 249 (the same as game's IOS) and reboot.
which mean the loader will use the same IOS than the one when you launch the game.
see if the loader can still mount the drive and see game list. if it can't, the drive is not working with cIOS.

maybe the cIOS doesn't init the HDD properly ? (it's often the case when using r53, not r52, which is why Alexander made you reinstall that version instead).
but I doubt that's the case, because if the HDD was bundled with the console, it means it was used by the previous owner and 249 (or 250) should work.

2) file not found:
Maybe the previous owner used a different loader, and that other loader had other filename layout support? USBLoaderGX works with a lot already, except "title.wbfs" (mario.wbfs is not compatible) or wbfs/title/TitleID6. (wbfs/mario/ is not compatible)
If the loader can list them, it means the "folder" of the game is present, but the actual game is missing or not named correctly.
the loader expect this format :
wbfs/Game Title[TitleID6]/TitleID6.wbfs

if you have :
wbfs/mario.wbfs <-- not compatible with USBLoaderGX, but the loader wouldn't even list it.
wbfs/mario/SNMP01.wbfs <-- not compatible with USBloaderGX, but the loader shouldn't even list it.
wbfs/Mario [SNMP01]/ <-- no file in the folder, no game to boot! but the loader would list the game based on the found folder.
wbfs/Mario [SNMP01]/Mario.wbfs <-- wrong, but the loader would list it because the folder exists.
wbfs/Mario [SNMP01]/SNME01.wbfs <-- wrong, file titleID is different than folder's titleID. the loader list but can't run it.
wbfs/Mario [SNMP01]/SNMP01.wbfs <-- good

If you have any "non default" naming convention, I suggest you force a "game renaming" using wii backup Manager.
I'll post a guide if you are on PC (not mac).
edit:
Follow the second section, how to setup the app, then mount your drive in the app. it's done instantly!
https://gbatemp.net/threads/how-to-split-brawl.484822/#post-7592791

that setting enable "auto rename" the file and folders naming convention at partition mount.
when you load the partition, if the program finds games not located or named like it should, then it moves/rename them immediately into the proper "layout".

3) file access protected :
Again, I doubt it's the cause because previous owner probably didn't have issues playing its games.
but, listed here because it's a possible cause for someone else reading this thread with similar black screen at launch issue.

it can be because the game's files are write protected.
I think it affects only FAT32, not NTFS, but you can verify it anyway to be sure.

you said you have write access to the portable drive, guess you meant the SD card?
because HDD don't have write protected mode.
you need to verify the game file (.wbfs) attribute of FAT32 or NTFS are not set to "read only".

while you are doing it, check the SD card have write access too !
not having write access on the SD can cause bugs in the loader, not able to save the loader's settings at game launch, etc..
