Hey everyone. I recently decided to homebrew my Wii and all went well until I tried backing up games from the discs using USB Loader GX.
I first used a copy of Wii Sports Resort and it froze at 20%. I resetted the console and it appeared in my library. Great! I moved on to the next one. But it always happened.

Then, I tried to actually play some of these games. Every single one kicked me back to the Homebrew Channel.

To make sure my backups weren't corrupted, I tested them out in Dolphin and they booted up fine. I can't get them to work because my PC doesn't have Bluetooth but I'll try on a different computer to see if I can actually play the games.

Some more info:
I used the d2x cIOS installer in order to install the custom IOS, and I used the guide provided by wii.guide.
For my backups, I used a 500GB SSD [or SSHD? not sure] made by Seagate.

Apologies if I put this in the wrong category.

Hello.:)

I first used a copy of Wii Sports Resort and it froze at 20%.
On the Install Process or on Game Loading ?

I used the d2x cIOS installer in order to install the custom IOS, and I used the guide provided by wii.guide.

You confirmed, you used the "correct" Guide your,cIOS Setup should look like this:

IOS249[56] (rev 65535, Info: d2x-v10beta52): Trucha Bug, NAND Access, USB 2.0
IOS250[57] (rev 65535, Info: d2x-v10beta52): Trucha Bug, NAND Access, USB 2.0
(If the Bases 56 & 57 are the other Way Around it is also ok.)

For my backups, I used a 500GB SSD [or SSHD? not sure] made by Seagate.

Very good.Has the Enclosure an Power Supply too ?
Is it formatted with FAT32 ?
And is it plugged in the Correct Port 0 please ?

using USB Loader GX.

Which Version of the USBLoader GX did you use please ?
In the Settings please check under "Loader Settings":
Game´s IOS and Loader´s IOS please.

To make sure my backups weren't corrupted

Excellent,that excludes "bad" Games.:)

Please check this Points.
Good Luck
Thank you.:)

on the install process. there's no loading screen while booting up the game.

IOS249[56] (rev 65535, Info: d2x-v10beta52): Trucha Bug, NAND Access, USB 2.0
IOS250[57] (rev 65535, Info: d2x-v10beta52): Trucha Bug, NAND Access, USB 2.0

yep, but just to make sure i'll redo the install with those settings.

it's a laptop hard drive connected through a SATA wire. I believe it uses the power from the Wii.
Last time I checked, I put it into Port 0 but I also had success with Port 1 too.

Which Version of the USBLoader GX did you use please ?
In the Settings please check under "Loader Settings":
Game´s IOS and Loader´s IOS please.

3.0 Rev. 1272
Game IOS: 58
Loader IOS: 249
[I might've switched the values though.]

Can you maybe try an other HDD ?

If you have no other Choices:
Please can you try it with CleanRip to be sure your Drive/HDD is ok.
https://github.com/emukidid/cleanrip/releases

Please choose as Destination "SD CARD". (That from the Wii,please check of enough Space)
It makes (depends on the Gamesize) 2-3 .ISO Parts on the Root of the SD Card.
You can move them to your HDD into "wbfs\[GameID]\" <-- The Game ID should be in the Filname from the created Parts.
Try it with the USBLoader GX please.

If this works please try it again (delete the Game Files first please) and now choose "USB" as Destination please (your HDD should be connected and formatted with FAT32).
And move the Files then also to the Folder "wbfs\[GameID]\"

Good Luck.:)

if you use Port 1, it'll reboot when you launch the game.
be sure to use port 0.

another user reported that freezing while dumping a disc is still doing its dumping job in the background. just wait until the HDD Led stop flashing.
to be sure the dump is good and complete, you can try to verify your game with WiiBackupManager's Sha1 option.

apparently, 1272 has this freeze bug, I don't know why. Old version should work, but I don't know which one introduced the bug. you could try 1271.

UPDATE: my games are working now! It might've been because I put them in the wrong port.

Right now i'm actually experiencing the freeze bug! I'm trying to back up my copy of Sonic and the Secret rings and it froze at 33.99%.

Is the HDD LED the one at the back of the console? If so, there's no light. But the front disc light is still on.

Also, I'm currently on a Mac so WiiBackupManager won't work here.

But thanks guys!

I couldn't get CleanRip to work with my SD Card since it didn't have enough storage so I'll have to try that again with a bigger one. But with the HDD, I get a Mounting Drive Error. Also, my drive is being read as read-only in my Mac.

Thank you.:)

Did you have tried Witgui instead ?

Good Luck.:)

Witgui does work but again, it's not recognizing my drive at all.
Excuse me,I was unclear,my Fault. You can use Witgui instead of the WiiBackupManager.:)

Can you maybe try an SATA HDD instead of the SSD in the External Housing ?
Only to get sure it has nothing to do with the Case/the Controller of it.

Thank you.:)

is your drive hidden with Ustealth?
if it is, that's why it's not recognized.

could you try USBLoaderGX r1271? I don't know since when there is that freeze bug when dumping a disc.
all revisions are on sourceforge or mediafire (link on first post of official usbloader thread)

edit:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/usbloadergx/files/Releases/New revisions (3.0+)/

If you have time (coronavirus confinement ?), and you'll be willing to try different old version to find which one introduced the freeze bug that would be great. thank you.

One thing that just occurred to me.... The sound on the 2600 sucked less back then the harsh sound we hear now is from infinitely better speakers we have now, back when the 2600 was new speakers produced a almost muffled sound, like CRTs made old graphics look slightly better.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I wonder if I could recommend that to some emulation devs that perhaps the sound could use some smoothing out to simulate those old TVs
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think a few of the early systems could benefit from that, at least up to the 8 bit generation, by the 16 bit generation I think TVs had gotten a lot better in almost every way
