2K signs contract to make NFL games again, for the first time in 16 years

16 years have passed since 2K Games last made one of their NFL 2K games, specifically NFL 2K5, but a new partnership might change things up. 2K and the NFL have signed a contact that will allow for a "multi-year" partnership to create new football games. The agreement states that 2K's new games specifically must be non-simulation football games, as to likely not compete with EA Sports' exclusive current production of the Madden NFL series. Whatever games we do end up getting, are currently in early development and haven't been formally announced, though they have confirmed that the first game as a result of this deal will launch in 2021, in the company's 2022 fiscal year.

“The NFL is one of the most successful sports brands in the world, known for creating incredible entertainment for fans,” said David Ismailer, President of 2K. “We’re thrilled to be back in business with the NFL in a partnership that will span multiple video games centered on fun, approachable and social experiences. It’s exciting to bring together 2K’s expertise in creating award-winning sports games with the NFL’s renowned status as a world-class entertainment and sports organization.”

A leading developer and publisher of global interactive entertainment based in Novato, Calif., 2K previously published the popular and critically-acclaimed NFL 2K franchise, which ran from 1999 to 2004, through the Company’s 2K Sports label. Other 2K-published games include the top-selling and top-rated NBA video game simulation series NBA® 2K, as well as WWE® 2K, The Golf Club 2019 Featuring PGA TOUR®, Borderlands™, BioShock®, Mafia®, Sid Meier’s Civilization® and XCOM®.

“Expanding the NFL’s presence in the world of gaming has become a focus for the League as we look to grow the next generation of our fanbase and reviving our partnership with 2K was a natural step in that effort,” said Joe Ruggiero, Senior Vice President of Consumer Products at the NFL. “2K is a worldwide leader in sports video games, with a proven track record of creating best-in-class and award-winning games and we look forward to sharing more about the projects we are working on with them in the future.”

Today’s NFL partnership announcement follows several recent growth updates from the publisher and its development studios.

“It’s an exciting time for 2K and our fans,” said Ismailer. “We’re growing our sports offerings and building on our core games with new IP, as well as continued support of award-winning franchises, all with the goal of giving our fans more amazing games and entertainment for years to come.”

Not that I care about American football, and care about the computer games even less, but more competition is not a bad thing.

Sadly the damaged has already been done. 16 yrs ago, 2K had an awesome chance of de-throwing Madden. It kicked off the game w/ a super low price and garnered rave reviews. Madden came in and bought the license. Now they gotta start from scratch and 2K is all about micro-transaction now.

The only American Football games I've ever played were Madden 97... in 1997...
And Madden 64 alonside FIFA 98... played them way back in 1999...

I hope these new games improves what I've seen so far!

Wonder if this means that other devs can get the NFL license as well as long as the game is different enough. Like, could Tecmo maybe get the license again as well, and start making years Tecmo Super Bowl releases? That is a huge thing only, unofficial yearly builds with the NES Tecmo Super Bowl game. People love that game and has maintained a cult following. Would be great to see Tecmo do it officially, not try and be super modern graphics, keep it faithful to the NES game, but you know, adapt for widescreen, allow plays like the 2 pt conversion which were never in there, and of course update for the latest yearly roster. That could so easily make them money, and they must be aware of it.

Nah...
People want realistic armored men running and bumping. What you suggest would amount to failure.

I assume that's sarcasm, but if not, you should look into the Tecmo Bowl fanbase online, it's large and they're very passionate about the NES Tecmo Super Bowl entry, considered by most as the best entry in the series despite later attempts to make better graphics for later systems.

I am not. Despite what you think, little to no money would be made. But it would be awesome, I agree.
The license alone must be ravenous, disallowing such "adventure".

I wish NFL blitz games were still made. They were great!

Well EA bought up that series awhile ago too. They couldn't release a good Blitz game on their own, gave up and focused only on Madden. Sucks, I'd love a good Blitz game too.

Nah, if they were to release it as a digital game at a lower price, and it'd sell really well. It'd be one of those inideish games that sells well based on reputation and buzz like Sonic Mania or even Shovel Knight.

Only if they pulled an International Super Star Soccer, and made a creative wordplay.

Nah, you definitely are not fully aware of the fanbase it already has then. Beyond that , aside from getting the license itself, it'd be a very cheap game to make. It'd definitely be worth paying for that license, there's no way it wouldn't make its money back and then some.

The sad thing is, we're up to 2020, and Madden still hasn't matched the presentation quality of NFL 2k5 for a game. It's insulting that it's gone this long. Problem is, now, EA and 2K are both all about micro-transactions, loot-boxes and literal gambling in their sports games. And safe to say, anyone that was involved with 2k5 being as good, is long gone (hopefully to a better environment).

At this point, it'd take at least another competitor to really bring some deep reaching changes to making these games actually playable again, if not also affordable.

Thats ok , Americans think soccer is as exciting as golf so nobody cares about that.
BUT you should actually read the article and you will find out it is NOT competition at
all! 2k can do a football game, but it has to be a NON-simulation game. And it literally
says "so that it DOESN'T compete with EA's Madden series"

This is what happens when you judge a book by its cover people, stop being lazy and READ.
