this is very cool, I have a US console and can't get it to work even though i toggle it on and apply patches through wups. Has anyone had any luck getting this to work on boot through CBHC?

I don't think that's possible (the op mentions that it doesn't work on boot up). it might be dangerous to do that anyway, so I wouldn't attempt it.

Short answer: You can't. It may or may not brick your system but no one is going to want to be the guinea pig to find out. And obviously if you ever removed CBHC without removing the mod, that would be a guaranteed brick as it would fail to load the Wii U menu.
Long answer: CBHC or another CFW like Mocha could patch this all on the fly (it may be easier to do with Mocha as that does more on the fly patching than Haxchi CFW does, so the framework for patching files in titles on the fly might already be there) so it wouldn't require actually modifying the NAND. But seeing as the Wii U is dead and all the homebrew devs have long since moved on there is not much chance of that happening.

Fair enough. Possibly someone with a hardmod could experiment with this so that there’s no brick, but with the community not as active anymore I doubt that will happen. I have pretty much everything needed for patching including CBHC, Mocha, FShax, and rednand. Unfortunately as you’ve said there’s not much I can do because it’ll most likely brick, or not work. I have permanent modded titles on here and messed with vWii system menu, but oh well. Hopefully someone one day will get motivated to work on this a little more so we can finally have themes. Great work regardless though.

themes is one thing that nintendo has failed at. I can't believe that the switch still hasn't gotten support for that.

To be fair, it was like 3 years into the 3DS' life before it received themes. I think had the Wii U been a bigger success, it too would have eventually received themes. And the Switch may well soon too, but just as the 3DS, they're taking their damn time before they start adding theme options.

Is it normal that the plugin loader doesn't start?
No. Reboot and try again.
Any progress
I had a talk with the devs of the Wii U Plugin System some time ago. They told me the Dark Mode Plugin is broken on newer Plugin System releases. So if you want it right now downgrade the Wii U Plugin System.
For more infos ask on their Discord, a link is on GitHub (which itself is linked on the reddit post).

A permanent mod would be needed to be integrated into CBHC or similar custom firmware. That would probably be easy to do, as the code is already there, but most of us do not have any programing skills. :|

but it is only useful if we can have that in cbhc.
We don't need a new version of cbhc. Rename the wiiupluginloader.elf to homebrew_launcher.elf and place it in a folder named homebrew_launcher. And the path is the following: sd:/wiiu/apps/homebrew_launcher/homebrew_launcher.elf. And then you set it so that cbhc automatically boots into the "homebrew launcher" (which can also be set with cbhc). Tadah. Dark Mode at boot.

Pretty good idea. But does this method also load all CFW patches then?
