GOG updates its refund policy with full refund up to 30 days after a purchase

GOG, the digital video games store from CD Projekt RED, announced a new update to its refund policy with a 'gamers-first’ approach via a blog post: starting now, you can get a full refund up to 30 days after purchasing a product, even if you downloaded, launched, and played it. Yup, you read that right! It's quite the generous offer and likely a move to attract more customers to its platform while combatting piracy. However, the company notes that it reserves the right to refuse refunds in individual cases.

“We’re monitoring the effects of the current update to make sure no one is using this policy to hurt the developers that put their time and heart into making great games,” reads an FAQ on the new refund policy.

GOG also encourages gamers to consider sharing their opinions if they've played and finished a game and didn't like it, rather than take advantage of the refund policy. There are also other technicalities regarding specific cases like pre-orders and gifts. For the former, they can be refunded during the pre-order period and for 30 days after their release date. Gifts can be refunded as a cash or GOG Wallet refund. I would encourage you to read the FAQ linked below for more details.

Lastly, as the FAQ notes: “Please don’t take advantage of our trust by asking for an unreasonable amount of games to be refunded. Don't be that person. No one likes that person.”

Time to install a game, make a copy, refund it, and play that copy because GOG is DRM free :tpi:

I mean, if someone is willing to go through the process of buying the game and then refunding it just to play it for free they may as well pirate it directly, would be easier than going through all that hassle

Buy, finish and return. Why buy ?
  • because generous customer-facing policies are the moral thing to do
  • because GoG/CDPR realize that building goodwill with gamers is more likely to convert or partially convert pirates than not.
  • bad return policies have never been a proven deterrent to piracy
  • realistically if you didnt want to pay for it, its less work to pirate it than "buy, finish and return."
i could go on but you get it.
so really there is no downside to them only potential upside/goodwill with the community.

I would only ever purchase a physical release, and no I wouldn't try to exchange it unless it was actually defective. I rely on my FitGirl-friend for everything digital.

not everyone loves them and sometimes its a on again off again relationship.
people have ruthlessly pirated from Nintendo going as far as to use Nintendo servers to download the games they pirate with utilities (less so with revokes and the wide availability elsewhere)

the point im getting at is not that a company with draconian views on digital rights can't be successful, but more that they can be successful despite those gross viewpoints.

i know personally i lose no sleep pirating from Nintendo when i believe they deserve it rather than buying because i believe in encouraging good behavior and discouraging bad.
whereas CDPR has built up too much goodwill they would need to do some big blunders to get me to pirate from them out of spite.

yes i realize not everyone has a moral code to their piracy but the people that don't typically were not customers in the 1st place because they will pirate regardless of what companies do.

they are kinda going to shoot themselves in the foot many people will buy a game, finish it within 30 days than get the full refund. it says they won't allow people to do that but how exactly would they stop them? full refund means Full refund! I can see them dropping this to like a day soon in the future 30 days won't last. doesn't apply to me though i just pirate the shit out of everything :P

One thing that just occurred to me.... The sound on the 2600 sucked less back then the harsh sound we hear now is from infinitely better speakers we have now, back when the 2600 was new speakers produced a almost muffled sound, like CRTs made old graphics look slightly better.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I wonder if I could recommend that to some emulation devs that perhaps the sound could use some smoothing out to simulate those old TVs
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think a few of the early systems could benefit from that, at least up to the 8 bit generation, by the 16 bit generation I think TVs had gotten a lot better in almost every way
