What is the best and most trustworty place to buy a used or renewed PS3 that can officially run PS2 games?
As well as having your firmware low enough to mod it, preferably.

Amazon for consistency honestly, if you get the 60gb model and upgrade the hdd you can spend about $60 for the console and however much on the drive you want.
You could probably find it cheaper at a local games store, but that can be hit or miss
as far as I know you can cfw any fat ps3 still

Better yet, get a slim one that can install cfw and mod it. After that, use webman to run your backups, better compatibility. The other best option is a slim or super slim that can't run cfw, but they can do HEN, which these days is almost the same.

Firmware is a non-issue. Safest way to get a back-compat PS3 would be ebay. If you buy it with paypal you get a 6 month warranty which if you were sold a faulty one it would break down by then.

I myself was lucky that there is a local game store near me that works on old console and sold me a refurbished back compatible PS3 for a good price considering anywhere you buy online shipping is going be a lot for one of these fat boys.

If you’re looking for a CECHA01 or CECHB01 model, eBay is good, but they’re not cheap. You can also try pawnshops. I’ve found they’re great since they don’t know what they have, or care. To them an A is the same as every other fat model. The ones around here will ask $75 and include games, but it’s easy to talk them down to $60. If you’re buying, modding, and reselling like myself, you can ask for a bulk purchase discount and get them for $50 each but you gotta buy 10, and they won’t all be fats.

There’s other options but I can’t divulge all my secrets ;-)

Local online classifieds... not sure what's popular in your area, but Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace type places would be my first go-to. The latest OFW can be hacked without special hardware so don't worry about that.

I wouldn''t chance it on one of those old PS3s. The best ones for backwards compatibility were also very prone to the YLOD.

I ended up with one off of eBay. "Refurbished" piece of junk, the seller had installed a fan mod that basically forced the fans to run at 100% all the time. The noise was so loud it was pretty much unplayable, and it still ended up throwing a YLOD again anyway.

You can turn the fan mod down. If it YLOD it probably wasn’t a cooling mod and needed to be cleaned & thermal paste replaced.

Oh I'm sure it needs a complete reball. After it threw the YLOD I opened the console and sure enough there was a potentiometer for controlling the fan. eBay post said it was refurbished, had a 30 day return policy but they were strict that they wouldn't take it back if the case had been opened. It barely lasted over that return policy.

It sounds like someone did the "oven trick." They knew it's days were numbered and wanted to make a quick buck off it before it died.

dude just get a slim 2 or 21 if you want full cfw i picked mine up for $100 easy though i'd do two things 1) put new thermal paste on the cpu/gpu (99% chance unless already done it's dried up and will overheat quickly) and 2 install webman and turn on dynamic fan control keep the settings on default for temp ranges

You can get them for $50 if you stick to your price on Facebook. Pawnshops sell them for $75. Webman is okay but gets buggy with Ferrox, control fan utility is better imo.

If you live in one of these
  • United Kingdom
  • Ireland
  • Spain (mainland)
  • Australia
  • Netherlands
  • India
  • Mexico
  • Poland
  • Portugal
  • Italy
  • Canary Islands
then you can check out the CeX / webuy website. They sell functioning pre-owned consoles and games, I've bought many consoles and games on their website, and I would 100% buy again.

Don<t waste too much money on this. Get a PS4 if you don't have one now is the time soon but theres so many good free games right now...

PS2 emulation on PC is at another level now if you can play your games this way is the best graphics.

If you you get a ps3 50$ max from anywhere as long as it works . You will probably want to change HDD too as they are practically free you can salvage them from old laptops.

Look around and ask people on facebook they will probably give it to you... who wants a ps3 in 2020?

And buy a 10$ 3rd party controller from china. Use a ps4 controller for actual play. If you can get a official remote.then you are lucky but you can live without it.
