The Pokemon Global Link service will be ending in February 2020

For over nine years, Pokemon players have been able to use the Pokemon Global Link online feature throughout multiple generations of Pokemon games, beginning with Pokemon Black and White, and being used most recently in Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. Introduced in 2010, the Global Link was used as a way for players to catch unique Pokemon in the Dream World browser game, which would have unique Dream Abilities that were not obtainable otherwise. Afterwards, it was used to help facilitate online connections in the 3DS generations of Pokemon titles, for functions such as Rating Battles, Global Missions, and Live Competitions. As Pokemon Sword and Shield use a different way of connecting online players together, the Global Link service will be shut down on February 24, 2020. Once the service shuts down, those aforementioned features will no longer be usable in Pokemon Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, or Ultra Moon.

As a farewell present to the Global Link, players will be able to claim a special Munna belonging to Fennel, the character who used to be the tutorial guide for the Dream World and original implementation of the Global Link. The Pokemon comes in a special Dream Ball, and has its hidden ability. You'll be able to receive the Pokemon from now until the Global Link closure, in Pokemon Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon.

I wouldn't mind if what was replacing it was at least as functional. I'm getting annoyed at the trend of downgrades we now have to pay, or pay more, for.

This is sadly how things will be from now on, from a business point of view this is way too profitable for them not to do it like that

For me, Global Link was all but killed off in 2013 when the Dream World was taken offline; that's the most fun I've ever gotten out of Global Link, since I'm not a multiplayer guy.

So I'm not particularly sad about this; I mourned it seven years ago.

it only took 2 years for it to hit the chopping block when it came to the dream world, which arguably took an even bigger part of black and white since there was an entire massive area in the game restricted to global link connectivity

Black And White 2 was even worse since those two had even more online content.

Anyway, I am willing to trade Pokemon using savestates or whatever Pokemon save editing tool exists for Sun and Moon.

Actually, thinking about this a little more, this is a pretty easy way of forcing Pokemon players into paying for a Nintendo Online subscription if they still want to play Pokemon online.

Also, I'm sure that with Sword & Shield they'll have implemented better ways of checking against pokemon that have been generated or imported in by programs like PKHeX. Disabling online for the older games could be one step towards effectively eliminating hacked pokemon from online play.

I moved over pokemon from pokehex just fine. Also they are pushing their pokehome premium I'm just waiting for the update.

Honestly with Sword and Shield this was the first nerfed pokemon game I played due to a lot of limitations and microtransactions. I believe they are in the right direction for the pokemon league but other than that the rest was rushed and lackluster. I kinda feel bad for paying for the DLC and pokehome premium I hope they make a better game next year. I find Pokemon Let's go Evvee for more enjoyable than sword

Mine mindset with the game, pretty much - I had my fun with the game and will probably purchase DLC (already got a Premium subscription for a while just to see what it's all about), but if they're going to rush the next game just as badly, then I'll probably move on from the series entirely. Time will tell how temporary this blunder is.
