Hi guys,

I am from Europe: at that times I use to play PAL region games on the PS2. Pal region games was having a worst looking and a lower framerate compared to the NTSC ones. Also PAL games was compressed on the top and the bottom of the video, I never understand why.

So I am wondering to know how pal ps2 games looks on a cfw ps3. Is like the ps3 system convert the video making the games looking like an NTSC region? Or it just keep the bad PAL quality?

What do you mean by compressed?

I mean the video was mashed on the video with a black band on the apper side of the tv and another one on the lower side
Sounds like they did not bother to properly optimize for PAL. PAL format has more lines (higher vertical resolution) than NTSC, with PAL having 576 visible lines and NTSC 480. To have games display properly in PAL you would have to either resize the viewport for 2D games, or render at a higher resolution for 3D games, but in the past devs were traditionally lazy when it came to PAL releases and often didn't even bother to fix the game speed for PAL 50hz, leading to games running slower on PAL consoles.

So, to play PAL or NTSC is the same on PS3? Or is better to play NTSC?

thing is back on ps1 and ps2 days they used to encode the videos etc into the ntsc format (480i) and then not touch the videos when they released them in the PAL regions (576i). So they had horrendous black bars top and bottom, and horrible framerates because they were original encoded for 30fps, but then no re-encoded for 25fps. So all PAL videos on games looked a stuttering mess. We had it so bad in them days.

So, its ALWAYS better to play older games in NTSC if you can, always.
