As a circlejerking thinkpad fan myself, I'd say for programming just pick up a used thinkpad. Older models are super cheap on eBay and are hard as a brick, but are heavy and have pretty awful battery life. Even my T500, a laptop made in 2009, Is powerful enough to run Dolphin at full speed, which most cheap laptops aren't capable of due to their thin designs that are so prone to thermal throttling.

Yeah it seems okay but I would probably also recommend just getting some old used/refurbished thinkpad, I'm planning to get one (an x220) when I have enough money

Whatever you do, make sure it is a core2duo or later processor, an i3 or later would be prefered, as these improved the shitty GPU a Dual Core Pentium has.

That way you can run virtual machines using processor register "extensions". (ie, hardware, which consumes less battery). So you can have both a virtual machine and a host machine. +1 For thinkpads I have a T450 and it's gorgeous. I have 8h+ battery life due to dual battery. Even when using VS2019 or very heavy Java IDEs

Don't get Dual Core pentium (a 10 year or earlier) laptop, trust me.

I'm confused about what you intend to game on such weak pc? The video card in your 2nd link is about 11 years old and was a low budget graphic device even back then. You seem tight on money with the links you provided. I'm not sure how in a rush you are , but I would keep looking for a better deal somewhere else.. Be it craigslist, facebook marketplace, pawn shops , ebay, anywhere.. To program, you can do that on any machine that you can type so that's never really a worry. Unless you need a lot of power for what you intend to program and expect to run that software all the time or your IDE is too intensive most processors will be fine.

I guess we need to know what games you are trying to play. None of these laptops are going to play any newer games unless they are super simple 2D games. I'm sorry to burst your bubble, but I would hate for you to spend the money and not being able to do what you want with it. If you want to play old games from like 2005ish on low settings then these laptops might work. The main problem is the graphics cards. They are graphics cards for basic usage, not for gaming, and on top of that, they are really old. (Probably like 10 years old). Also, the processors are old as well, and also very basic bottom of the barrel. Laptop parts such as graphics cards and processors are not replaceable in 99% of laptops. If you want to game on PC and play the latest games on low or medium settings, your best bet is to get an older desktop workstation and buy an Nvidia graphics card to put inside it, but even that is going to cost a lot more than the laptops you have been looking at.

Here is a combination I think you would be happy with, should play all latest games on Medium settings.

Computer ($105): https://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-Optip...sh=item2627f5f9f8:g:TZIAAOSwyulb2k-l&LH_BIN=1

Graphics Card($103.99): https://www.ebay.com/itm/ZOTAC-GeFo...sh=item594611fffb:g:DqgAAOSwt6heTIr1&LH_BIN=1

For $208.99 you cant beat that

Yeah that also seems just fine

To be totally honest with you. You can probably pick up a better laptop cheaper on lets say Ebay or Craigslist.

As a crazy and probably not very recommendable option (especially if you can't risk wasting money) I've seen that you can get a lot of cheap laptop motherboard on ebay or even aliexpress. This however requires that you buy all the other stuff separately, which are:
  • Charger
  • LCD
  • Base housing
  • LCD Housing
  • Keyboard
  • Fan and heatsink
  • HDD
  • RAM
  • Antennas and wifi adapter
  • Bluetooth adapter and antennas (?)
  • ++
This will make it hard to stay within the 100$ budget, but I thought I'd share this idea nevertheless. Also when looking at the motherboards do check that the pictures have the cpu on the motherboard as these are very often removed and sold separately.

A quick search on ebay for "Laptop motherboard nvidia" gave me this Dell XPS L412z with i5 2450M 2,4ghz with an Nvidia gt 520m (I believe that's the gpu from looking up the model) for 19,27$.

The site notebookcheck.net is great for finding out what you can expect from your graphics card in terms of fps in games (scroll down to the bottom of the site. This is for the above mentioned gt520m. Still, note that few reported benchmarks for a game means that you can't necessarily trust the result 100% to be representable for the gpu (look at the cpu as well). However, I would think that people who go through the lengths of publishing their results are also people who maintain their laptops/pcs better than your average consumer.

A tip would be to check dissassembly videos online (:youtube) to see if there are extra circuit boards that come with the motherboard (of course you can drop buying any dvd-roms or other optional stuff laptops tend to come with.)

Again, I would not really recommend this for you in your case especially since there are so many pitfalls (like laptops needing speical types of hdd connections, extra cables for power supply etc.). This is more something I would do as a fun experiment, but it would be interesting to hear what others in this thread might say. Maybe you know someone who has a "broken" laptop that just needs a new housing (which can often costs around 50$).

I currently have a Lenovo t410 and the built in Keyboard does not function properly so I was hoping to get one with a working keyboard and good OpenGL support

For programming, I think it would be fine. In terms of gaming, I don't think it would have very much power. Are you going to be traveling with it? If not, you should get a desktop instead. Desktop components are more powerful than their laptop counterparts.

I do not expect to do AAA gaming just Minecraft I thought about getting a desktop but I would like some portability

Well then it would be perfect. Just don't try to have your settings too high. I use a Nvidia Geforce 210, which lets me do 30-60 FPS (mainly around 30) with an 8 chuck render distance, maximum lighting, and all particles.

Wow 30RFPS and a 8 chunk render distance If I could acheive that that would be great what settings I currently use is 15 - 20FPS with a 4 chunk render distance
