Sakurai says work on Smash Ultimate will be finished after latest DLC, no future Smash games planned

Masahiro Sakurai might be able to finally take a break, as revealed by a new Famitsu interview. According to a translation via Gematsu, Sakurai stated that once the six characters from the second Fighters Pass are released, development work on Super Smash Bros. Ultimate "will finally come to an end". And that at this time, there are no plans for an upcoming Smash game in the future, as "both myself and those at Nintendo haven't thought about the future [of the series] at all". As far as the Fighters Pass 2 lineup goes, the characters have already been confirmed, and are set in stone. Sakurai also mentioned that he's not the one making the roster choices, and that he just goes off suggestions from Nintendo themselves, but he still develops the game not for himself, but "to make other people happy".

Development for Ultimate began as early as 2015, after the DLC was completed for Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U was completed. The game itself was announced in 2018, and released later that same year.

Good now quit waisting time on this shit and get to porting the next piece of shit...or even better how about actually making a "from scratch" game made for the nintendo switch. Where is the good first party support.

Did you know that Brawl was built with assets from Melee, Smash Wii U built with assets from Brawl, and then Ultimate with assets from Smash Wii U? The only confirmed game in the series to be truly be built from scratch is the original, though I suspect Melee was as well. All other entries in the franchise have been working and building off the title from before it with a string of work connecting all titles in the series except possibly from the original to Melee. Its so funny how some people actually were upset that Ultimate was built off of Smash Wii U, yet no one noticed or cared that Wii U did the same thing by building off of Brawl. I never personally got the big deal, as clearly starting with a previous title as a base doesn't mean the next title will be just like the one before it.

I think 3D elements wouldn´t work. Power Stone isn´t Smash Bros. It could be a spin-off but not a successor.

This ship has sailed but Turtles Smash Up for Wii actually had an interesting feature: Manipulating stages (and items) with the pointer. Works best with Wiimote+Nunchuk.
I could also imagine a "Girlfriend VS mode", i.e. the 2nd player takes control of stage hazards and fights against other couples (in case you are not aware: "Girlfriend mode" has become very common since Wii, e.g. all Nintendo Land singleplayer games feature it).

Or if they did choose to make another Smash game in another 5 years or so, maybe they'd make it a spinoff title, like I could see a full 3D take on Smash bros where you aren't just fighting with length and height but with depth as well. Such a drastically different take for the game would be a reasonable excuse to not have nearly as large of a roster as well given how different the game would play even though the end goal of launching your opponents off stage wouldn't change.

Wasn't trying to present the idea as anything other than that.

Next Nintendo console: SSBU port.
Next next nintendo console: SSBM remake.

Actually you don´t need to dedicate all whole game to a Melee remake. You could just change certain parameters to "melee-fy" a current one. Ultimate could theoretically introduce a 64, Melee, Brawl and 4 mode.

Ironically, I could see Falcon working fine in Smash...but my inner lawyer says .

How many times has this been said before during previous smash games? These words are almost meaningless. Besides, there still working on the dlc and the next system is a while away so of course they aren't making plans yet. Besides, with how big this game is there is a good chance it just gets a direct port to the next system anyway.

Well atleast we can still hope our favorite character is chosen. Disney already denied them of Sora so hes off the list for sure.

Depending on how the next system works, it might not even need a port at that, it could just function like a PS4 game on a PS4 Pro, or an Xbone game on an Xbone X. Meaning that the presumed Switch 2 may be capable of playing any Switch 1 game, and if the game recognizes it is on the better hardware, it can then output in better framerate and/or resolution. And at that point, maybe they'd decide to just pick up where they had last left off with Ultimate, continuing to add content to it, but the new content only being accessible on the new hardware if it starts to become too taxing or they want to help push sales of the new hardware. Seems like the logical direction to go with Smash honestly if they're going to just continue with the series in this same direction without any radical new changes.

Project M is really good

I don't know if Nintendo will ever produce a truly great successor - but that doesn't mean it's impossible

Afterall Ninty did manage to create Melee in the first place :P a successor to the original
I personally loved the Subspace Emissary; Brawl might just be my most-played SSB game because of it. Too bad it never came back...

They could also bring back dropped stages and modes; I, for one, mourn Poke Floats, Pyrosphere, Woolly World, and the traditional Classic Mode and All-Star Mode.

I utterly despise the abominations Ultimate replaced Classic and All-Star with; the new Classic Mode's just nowhere near as fun as the original, and All-Star Smash is incredibly lame - I want to fight the cast in order, not scrambled up and all at once.

We already got our main 3D Mario game, we might see another one, Luigi's Mansion 3, BOTW and the sequel in development, and we have Kirby Star Allies, though we might get another main Kirby game or two, and whatever Pokémon games come out.

That's really all that I expect from Nintendo at this point. A couple main games and a bunch of spinoffs.

If this is Sakurai's last Smash, it's probably going to hold its value more than the next one if it's developed by someone else.

i never understood the hype for smash to begin with, it's just a fighting game
Same reason people are hyped for Marvel CU movies or Super Robot Wars - the crossover appeal. Just a fighting game? Eh, that's fine. A fighting game where Mario dukes it out with Megaman, Sonic, Solid Snake and Simon Belmont? Hell yeah, sign me in <3

Jump Force wants to chat with you. ^_^

What I mean is this: Hype can only last if the product has some kind of quality.

That's true! But still, while people stay with Smash for good and polished gameplay, rarely anyone gets into it for any other reason than "my favorite characters are here". Same for hype waves around the game - it's always about new characters and cameos, rather than new mechanics.
