The Sonic movie surpasses Detective Pikachu for most successful video game movie box office opening

snick.jpg

Surpassing expectations in almost every way was the Sonic the Hedgehog movie, which earned a massive $57 million dollars in its opening weekend in North America. That put it just ahead of last year's other critically successful video game-based movie, Detective Pikachu, which opened at a slightly smaller figure of $54.3 million. It looks like the decision to take Sonic's design back to the drawing board definitely benefited the film in the end, as it's currently predicted to amass over $100 million dollars worldwide. And perhaps, with all this success, we might see a sequel to the Sonic movie in the future.

Okay, first I didn't care about that movie, but now that's undeserved.

Especially since in Germany they used a cheap trick called "letting some pseudo-celebrity (in this case some Youtuber) voice the main character instead of an actual professional."

Though, that doesn't really affect NA box-office results. Just wanted to mention it.

It's obvious that they were trying to set up a sequel, with the post credits scenes and all, and I'm glad that the box office success will allow for that. I personally think the movie's shortcomings could be rectified in a sequel, and enough effort and a high enough budget could elevate this potential sequel into something truly amazing. I hope, that is. Also consider that this is Jeff Fowler's first time in the directorial chair, and he's probably just finding his way.

Lol they did the same thing with the spanish dub. the voice for sonic is a youtuber with no previous voice acting roles

Is that two successful video game movies in a row? Has the video game movie curse been broken?

i see no difference between how a comic book or a video game could be turned to a Movie. same concept imo.

gaming companies now understand to make money its need to be good and not a cash grab like before, with a movie could fail in a hour of its release with social media around.

Jim Carrey definitely helped a lot. Had it not been him as Dr. Eggm-- Robotnik, the comedy would have been drastically different and it matters because this is a kids/comedy film.

Christ, it's embarrassing that France and Germany don't take voice acting seriously. If they're going to hire a nobody, then give that chance to someone who's starting his/her career than a wannabe celebrity.

I think Paramount Pictures truly deserve a lot of credit, because it's not every day that you see a movie studio actually listening to the audience's feedback, and turning the tables for the greater outcome.
I haven't watched the movie yet(it's scheduled to air here starting this thursday), but if i'll end up enjoying it more than I think, it would mean a lot to me.
With the exception of Sonic Forces and the fanbase's continuous spread of toxicity, I've been enjoying too many Sonic related things in the last 3 years, from
sharing ideas and beta testing sonic mania twice to playing Team Sonic Racing and reading monthly IDW Sonic comics.

I might not return to the sonic community(it's a long story), but i can finally feel proud of being a sonic fan again :)

I liked the movie a good bit, it was a fun time.
Now we just need a Sonic game good enough to break 16 million or whatever SW/SH is up to now.
I'd say Sonic Mania was better than SW/SH. I think it sold about 1 million copies?
But taking a series long past its prime, perhaps known for its middling games and flawed fanbase, and comparing it to quite literally the highest-grossing media franchise in the world, whose games practically sell by virtue of having the Pokémon name on them alone? I don't think it's the best comparison.

So why the hell are the movies on par then.

I mean it doesn't need to get anywhere near pokemon but there has to be some untapped potential the games are missing here.

If I had to guess? Probably because Sonic the movie is so separated from Sega, in the sense of creative control. Seems like they can't get their grubby hands on it and mess it up all that much.
That, and they chose a weird spinoff title for Pokemon's movie. Maybe if it was more of a "main" Pokemon, it'd do better?

I dunno how much untapped potential there is for Sonic. I think Mania may well be the best the series gets in a while, and I don't see Sonic getting close to Pokemon levels in the video game world.
