So I'm testing the GxGeo version with my Wii U pro controller and it works fantastically. However, when I first boot into the emulator, I am unable to use the Wii U pro controller to set the load device (SD or USB), none of the buttons work, so I have to desync the Pro controller, and then connect a Wiimote so it takes the 1st player slot and hit 1 in order to select SD card. Then I desyn the Wiimote, and am able to reconnect my Pro controller to player 1. This is needlessly tedious. @Wiimpathy Is there a way this can be fixed so that hitting A on the player 1 Wii U pro controller can tell GxGeo to load the roms from the SD card at boot? This would really be all I need to make this the ideal way to load Neo Geo roms for me.

Wow, you're actually the first to ask about Gxgeo. The retroarch core has much more options(too much?) and improvements.
I haven't the Wii U controller and no experience with this. No promise, I'll look what I can do if I have time and motivation.

I appreciate it, there are various reasons that i don't use retroarch when at all possible (though I will indeed use retroarch when no other emulators are available or some key features I need aren't available on alternative emulators), chief among them being that it takes longer to load up and each game takes longer to boot. GxGeo may not look flashy in its UI, but its just a quicker experience to load games all around and I don't notice any performance issues. It would really make my day if you could fix that one thing about it. Thanks for at least looking into it.

Yeah, I get it about retroarch's GUI etc. Regarding loading times it's not true for all games though.
And I said in the 1st post, it's buggy and some games might not work.

Anyway, if you really prefer this stuff, a boot.dol is attached in this post. It's only recompiled with R29-1 and WPAD_CLASSIC_BUTTON_A added in main.c.
If it's working that's great, if not too bad but I won't do more for this obsolete homebrew, hope you understand.

Aw snap, that did it!

Perhaps you're right that some games don't load quicker or have errors in GxGeo, but the games I'm interested don't seem to. So this really is perfect, I'm very grateful you took the time to look into this, even if you believe it to be obsolete. You are the man!

Will you make that source available too, @Wiimpathy? I think it's pretty cool we get a last update for that old school no-nonsense load-and-play Neo Geo emulator! B-)

Thanks as always. :yaywii:

It's a long shot and yes I know this only relates to the Wii and you don't want to touch these obsolete homebrew, how hard would it be to add GamePad support to GxGeo using the following info from FIX94's GamePad patch HERE?

I know there is a few out there who are using GxGeo vWii forwarder on the WiiU who would love to have GamePad support for this obsolete homebrew emulator. Just eliminates the need for a Wii Remote for WiiU owners who wish to play NeoGeo games on the GamePad.

Worth a shot :)

Hey @Wiimpathy I'm very late to your party but I'd just like to say thank you very much for the large Neo game support. Last night when everyone went to bed I sat down and followed your instructions, made a few mistakes, brushed up on my rereading skills and soon after was playing Metal Slug X on 240P on my CRT. Thanks man

Can play up to Metal Slug 5, KOF 2003, SNK vs CAPCOM PLUS (if you want to use Martian or Zero) and Samurai Shodown 5 Special.

Hello teachers!!
Someone who can help me please, I am very confused

I try to run the cps3 core using wiiflow lite 5.4 but do not read the retroarch.cfg file from my usb, just create your folders and your configuration file on the sd card.

My question is if by chance will there be an alternative for this core to read only the files that I have configured in the usb? since I do not want to create conflicts when detecting the cache folder when I run a game

P.D with the other cores I have not had any problems, they run very well with this version of wiiflow..

There is a download link for the CPS3 Street Fighter games on Youtube.
You only have to unzip and copy the files to your sd card!

Is the Neo Geo core updated?
I'm still using the very first version of the Neo Geo core that was released, and it's quite old. It works amazingly but old nontheless.

For instance, the Neo Geo core that I use (again, the old one) can't support overlays, or button remaps.

And upgrading to the new core that's on the first post made by OP messes around all my configurations and won't load NAND. This makes it impossible to load anything NEOGEO
Apparently, it looks for the cache folder on
  • sd:/apps->retroarch->system->cache
instead of
  • sd:/retroarch->system->cache

So... is it just me with this problem?

inb4: Even when I set the directories to load the cache inside Retroarch, it will bring me a DSI Error. This is with the updated core, not with the old one. But I want to use a newer core in order to use overlays and buton mappings.

Overlays are working for a long time. Minus a few NeoGeo games due to lack of RAM.
And yes, you have to set the overlay's path in the menu first. Then load your overlay : Settings => Onscreen Overlay => Overlay Preset
Same for the cache files if using USB drives.

Newer is not always better. The versions in this thread while not perfect are tested and working. No guarantee with the new ones.

It's been said a million times too but don't mix versions, you'll have problems. One trick to avoid that without recompiling is having a custom config per core : https://gbatemp.net/threads/retroarch-one-configuration-file-per-emulator.545488/

No idea about input remapping. It should work like other fba cores. Zero change has been made for that. Have you tried like this : https://gbatemp.net/threads/large-neogeo-games-support-and-cps3-tests.493767/page-8#post-8540064

The promised 1 line edit GxGeo source is attached to this post.

So I've tested 640x224 without bilinear filtering and I agree it's sharp on most games I've tried.
608x224 without bilinear filtering is also fine.

Between these 2 resolutions, 608 looks more accurate on vertical lines thickness consistency when displaying the grid in the NeoGeo hardware test options.

With bilinear filtering enabled, 608x224, 640x224 & 384x224 look all the same but slightly blurry.

Anyone knows if it's possible to save a resolution per game i.e. 608x224 for Shock Troopers and 640x224 for Blazing Star?

So for anyone testing out resolutions and you get to one your monitor or tv cant show and you get a no signal issue, you can edit the /retroarch/retroarch.cfg file on a pc and under "current_resolution_id=xx" put the number 30 in for 640x448 then save it, pop the sd card back in your wii and youre good to keep messing around with resolutions without worrying about being locked out. Or you can delete the config file all together but that with remove all your other settings.

Im not sure if this will help anyone else out either but I couldnt find how to get into the uni-bios region menu, dip switch menu, and found a memory card option menu also.

Buttons B, C, and D together at uni-bios splash screen through retroarch on wii will bring up dip menu

Buttons A, B, and C together at uni-bios splash screen through retroarch on wii will bring up region menu

Buttons A, B, C, and D together at uni-bios splash screen through retroarch on wii will bring up memory card menu

Start and coin button brings up in game uni-bios menu

Buttons are all buttons the neogeo buttons so check what you have a, b, c, d, start, and coin buttons mapped to on your controllers.

By the way in using uni-bios 3.3 and retroarch for wii 1.8.4 with the latest fba 2012 neogeo core that came bundled with the retroarch 1.8.4 wii build.

I've been testing the king of fighters games because my kids love them. All of them including the "large" over 32mb ones work but... Kof2000 takes forever to load like 2 minutes vs all the others are within 10 to 20 seconds. I have tried a few different uni-bioses as well as some non uni-bioses they all take about 2 minutes to load. The game does work without issue though.

Any thoughts on why so far only kof2000 takes 6x longer than all the others?

Uni-bioses tested from 2.0 to 3.3
Retroarch for wii 1.7.5(iirc) to 1.8.4
And I used rom converter v2

Btw awesome job on this wiimpathy, thinking outside the box and determination to make this work plus coding skills to do so is amazing!
