Stardew Valley celebrates sales milestone of 10 million copies sold worldwide

med_logo.png

Chances are, you've likely played Stardew Valley, or at the very least, have heard of it. That's because, since the game's launch in 2016, it's become a massive success, creating its own spin on the Harvest Moon formula. Though it originally launched for the PC, the game would later make its way to many platforms, such as the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and most recently, mobile devices, all while receiving multiple free content updates. Now, as of 2020, Stardew Valley has reached a major sales milestone, having sold 10 million copies in both physical and digital format in the four years since its launch. Are you one of those ten million players?

Hours into Stardew Valley I was still trying to defend Harvest Moon as my favourite game. I eventually gave up. Stardew Valley is on another level, it took everything Harvest Moon did right and made it so much better I don't even compare the two anymore. The music, gameplay, characters, countless features and cool hidden easter eggs create not only an awesome game, but a truly amazing experience. I admit I haven't played it in a while, but to say I completed everything there was to do before I left the game for a while would be untrue to say the least. If you haven't played this game, for all my opinion is worth, I definitely recommend it. Get it on sale on Steam if you have to, I'm pretty sure it'd run on my toaster. At least give the soundtrack a listen. It's even more remarkable when you consider the whole thing (bar multiplayer) was made by one person.

Stardew Valley is the game I really wanted to love, but just couldn't get into it - my main gripes come from time and energy limit, which results in rather stressful experience for a game designed with chill in mind. Still, I'm glad that it sold so well, and I wish its creators all the luck =)

Time is a limit, making it so you have to plan a little bit. But it's not too bad, considering there's no real time limit like Harvest Moon. It's not like you have a certain amount of years to do everything, you can take your time and not have to stress about anything really.
And energy, sure, but you can upgrade your energy meter and you can eat snacks to regain energy.

Give it another spin, and have a plan for the day. Decide on a daily goal. First just water your crops, to have that taken care of. Then go the thing for the day: talk to people, or fight in the caves, or go fishing. Bring snacks if your energy runs out, and keep watch on the clock so you head back in time for bed. :)
Oh, and take the growing times into consideration when buying seeds, so you don't waste seeds and time on that :P

Congratulations, it's well deserved. Most AAA games never even get close to 10 millions copies sold, so an indie made by only one guy doing it is super impressive.

I come from Rune Factory instead and well... let just say it not really the enough for me. The map is just too big and clunky, it usually take day to move somewhere or find someone. There is a lots of thing to do but I find myself spend most of the time moving from one spot to another instead. I gave up on talking to everyone or gift the villager everyday because it just waste so much time to find them (it not like they say anything interesting anyway). The game let you do a lots of thing but most of the day you don't have enough time to do it all. The graphic is... unique I guess? Maybe people who used to retro game may find receive it better but I find it quite bother to look at. Can't say much about character since for the whole first two season I play, I had never trigger anything because bonding with people is really hard and the daily dialogs is, well... they didn't say a lots really.

Stardew Valley is good but I just find it not very polished. Maybe it is because there is only one people working on it so they really not have enough time to go in deep with the mechanic or test run thing. But if you don't mind it then you may enjoy it.

Ah that's interesting! Yeah I probably agree with the whole moving between places thing. There needed to be some more done to save time there. I think there were single-use things you could build to teleport but they cost a lot for something that would be consumed. While the townspeople moving around on a schedule made things more lifelike, it also complicated things as it is, as you say, a rather large map. Harvest Moon and Rune Factory had schedules for its npcs too, but a smaller map meant it was far easier to find them, it wasn't a whole day's adventure to gift someone a flower.

I also came to Stardew Valley after playing Rune Factory (2 and 3), and loving them both. Stardew Valley does everything Harvest Moon did right, but left behind a lot of cool stuff that could be learned from Rune Factory. While I don't necessarily believe this makes it any less of a game, filling a Rune Factory craving is not going to be done by playing Stardew.

10 MILLIONS copies sold and still no cross platform play? mmm, not very OKAY.
Still a one person game where everything is made by just a single human being. Cross platform depends on the platforms more than on the developers. It is a great achievement by Concerned Ape to have sold 10 Million copies of game he made alone.

dude, this game reminds me other successful indie game called Super meat boy, it's creator Edmund with other pal alone made that game now they have small studio with bunch of devs to create other stuffs.

You see, 10M of Stardew Valley sold is insane and economically i'm sure he's able to make cross-play real, ofc, he could but he doesn't want.
