So I'm just starting to play Skyrim for the first time. Could anyone recommend mods for a first timer? There are so many but I have no idea where to start. I see Reddit has a guide but I'm guess many of their suggestions don't work on Switch?

Hm, that's strange. Seems to work for me. Just started a new game with that mod enabled, ran straight to Riften after the intro...

So, I dunno. Are you 100% sure you edited the ini file correctly? All files are where they are supposed to be, bsa's and so on?

My ini looks like this:
;### HERE YOU PUT THE ESP AND ESM MOD FILES YOU WANT TO LOAD, REMOVE THE ";" TO ACTIVATE IT ###
;_____________________________________________________________________________________________
sTestFile1=Dawnguard.esm
sTestFile2=HearthFires.esm
sTestFile3=Dragonborn.esm
sTestFile4=Inigo.esp
;sTestFile5=
...

+ further down:
;### HERE YOU PUT THE BSA MOD FILES YOU WANT TO LOAD ###
;_______________________________________________________

[Archive]
sResourceArchiveList=Skyrim - Misc.bsa, Skyrim - Shaders.bsa, Skyrim - Interface.bsa, Skyrim - Animations.bsa, Skyrim - Meshes0.bsa, Skyrim - Meshes1.bsa, Skyrim - Sounds.bsa, INIGO - Meshes.bsa, INIGO.bsa
sResourceArchiveList2=Skyrim - Voices_en0.bsa, Skyrim - Voices_en1.bsa, Skyrim - Textures0.bsa, Skyrim - Textures1.bsa, Skyrim - Textures2.bsa, Skyrim - Textures3.bsa, INIGO - Textures.bsa, INIGO - Voices.bsa
bLoadArchiveInMemory=1
sArchiveToLoadInMemoryList=Skyrim - Animations.bsa

...

When I try and install Inigo, he only comes with three files, the esp, a bsl file, and a bsa file. Where did you get "INIGO - Textures.bsa", "INIGO - Meshes.bsa", "INIGO.bsa", and "INIGO - Voices.bsa"? Right now he works in game but is purple and mute...

for any mods from the special edition nexus you have to convert them yourself
read, learn and have fun https://github.com/Lord-Akkrand/Skyrim-NX-Toolkit/wiki

Ok, I was just wondering what exactly needed to be converted. Sorry, I'm a bit new when it comes to Skyrim mods. I didn't really understand that ALL mods needed to be converted (save those that are from the Switch Skyrim section from Nexus).

Edit: Also, the tutorial is really vague and leaves out a lot of steps. I'm still at a loss as to how the conversion is done. I extracted the Inigo bsa, converted it using the tool (which took nearly 2 hours), and I get three files - inigo - meshes, inigo - textures, and inigo.bsa. These are much smaller files (the biggest being 10 megs) and obviously do NOT contain the proper voice files.

How do I sort the mods with mod manager? I set the path in the program and nothing shows up. Must one have Skyrim installed on pc?

You don't have to have it installed on PC, but it helps quite a bit. Best way I found, even though it's a huge PITA, is to have the PC version installed specifically for Switch mods so you can check load orders and such using a mod manager.

Here's what the NX Toolkit guys themselves recommend:
https://github.com/Lord-Akkrand/Skyrim-NX-Toolkit/wiki/2:-Creating-a-Clean-Load-Order
I'm not 100% certain, but I don't think you can fool MO2 to sort for you without having the game installed first.

With some trial and error you can sort manually, but it's a good idea to stay away from large and complicated mods that may require fiddling around with files on the PC and eat up all the RAM on the Switch. Keep patches and stuff like that on the top of the load order, then generate the load order using the LOAD_ORDER.BAT which adds the mods properly to the Skyrim switch ini file.

Regarding the Inigo mod from that earlier post, I don't remember any specifics as it was just a very brief test to try check compatibility for that other dude, but I don't think I did anything out of the ordinary other than simply running it through the CONVERT_MOD.BAT from the toolkit.

Good luck with the mods :)

Thanks! Yeah I saw that portion of the tutorial but in the end my goal was to NOT have Skyrim installed on my pc so I ended up doing it by hand with https://bethesda.net/community/topic/5795/how-to-load-order?language[]=en this guide. Luckily I only had about 5 mods so it wasn't too terribly difficult (though I'm not sure they're loaded correctly, but I haven't experienced any crashes)

What exactly does the LOAD_ORDER.bat do? How does it know which order to load them to the ini?

So with Inigo I did end up figuring it out. Turns out I converting the mod's file structure wrong - it had a parent folder called Data and within that folder was three files including the bsa that needed to convert, but since I followed the guide earlier in this thread about converting the Skyrim Special Edition patch which called for extracting the bsa first, I did that with the Inigo mod's bsa which produced an error. I had to concert the ENTIRE Data folder and doing so gave me the correct files.

It's amazing how much the mods improve the base game! It's my first playthrough of Skyrim ever so I'm having a blast - I'm a bit lost but it's still fun lol.

Now if only I could figure out how to fix skyui to display the button prompts correctly...

The load order bat points to a text file you make on the PC, inside the "working" directory, where you put the mods and stuff, you list all the mods in Notepad or similar, it then simply copies the order of the mods to the final Skyrim ini that you end up creating and copying to the switch sd card. It's actually far from user friendly, but it does the job.

There used to be another program that simplified all this considerably with a fairly decent gui, but I can't remember the name of it and can't seem to find it again on Nexusmods (maybe someone remembers what it was). My Windows harddrive died some months ago, so all that stuff is gone, my PC sucks for gaming either way, and for me, going back to Windows just for Skyrim is not happening... so kind of in the same boat - would be nice to have an easy way to manage mods, sorting etc., without having to have the game installed and relying on applications that are not quite suited for the task. Not to mention having to buy the game twice for a lot of people...

I totally agree that playing with mods on Skyrim is absolutely essential, I simply can't and won't go back to vanilla Skyrim :P

In response to the above, here is a WORKING bruma zip.
It does take up 3 mod slots, as one for DLC, one for Assets, and one for Heartland. merging it caused crashes upon entering Cyrodil

Hi.

Can you explain, please, how to make it run? I tried, but there are no guards near Pale gate in the game. I put files in right place and add them in skyrim ini file. Maybe I need to do something more?

if its bruma of cyrodil talk to the npc inside of the border house
As I said, there is no NPCs near the border. I saw a video on youtube how it should be, but nobody there. Maybe it's normal in the very beginning of the game and I must have some level for it. Or as I thought I did something wrong when install it.

No more mods. Clean install base and update, extract romfs, copy files from @pk92 archive and add files to Skyrim.ini.
this is how i have the game set up
