It's completely normal to make some features, even the whole app paid, but I think the developer should be upfront about it. In no modern app store it would even be a viable thing to do. No one to regulate the homebrew, though. I dislike a lot of blawar's decisions, but it's his software, he is entitled to do what he sees fit.
Nowhere on the official site it says that some features are paid. In the app it lists SX OS license exclusive features, but who would want to touch that with a ten foot pole? It's obvious that blawar has some kind of agreement with SX OS hence the whole “BEST™ OS, TOP© USER EXPERIENCE®” thing. Which he presents as a fact that is as far from reality as it could be. If it's meant to encourage me to buy SX OS license—it's doing the opposite. “I'm affiliated with Team Xecuter, I had an app that I was providing for free, but then I update it and decide to make some features paid, it's totally OK, buy SX OS, totally cool guys, my bros”. The only thing it does, it makes me to suspect that the next update for SX OS would be paid or something in that matter. Since they encourage such behavior (I don't know if you came up with this genius “promotion” by yourself or was it in any way coordinated with Team Xecuter), or at least don't discourage it, anything could be expected from them, too.
But, come on. Who would pay for Tinfoil on such conditions? You either have to buy a license to be a certified corsair (aka external drive ROM loading) or donate to HBG (which is not such a bad thing, I guess). It's the most ridiculous ass backwards business model I've ever heard of.
Be upfront about it, take money in some normal way, so people clearly know what they are missing and what money buys them. Otherwise it looks like a confusing dick move.

You are looking too deep into it. It is really this simple: atmosphere causes problems for users, who cause problems for me. Especially Kosmos / Hekate users. I am not of the belief that everyone should have a "totally open" and "configurable" CFW, especially one that isnt configured correctly out of the box like Kosmos, because this invariably leads to newb mistakes. Everytime a new firmware drops, I get flooded with reports from Kosmos users. Honestly, to avoid drama from banning kosmos, I likely just wont post many, if any, updates to Tinfoil and focus on SXOS exclusive software.

Why not just add this line to all error messages from Tinfoil :
If you're using the useless Kosmos, go try finding the right sig patches and do not report this as an issue of this software.

There, everyone happy.

Or alternatively: "Atmosphere and Kosmos are unsupported and as such any questions involving them will be ignored." Perhaps even require posters to specify their setup before answering questions.

There is a fix posted in their discord that fixes lock screen themes. It’s posted here too by Reece.

exFAT.....can.....corrupt.....your.....whole....SD.... It's horribly implemented on the Switch and can even affect non-hacked Switches. Just less likely for those since they are not using homebrew. So yea one crash can surely mess up all thousand Switch's you modded and are using exFAT on the SD. Especially when running any kinda of homebrew or cheats. It's been proven countless times, but you do you my guy and good luck to the 1000 Switches.

please do not spread false information. Exfat absolutely corrupts, every dev in the scene freely says so. And as someone who routinely handles support requests, exfat is a very flagrant offender for crashes and instability.

I can confirm this to be true. I was having issues with SX installer and Tinfoil not loading / installing. ran a surface test on my SD card and got 5 bad sectors. wiped partition. re-formatted to FAT32 and now everything is running perfect and fast.View attachment 193550

This is true for a lot of people, but that doesn't mean exFAT doesn't have a much higher risk of corruption problems. It absolutely does, and it is recommended that you switch to FAT32.

You can only lead a horse to water. You can't make them drink. When they lose their entire SD because of a homebrew app crash or full system crash, maybe they'll learn.

I've used Hekate/Kosmos since ALMOST day one. I Sold many units with that set up. Seriously the only issues for me, and there have not been many... is usually with atmosphere compatibility. And 99% of the time its tinfoil/goldleaf/edizon that may have issues. Then it gets fixed.

Recently the hbgshop 7.01 caused a problem where hbmenu didn't open in the album in applet mode, caused an error, but did open in regular when using a game. This was because the devs of hbgshop included the wrong hbl files in their zip. Usually this works with the hakete/kosmos setup , turns out they had the old hbl 2.2.0 on there and not one of the newer/newest ones. So I put the latest one there, and everything worked. Is this kosmos' fault.. nope. The point is people blaming kosmos are idiots and end users are going to ALWAYS have problems with EVERYTHING period!

I have a channel with tons of tutorials where I CLEARLY lay out everything and explain it in terms that a 7yr old can follow.. with visuals too! and guess what?? people still can't follow it and mess it up.

And don't tell me that SX OS is the end all best of cfw... it isn't. is it good...sure! is it the rebug or Rogero of the switch lol no not by a long shot.

People today are dumber than ever, suffer from A.D.D. x1000000000, they have a massive problem with comprehension because reading and/or watching something is only 50% of it, PROPER comprehension ... now THATS the problem! and on top of that they THINK they know everything and they rarely do and never can admit because their idiot parents taught them that they are always right.

So problems with kosmos, sx os, and everything regarding hacking, modding...etc will always be around as they have been and in large numbers and will just get worse and these people get dumber and breed in even bigger idiots than themselves. Sitting here and saying Kosmos or this or that is the problem is just dumb. I mean @blawar has to put LGBTQ hate and love for his false orange cheeto colored tyrant wanna be, false god in his app, so what does that tell you. So taking any advice from a hypocrite with an extreme agenda isn't advised.
