New official DualShock 4 attachment adds two extra buttons to the back of the controller

Your DualShock 4 might be getting a makeover next year, as Sony has debuted a new first-party accessory for their controller. Introduced as the Back Button Attachment, it snaps onto the back of any regular DualShock 4, and adds two buttons to the back panel of the gamepad. You can map these two keys to perform up to 16 different functions, such as the shoulder or face buttons of your choosing. There are three different profiles that can be set, as denoted by an OLED screen on the device. The Back Button Attachment will hit retail shelves late next month in the United States, for a price of $29.99, while the UK will get it slightly later, on February 14th.

All you guys saying it's useless

You control current gamepads with 2 fingers - thumb and index finger

We are really underutilizing our hands - this can allow you to hit O X Δ etc without taking your hand off of the right control stick. And you know, use at least one more of the neglected 3 fingers.

Really, in a perfect controller, the face buttons should all be on the back. The current layout is a holdover from old times and definitely not the best layout possible
Yes. This. Exactly.

I felt a real need for this when playing Fallen Order, or any souls-like game for that matter. Using items during combat without doing finger gymnastics is going to feel great.

The oled seems unnecessary. They could've just used a few status leds and made a much sleeker and less power consuming accessory for less development and manufacturing cost and more market accessibility.

But alas, PlayStation is a boneheaded American company now.

Also, buttons on the grips where your fingers actually sit to hold the controller would be better. Reminds me of how unergonomic the thumbsticks were on PS1 to 3 because they just slapped analog sticks onto a design not made for analog sticks.

I don't understand, what would you use this for? You can map existing buttons to it? Why don't you just push that button instead?

If you need to, say, reload in a shooter game, you have to take your thumb off the right analog stick, and move it up to square. That takes away a few precious seconds that could be saved if you just had to squeeze the back of the controller instead. I'm too stuck in my ways to benefit from that kind of control scheme, but it's proven to be crazy popular with third party "boutique" controllers.

It's more practical to assign jump/crouch and even swap weapons than reload. I'd think so, anyway. If you have to reload it won't matter what button it's mapped to. :b

Do we REALLY need an OLED screen for a GAME CONTROLLER?! (ノಠ益ಠ)ノ
Reminds me of a certain mouse I think from steelseries maybe which has a oled black n white screen below it LOL, like who the F* is going to see it, they could simply have added a speed button with bars or whatever on the side so that we could adjust speed while playing and knowing at what speed it would be without having to life the mouse and look under it lol so stupid...

oh god... the battery life on DS4 is already poor enough without a power sapping button and little OLED screen

I could MAYBE see this being helpful for people with disabilities or whatever. Maybe make it a little easier to hit certain buttons. I dunno.

Do people really think monochrome OLED screens are that power hungry??

It's a monochrome screen, it'll literally draw maybe 50-75mw max when turned on, and absolutely 0 if the display is all black, at which point only whatever is required for the PCB would be drawing power. OLED displays literally draw 0 power when displaying true blacks, as the pixels simply turn themselves off.

I'd be massively surprised if this thing changes the shit battery life on the DS4 by more than 20 whole minutes.

isnt it also an always on touchpad? whats the drain like from that? And the issue with the screen is more that its a pointless screen facing away from you at all times. 20 minutes of DS4 is like 15% of the battery lol

A touchscreen of that size would also draw extremely small amounts of power. While they do draw the same amount consistently regardless if it's being touched, the amount is usually small enough that it's not a big concern for a screen that size.

For example, a 3.5" touchscreen tft display for a Pi draws around 100mw when turned on and at maximum brightness, and the accessory here is definitely smaller than that and is OLED so it'll definitely draw much lower than that. I'd be surprised if the thing drew more than 100mw total while on and in use.

And now the battery for your Dualshock 4 will last half an hour. I would honestly like an addition for a AA battery compartment ala 360 controller. I have plenty rechargable batteries and those things last weeks on the 360 controllers.

Now THAT would be awesome. They'll never do it though.
