Hacking Unpatched on 9.1.0

Hi. I've just purchased an unpatched switch on 9.1.0.
I am currently backing up my nand.

I'm new to the switch hacking scene so a bit behind with all the the know how.

Basically before I start. Am I safe on current fw to use custom fw and back ups or do I need to wait.

If you have an unpatched unit, the firmware doesn't matter. Custom firmware will always work on these units. Of course, you have to wait for the developers that they update their custom firmwares.

You should use 90DNS and/or Incognito if you plan on connecting the Switch to the internet and don't want to be banned. Other than that, you're good to go with Atmosphere+signature patches and Tinfoil and/or HBG.

you should also get sx os for the convenience of running XCIs off of a hard drive that you can attach to your dock. I think mine is a terrrabyte and holds all those dance dance games and any games over 10gigs

and keep on-the-go games on your new 512 or 256 gig sd card

Its well worth it

Well I've managed to get it to work with my cart back ups....
Two questions:
How do I install game updates within atmosphere, as the games keep bugging me to update.
Second question, is they a way I can get straight in to atmosphere without having to select the fusee payload. ATM I select that after sending Hekate payload

You always need a payload which you have to send to the console. Otherwise it will not work. You can set up an autoboot in hekate which skips the hekate menu.

It's recommended to only use CFW on an emuNAND and Incognito patch it so that you can connect to wifi safely for use in homebrew: https://gbatemp.net/threads/incognito_rcm-wipe-personal-information-to-reduce-risk-of-ban.549462/
Keeping your sysNAND clean for online use, and to a lesser degree for safety (so that homebrew, malicious NSPs etc. can't mess up your sysNAND, and you always have a fallback, without relying on a NAND backup which sometimes gets lost or corrupted, usually through user error, but no matter what measures you take to avoid being left without a NAND backup when you need one, you can always have bad luck)
On that note, it's also a good idea to keep your NAND backup in multiple locations. I also recommend everyone make a SYS backup, as often that is all you need, it only takes up a couple GB and unlike the full rawnand backup, restoring it doesn't affect your user data like games and saves.
Do make sure you also back up boot0/boot1 as they are not included in the rawnand backup and they are needed when going between different firmware versions (though you can generate them with ChoiDujour, that only supports older FW versions, and is a bit of a hassle)

Can someone help me getting tinfoil to work. I put all the latest files in what I believe to be the correct folders but it continues to fail. Do I need to do anything with the product keys I got from lockpick?

Leave prod.keys in the same location Lockpick puts it, it should be loaded automatically from there if any homebrew needs it, but usually it's not needed.

Use this version of Tinfoil not the official one. The official one overwrites Atmosphere and HBL files with blawar's own forks, and essentially hijacks your setup. Put the original Atmosphere files back on the SD (everything minus the 3 .ini files) to make sure all traces of blawar's forks is gone.

So I downloaded the tinfoil mod, and tin foil. I installed just tinfoil folder in to the switch dir, tried both patched and unpatched nro on there own and both give me errors. The first being an error code when connected to the net, the second being " tin foil can not start" when in airplane mode.
I also get an error when launching Hb app store right after it finishes loading for the first time.
Also
I can install games via gold leaf fine but I can only install games under 4gb on fat 32. Exfat does not work at all. I have tried to connect via USB to pc to install games but zadig will not find my switch and gold leaf keeps telling me to connect to pc even though it's connected.

Just a heads up, I am ofw 9.1.0 using atmosphere.
