last year I picked up a Gamecube for buck, just the bare console, and started collecting all the bits to make it work, not there yet. BF sale at a thrift shop, no Gamecube stuff, but I bought a Wii, again bare console and started collecting bits to make it work (IOS 3.1 error 51420, gave up on it and taking it back today if I can). Week later, different thrift shop, I find another bare Wii console, but this one has a sticker that says all parts included at front desk. Well mostly all parts, I still needed a SD card, nunchucks, games, etc. but its on my desk and mostly working with Bootmii and homebrew installed and working. So here I am.

I did a fair amount of searching and this looks like the only still active Wii forum. Half my frustration is that I don't know what isn't working do to "things have changed" vs something wrong with my stuff.

Thanks for reading, this is meant as mostly an introduction, and I will put specific questions hopefully where they belong in other sections of the forum.

Hello.:)

Congratulations on your Buy.:)

As I understand you correct, you have the Homebrew Channel already installed ?
You may need an SD Card (not an actual or big one for the Moment,2 - 8 GB should work for now and formatted with FAT32 please).

Maybe with an sysCheck we can see,in which Shape your Wii actual is.

Please use this Manual and Tool:

https://gbatemp.net/threads/posting-a-system-check.300279/

This Tool creates an sysCheck.csv File on the Root of the SD Card. You can open it with the Windows Editor
and copy/paste the Content in your next Answer here.

Next Step is to use ModMii for updating your Softmod if necessary.

If you have Questions, please feel free to ask.:)

Thank you and
Good Luck.:)

Note I have two white Wii, the one with 3.1 I put aside instead of dealing with 51420 and IOS upgrades. The syscheck is for the second Wii with 4.3U.

I would put stuff in proper threads, but one thread start a day and I want to save next one for introduction. ;)

I have wifi, but no USB wifi adapter, so I am using a fresh from ebay $5 third party that claims Wii support usb ethernet dongle, which flashes plenty, gave me same 51420 on each Wii. Looking at trying Riiconnect, but haven't just yet.

I have LOTS of flash, but maybe just the ONE 2GB SD that fits the Wii, all the rest are adapters with microSD we use in phones etc. I've ordered some GameCube memory, and once I am sure of what to get will get a couple more Wii style flash.

I ran Modmii on my PC, selecting IOS for the 3.1 to update to 4.3, hopefully it now has the files, but I am waiting on getting more SD cards to keep the two Wii separate.

Hello.:)

Thank you for the sysCheck.

It says - No custom IOS installed.

The next Step for you (the safest and easiest Way if you like) to use @XFlak´s ModMii for Update this Wii´s Softmod.

https://gbatemp.net/threads/modmii-for-windows-official-support-topic.207126/

Simply drag an drop your sysCheck.csv on the ModMii Shortcut and it will open a new Window with the needed Files.
It will be downloaded to the Folder C:\[wherever you installed it]\ModMii\COPY_TO_SD

The Files will be installed with an WAD Manager like Multi Mod Manager or WiiMod Lite. Both Tools you can also get with ModMii.:)

Thank you and
Good Luck.:)

It doesn’t have to be that hard! Go to the system settings and select “Wii System Update”. Though it might be too late by now, since you already started messing with the IOSes.
Official updates can potentially lead to 003 bricks. Sure this is rare, but still possible. Besides, it is less steps to use modmii right off the bat. If you update officially you still need to install wads later, if you update using ModMii it will update during the install wads step

Speaking of which, I thought Nintendo was going to take down their download/update servers, rendering ModMii and NUS useless?

Could be the dongle, usb ethernet adapter, but from the start no go on internet connection with the Wii, error 51420 on both, so no updates that way. What I read online was that the error could be due to not having a current IOS, which led me to Modmii, at least for the 3.1 wii, I haven't put any modmii stuff on a SD yet, just ran it and downloaded to the pc.

Anything suggested to better check the USB ethernet adapter? Ebay vendor claimed Wii supported, which is why I chose that one.

Hello.:)

Is this now for the 4.3U or the 3.1x Wii ?
(because your sysCheck was for the 4.3x)

For the 3.1x it is maybe the only Chance to use Modmii and the SD Card to update this Wii.:(

Thank you.:)

I would proceed with Modmii, but if all else fails you can update the console using a game disc that comes with offline updates built-in. I don't know off the top of my head which games have which updates, but a quick Google search should yield results. In any case, if all goes well with Modmii you won't need to bother searching

51420 error on both the 3.1 and 4.3 consoles. I bought another SD card tonight, and will do the Modmii on both systems. I just wanted to wait until I had a tidy way to keep the files separate.

Is there a good reason, like two player etc. for keeping both consoles, and getting PS and sensor bar etc. for the second one?

If one of them can have BootMii installed as Boot2, that's a plus.

You could also use one of them for testing (like installing WADs), but that's dependent on what homebrew you plan to use. If it's just USB loaders and such, then you probably wouldn't need to test things on a secondary system.

Also, some games, like Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, have a function where you have to send something to another system over WiiConnect24 (RiiConnect24, nowadays) in order to get in-game unlockables. Since the online community is much smaller now, it would be useful to have two in that scenario.

Spare unit seems like good enough reason to keep it, since I couldn't find my receipt within 10 days for even a store credit return to the thrift shop.

BootMii is Boot2 on the 4.3 system, gotta name them soon as both with soon be 4.3 and BootMii as Boot2.

USB loading maybe most used, but I do like to tinker, so no telling what I may want to try. I have a ton of various media players, so no play to wear the mechanics for movies etc.
