Hey there. I need some help.

Somebody throw this new nintendo 3ds xl on my desk and aks me if I can bring them back to life. He had less informations about the device, only that the person he got this device from tried to flash "another system" to play any games he wont. I think he mean a CFW.

  • What happens when I start device (with our without 2ds game inserted)
    • There is just a permanently blue light. No sound, no display (both). T oshutdown I need to hold the power buton very very long or just pull out the accu.
    • When I close the lid the blue light is still there. When I put a magnet under the 'B' Button nothing happens. (no standby?)
  • What did I try to solve it
    • Checked all cables internal
    • try to hold the buttons to enter the recovery. Nothing changed, still blue light
    • Put in a ds-game (original). Nothing happend, no sound
    • Put in an acekard 2i. Nothing happend
    • Followed this tutorial to rebuild a nand. Flashed Ntrboot to my acekard-2-i. But I can not start with MAGNET+Start-Button+Select-Button into the special menu
    • I checked the 2 different fuses. One on the mainboard the other on kbd-panel. Both seems to be fine.
Can somebody tell me any other methods to bring this device back to life? Is there any other chance to enter the recovery-mode (some pins on the board?) or this 'start-select-menu'?
Is there a reason why my device wont go into the standby mode?

This sounds like a softbricked 3DS firmware where your friend uninstalled custom firmware and the system titles and nand files were left behind with mismatching signatures.

Try reviving it with the ntrboot method. Check my signature for flashcart options. Go with the R4i Gold 3DS Plus if you do not have another (o/n)(2/3)DS(i)(XL/LL)(lite/phat) system with working DS(i) mode.

  • Weak magnet/wrong spot.
  • Firmware/operating system not (fully) loaded. The software has to react to the magnetic “switch”.
Followed this tutorial to rebuild a nand. Flashed Ntrboot to my acekard-2-i. But I can not start with MAGNET+Start-Button+Select-Button into the special menu
Yes, ntrboot is definitely the way to go here if you can't enter GodMode9 by holding (Start) and/or Luma3DS settings by holding (Select).

Sadly it has many possible causes of failure. Normally I play the "process of elimination" game with this. On a none working device this is way harder. Possible causes of failure:
  • boot.firm not found on SD
    • file simply missing
    • fake/defective/bad SD
    • wrong filesystem (must be FAT32)
    • defective SD reader
  • ntrboot cartridge not found
    • badly/wrong flashed
    • contact issues (flashcarts tend to have such issues)
    • bad cartridge reader
  • Standby switch not triggered
    • weak magnet
    • wrong spot
  • Buttons not correctly pressed
    • the positioning is awkard. It may take some tries
    • I had the best success rate releasing "Power" button first
    • Some consoles seem to be more stubborn than others. The N2DSXL gave me a fight when I wanted to extract the universal legit Mario Kart 7
If you look at this list, you know what you would do on a fully working unit when trying ntrboot: Testing if SD and games are being read, testing your magnet while Home Menu is loaded. Using the single system method for flashing ntrboot (which eliminates any contact issues if you don't remove the cart until the work is done).
