Minecraft Bedrock version finally heads to PS4, adds crossplay with Xbox One and Switch

When it comes to crossplay titles on the PlayStation 4, Sony has had a history of keeping their ecosystem locked down, and keeping those on other consoles from playing together. Slowly, but surely, that reputation is being amended, with more games beginning to support console crossplay on the PS4. The latest game to get the crossplay treatment is none other than Minecraft, as the Bedrock edition of the game heads to the PlayStation 4 today. Now, Minecraft players on PlayStation 4 can play together with those on PC, Switch, Xbox, and all other platforms that the Bedrock edition supports, as shown in a new trailer, which references last year's "Better Together" video that originally introduced online play between the Switch and Xbox One in June 2018.

does this mean cross purchases of the add-on packs is available for the ps4 as well?

edit: i thought Sony releasing the Sony developed MLB the Show on xbox and switch starting with 2021, would of been on the front page first.

DLC bought for the legacy version should carry over (it did on all other platforms) but DLC bought on other platforms won't carry over to bedrock on ps4.

I don't know the nuances but I bought the Java version as well and received the windows store edition for free. I did it through the Mojang website, though I have no idea if that's still something they do.

With the windows store version of Minecraft, you can cross play with any platform.

As long as you have friends with xbox accounts (which you can make from within minecraft), you just add them as friends and voila. Whenever they're playing a game with multiplayer enabled, you can join them.

In my experience, directly connecting to friends' worlds has been spotty and sometimes doesn't even work.

The easiest way to do this is to subscribe to a realm which is a private server for up to 10 people. Anyone can join the realm at any time and y'all can do whatever you want. I've had an absolute blast with some buddies of mine. However, there are some drawback to realms. The render distance is incredibly low (supposedly to make performance smooth), about 10 chunks. Also, it's a little pricey at $10 USD per-month.

The final alternative (which I haven't tried) is buying and hosting a 3rd party server, but I don't know how well these work.

guess after months of trying, i knew that was only way to do multiplayer, anyway there are many community rent servers with seasoned events which are open to all people to join!

I wished there something like co-op to beat story mode :(

Glad to see they're continuing to reverse their restrictive cross-play policy. Now if they could just cut back on the censorship too...

No Betty, No Wilma, No Fred, No Barney? What is this crap? At least give us that little Martian Man.

Anyhow, it’s nice to finally see crossplay after all the talk.

Fuckin' finally. I've got it for Xbone and Switch, but just about everyone I know prefers to play on PS4 and.. yeah, soon enough, I'll actually be able to play with my friends.
You can actually play with yourself.
