If I recall correctly, the current plan is to sell the current batch of 400 with a 3D printed shell, but after they are sold out, MatinatorX plans to order another batch of 1000 with injection molded shells. If you're concerned about the quality of the prints, you could wait until the next batch is available before you buy a DI
I would have no issues waiting for a molded shell, especially since I'm sure that first batch will go quickly.

The form factor makes too just sense... Even when you're playing your carts you can just pop it into your card carrier. There's no reason you wouldn't have it on you.

Sure, my jig and dongle are always in my carrying case but that's not nearly as cool!

Yeah, I have a feeling they'll go like hot cakes. I have half a mind of waiting, like you, but I don't think I'll be able to hold back when it releases :P

I've been stalking the crap out of this thing... My only concern is the quality of the shell being 3D printed.
I don't know how 3D printers are now or how much nice premium ones can print but I wouldn't want to insert the rough mildly abrasive plastic I've felt into my slot....... Gigity
I can tell you, I put it out daily and its a good quality plastic :)
If fits quit nicly into the slot, is easy to remove.
dismantling it is also not hard / remove battery if u want.

And if u set it up right u can use single boot mode or normal boot mode where u can choose which payload to load
Shhh ;)

It's quite good considering.

As far as 3D prints go, the UV resin prints from the Anycubic Photons I use are about as good detail-wise (and thus surface finish-wise) as you'll get. However, no 3D printing process is perfect yet. There are still support structure marks on one side of every printed part. I have to remove them with sandpaper, and can't always remove them completely. Additionally, UV cured resin is fairly brittle. While I wouldn't call it fragile, it's not nearly as tough as something like injection molded polycarbonate.

In a perfect world, I would have skipped the 3D printed shells altogether and just gone for injection molding from the start. However, as a hobbyist with limited funds, the $10k it would cost for the molds is simply out of my budget. Unfortunately, this means I can only offer 3D printed DragonInjectors until I have enough money saved for those molds. I'm doing everything I can to make the highest quality 3D printed shells possible, and they do work quite well, but I'm not going to profess that they're comparable to an injection molded shell. If you're expecting a perfect, pristine product with microscopic tolerances, I would wait and hope that the next batch of 400 3D printed DragonInjectors all find homes. If that happens, I should be able to have an injection molded version ready soon after.

In other news, the latest versions of the bootloader and firmware were just finished, and Jerome is hard at work updating the configuration tool to support the new features. Attached is a quick mock-up of the new configuration panel. As always, if you aren't able or don't want to use the configuration tool, you can easily copy over the UF2 bootloader/firmware files to the DI yourself.

You can also configure the DragonInjector through the new CLI by pointing your terminal emulator of choice to the DI's USBSerial COM port.

Sources can be found at http://source.dragoninjector.com/

If anyone with homebrew development experience is interesting in helping to develop a homebrew app for DragonInjector configuration in return for a DragonInjector or two, please get in touch! The only condition is that it needs to be open source so other modchip developers can make use of it.

Work and responsibilities have kept me pretty busy the last couple of weeks but I'm still working hard on finishing the next batch of 400. I'm about 75% done now, so not long left.

@MatinatorX thanks for weighing in on the concerns, being real about it and the progress update!

I'm sure the quality of these prints is more than acceptable or you wouldn't be shipping them out, lest you get a bad rep for poor quality.
I'm a sucker for aesthetics so I'll just have to be patient :P

Is this product actually going to release or is the release date going to be constantly kicked down the road because I was intialy interested in buying it.

See the post above yours, @MatinatorX is reworking multiple soldered components smaller than a grain of rice on each of the 400 boards for this initial batch, that takes some time. 125 of us already have Dragon Injectors at this point so they will be out I imagine within a matter of weeks. After that he will be able to order correctly manufacturered boards and be able to put them together much faster to meet the demand. Keep in mind he has a demanding day job and this is personal project of his, 99% of other people would have quit a long time ago after running into any number of issues that popped up but even after more than a year he managed to stick with it and create IMHO the best payload injector ever.

FYI not dead, just buried under overtime this week. Still on track to get the boards done this week, though it's probably going to be next week that they ship. I have about 100 boards left to put the voltage divider (battery level) resistors on, then assembly.

Taken from discord today

Got a email saying back in stock!
Link takes me to a page saying it is retired XD

Unfortunately Tindie doesn't give me any way to contact waitlist or wishlist subscribers, so modifying the product page and putting the DI in stock for a few minutes was the only way I could notify those people that I've moved from Tindie to my own Shopify site.

I've since changed the product name as well to make it more clear that the product isn't actually retired, it's just moved storefronts.

Retiring the product on Tindie was also the only way I could point people to the new store without breaking the their TOS.

I'm a fan of Hackaday and the idea behind Tindie, but as a selling platform it kind of sucks. Feature-bare, not customizable, and they want a whopping 5% of every sale on top of the payment fees. I get the feeling they're aimed squarely at those selling 5 or 10 things a month who can't be bothered setting up a proper store, versus sellers shipping several hundred orders a month.

YES!!!
My wife asked, so I already put Dragon Injector on my Xmas list!! Just sent her the link and details!!

It's gonna be a Christmas that rocks this year!!

Just remember they could take a week to actually ship. And I would advise getting one asap when it launches. After this batch of 400 is gone there is a bit of a wait for the next one :O

One thing that just occurred to me.... The sound on the 2600 sucked less back then the harsh sound we hear now is from infinitely better speakers we have now, back when the 2600 was new speakers produced a almost muffled sound, like CRTs made old graphics look slightly better.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I wonder if I could recommend that to some emulation devs that perhaps the sound could use some smoothing out to simulate those old TVs
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think a few of the early systems could benefit from that, at least up to the 8 bit generation, by the 16 bit generation I think TVs had gotten a lot better in almost every way
