Nintendo 3DS firmware update 11.13.0-45 released

The 3DS has received a new update and, shockingly enough, the changelog doesn't mention stability for once! Firmware 11.13.0-45 has been released in all regions for both New and Old consoles and it is aimed towards fixing a bug with the system's StreetPass functionality. Sure enough, initial reports show that the only updated sysmodules are StreetPass, friends and Web browser data, alongside your usual NVer/CVer changes. The official release notes can be read below:

Ver. 11.13.0-45U (December 2nd, 2019)
  • Resolved an issue where StreetPass would not work in some cases.

Not much else is known at the time and consoles that have already been hacked via boot9strap should be able to update just fine but, as usual, you may want to refrain from installing the new firmware version until someone else gives the all clear - especially if you own a stock console that you wish to mod. This post will be kept up-to-date with any other useful hacking & homebrew related info.

They'll probably add actual Switch support in firmware update v11.632.0-45

Okay good because I bought a bunch of brand new used Switch game carts on large silver discs that were packaged in Sega CD game boxes, but the clerk told me Nintendo ran out of real boxes so it should be okay. This is the same clerk that I ended up dating that told me that her rash wasn't contagious and since I got it and she told me it's not contagious I should be okay. a/s/l?

Frozen black screen on boot most likely but it could vary. The unreleased streetpass hack should be fixed on latest firmware. The flaw for nand bricking still works but it needs a separate homebrew entrypoint, and all the "execute without your knowledge" entrypoints should be patched up on latest firm.
I'd rather not go into details on how it works for obvious reasons, but it's unfortunately very simple.

Gosh. Really? As in blue-screened? Even on the latest firmware? How would that work?

Unfortunately it is even worse than that. From what I understand it is quite possible to brick a system from userspace in a way that it is completely unfixable without hardware replacement, not even a ntrboot cart and full nand/system backup can fix it. Yes, even on the latest firmware.

I was unable to update.
i fixed it, i rebooted the router, couldnt update.
i updated my wifi on the 3ds, couldnt update.
i connected to my mobile phone, it finally updated.
my daughters N3DSXL updated fine 5 mins before so its not my wifi or router.

unsure what the problem is or was? the blue bar didnt show up, it failed before any blue started.

now im getting error 005-4270.
the router does have Googles DNS but as the other n3dsxl works fine i cant see why its only this n3dsxl with the problem.

atm im on the eshop using mobile data from my phone so its not a banned console.

At some point they have to add compatibility with Pokemon Home/Sleep, so I'd wager this is not the last update.

I understood that the 3DS was only going to be able to communicate with Pokemon Bank, and anything having to do with Pokemon Home would be done on the server side (or possibly from the Switch). I can't see how any kind of additional update would be necessary.

I mean, it seems to me like that kind of completely defeats the purpose of having a separate userland in the first place.

Userland execution is enough to brick a 3ds, so this is not a joke. It couldn't happen "automatically" as you suggest, but a malicious actor could craft a streethax payload that overwrites nand files.

Streetpass may not be super popular anymore these days, but I'd heartily recommend to anybody: keep your 3ds updated if you go hunting for tags. Especially at any nerd-cons where streetpass is known to still be kinda popular.

I kinda miss homepass, but I admit I'm actually glad it's kill with this exploit about to be in the wild.

Here's the 36c3 "streethax"* talk announcement just to help the danger sink in a bit:

* not the real name, I don't know what it will be called

So it's like a malware, but for the 3DS?

I just got my new3DS back after i lost my old3DS. It came on 11.10. I would like to know if i can hack it with ninjhax for 11.9 since its "the same" fw kinda? someone said. I'll try it see. But I'll be following a guide for fredminer this time. After i install emunand and everything is set up, ill update to 11.13 and be streetpassing, so bring them 3DSs with you! I also have pkmn sword + shield so i'll be pokebankin n stuff.

Also Nintendo needs to make a 4DS that does 4K, 3D, VR and plays Switch and WiiU Games!...
4DS! 4DS!!! 4DS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fredminer gives you b9s and Luma. Ninjahax is pretty much completely unrelated at this point.

Even Fredminer has been supplanted by bannerbomb3.
