I noticed this thing appear on my GameCube disc when I tried cleaning it (to the right):

What is it? It doesn't affect readability.

Hello.:)

It is very hard to say but it can be some sort of "Glue" between the different "Layers" of a DVD.

It is called Haze or Veil.
A few Years ago the "Lethal Weapon" DVD´s Part 1 and 2 has the same Issue. It does not affected the Playback.
But Warner Bros. "exchanged" the faulty DVD´s.

Thank you.:)

If I'm not mistaken, that's disc rot. Eventually, due to the adhesive used, and due to air naturally having some humidity in it, the layers start peeling apart at the edges. Once it spreads into the data area the data becomes unreadable.
This is an example of a really bad case of it:

I think people are having trouble identifying what part of the disc you are asking about. I know I am.

I can see the protection laser cuts. Gamecube discs have a list of sectors that are cut, so will cause a recoverable error when they are read. All optical discs have enough redundancy in the data that they can recalculate a certain amount of missing data.

I honestly am, but I think he meant just to the right of the center hole, as that's the only part that looks off to me. That could just be the lighting though.

I circled the part that I'm talking about:

My copy of Skies of Arcadia Legends has the same problem, I'm almost 100% sure this is caused by the american cases gripping onto the disc really fucking tightly, and being a bitch to pull discs from.

Only ever seen this problem from NTSC gamecube cases, never seen it on anything else, though as above, apparently lethal weapon has the same issue?

That's what I thought. Definitely looks like disc rot to me but as said could be the lighting. It's hard to tell for sure from the image. I can't really find a good image that shows what beginning disc rot looks like either. Only ones where it has already progressed so far that at least part of the data is unreadable.

It's a bit like a windscreen, instead of two pieces of glass laminated together it's two pieces of plastic.

It's not in a readable part of the disc, but like any crack it could spread.

Its a damn shame really. I actually like alot of the cover arts NTSC games have, but they oddly enough don't fit into PAL cases.
Skies of Arcadia in particular is a rare game, and though I don't plan on ever selling it, its a shame to know its cracked like that (still plays perfectly though).

Ahh I see. That makes a lot of sense.
I guess I never considered that because the cases we have in Europe are completely different. But I do own one NTSC game (Pokemon XD) and the center mechanism is not springy/flexible at all, it's basically just hard plastic.
