Hacking E73 error, where to start?

Well, I'm back.

I put my Xbox together last night, was enjoying some gaming with nice cool 65c temps. I loaded a bunch of back ups last night onto the unit, tested a few out, then went to bed. I came back to it later today and now I get one red light and the E73 error. Where should I start? If I botched the GPU/CPU thermal job could this be related? The CPU never went about 44 and the GPU above 65c. So bummed, I had this all set up and then this happens...the unit was working great last night.

Southbridge/Ethernet related problem.
Reflow of the southbridge/Ethernet might fix it, small posibility of a cold solderjoint under the GPU.

Damn mate, that's really unfortunate.

that's close to e74, which is general hardware failure. try unplugging everything (including hdd), then plugging everything back in. I'm not really sure if you caused it. it sounds more like a system problem.

Damn mate, that's really unfortunate.

I actually didn't install a heatsink onto the southbridge because I didn't think I would need it too...

My Glitch Chip is grounded to the Ethernet Shielding, maybe that could be related?

it may not be worth fixing. reflowing requires a machine that costs about $800-$1,000, so mostly people who offer a reflow/reball service have one. I think the going rate for a reflow is like $60; $80 if it's a reball of the gpu. you may be able to fix it (temporarily) with a heatgun, but I'm not sure.

Well I remember how I royally fucked up.

When I put the Xbox together, I forgot to put the 6 long screws through the thing The ones that feed through the shroud. I put them away in a special draw while I was working on them and I forgot to put them back. Could that have caused a heating issue? I'm not really sure what the 6 screws do. The really long ones.

Edit: I guess the hold down the top plastic part? That might have something to do with it.

you might try it, but I doubt it will work. it almost sounds like the system picked that time to fail. you may not have done anything wrong, so it could've been a coincidence.

You'd be incorrect - you don't need those screws

Running my retail Jasper missing those screws since 2013 or so. Your last thread makes me think you should just move the glitch chip far away from that area of the console - this would basically confirm the idea HDMI is broken from electronic interference and not anything else.

Did the console have bolts for the heat sinks or xclamps? The 6 screws being out won't matter.

It was just the regular X Clamps that come stock, ran the system for probably 10-12 hours with no issues after the thermal replacement. Temps were 44C and 65 C the whole time. Worked fine last night till I powered it off.

missing x clamps is a good indicator that the system has been opened before. it might've had a history of problems. since they're still on yours, who knows. if I were you, I'd return it to the seller.

Made the big mistake of purchasing off Craigslist, cash. Lesson learned it’s ebay now on for things like this.

Tried a few things but realized it’s not worth it to keep investing time into this unit.

If I were to buy a premodded off eBay. How do I drop my HDD into the slim? Do I need to buy some sort of caddy or adapter?

Do slims have longer boot time than jaspers? This unit booted in 1-10 seconds every time. Some sellers state up to 30 seconds on there’s.

Edit: I see the Xbox come with their own caddies for the drives. I guess I'll buy one with an HDD, is it easy to hotswap the drives like it was for the 360 drives? Or do you need to pry them open to swap the drives in them?

Could very well be that you'd need to reformat the HDD.
Don't think there's a need to from what I can remember.

Slims have similar boottimes, it all comes down to finetuning.
I've done a Slim recently that had boottimes of 2 or 3 glitchcycles max.

Yeh the Slim caddies are harder to open, prying them open is the only way.

Jaspers and Falcons are easiest/quickest to glitch imo. RGH 1.2 is spot on. Slims have built in wifi though so theres that. They glitch consistently but boot times can be longer. Like 10 - 15 seconds instead of 5 lol. A lot will glitch on first pulse though too. If they're 30 sec boot times its probably an older chip. Or they didn't tune it right.

Id still take it apart again and double check everything. While its apart you could try booting it up while pressing on the southbridge.
