No, this isn't an out of season April Fools' joke. This is Tesla's latest EV.

If the features of this truck wasn't already enough, apparently a solar power option is also planned.
Will be an option to add solar power that generates 15 miles per day, possibly more. Would love this to be self-powered. Adding fold out solar wings would generate 30 to 40 miles per day. Average miles per day in US is 30.

Is this something you want or is this too much?

This Tesla lark appears more like a cult every time it comes up.

That said I am not entirely sure what function such a thing serves.

Straight lines/edges are cheap. Curves are expensive.
This is definitely why the truck supposedly costs what it does. I don't like it. They could have been futuristic but still made it attractive. For me, it isn't.

Looks very futuristic, honestly.
If we all would have cars like these, we would adjust and this design would be “normal” for us. Just because it’s different doesn’t mean it’s bad.
2 years ago it was weird to see someone wearing AirPods but now I see them everywhere, it just became something normal.

it looks like taken straight from a futuristic movie.
Why are people so upset about “progress”?
Hey it’s something different, cars look the same since at least the last 15 years

Curved shapes are among the most strong (there is a reason arches were used in old buildings, and not because it looks cool, indeed car designers often hold back a bit lest your car look like a bunch of oil barrels going down the road, or they might kick such things to internal cavities), and aerodynamics also suffer a bit with flat surfaces like that. It might look like a stealth jet (I imagine that is what you are getting "futuristic" from) but they mostly only looked like that because computers weren't yet there to do better and that worked for then.
They might well have some whizz bang aerospace grade stainless steel superalloy (that is also somehow hung rather loosely on the vehicle -- rolling with the punches is a good plan) but that stuff is invariably expensive as anything and takes a whole bunch of extra tooling to create (it is also likely an absolute bastard to weld, and if they made easy to weld stainless then they have a rather large market they are not doing anything with) so I am not expecting that in the final build. Now things have been heading there for a while (carbon fibre and aluminium have only been headed off for conventional normal person cars thanks to some serious efforts on the part of steel makers, most of the really high end stuff has long since been abandoned to such materials). Likewise a direct impact on glass (as opposed to the usual glancing at an angle thing that otherwise bothers windscreens) does not show a great deal.

If they are making a destruction derby car then fantastic but I am not seeing much that will do for the common man.

This in addition to that guy chatting utter bollocks a lot of the time just to generate hype(rloop). Here they are seemingly exploiting a sketchy understanding of engineering, engineering failures and materials in people to try to puff themselves up which is why I am dubious.

If it was designed for ease of repair and ease of producing spare parts for the individual panels then I can understand but unfortunately we are now in an era where manufacturers don't like the idea of a car lasting a long time when they could be adopting the phone model and sell you a new one as soon as you paid the last installment.

I just want the van from Tango&Cash. Electrificate that, Elon!

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

I'm still waiting for the car's textures to load in, so it doesn't look all blocky.

Wait you mean that's what it's supposed to look like?

Oh no...
It is Minecraft, you know.

"I want to keep up our 'hip' and 'with it' image. What's cool and popular these days?"
"80s retro-futurism."
"What does that look like?"
"Dunno, triangles and shit?"
"Sold!"

The best bit was when Musk was going on about the Cybertruck having bulletproof and totally unbreakable glass and then much to his embarrassment this happened.

"This glass is fucking indestructible"

glass breaks

It looks pretty cool and all, but I gave up driving 20 years ago. It's one of the leading causes of death in the USA (far more than guns) and it pollutes the environment and cars are one of the leading factors to climate change. Anyone who claims they support cutting carbon and drive a car, especially when the world is supposed to end in 12 years is a fucking piece of shit hypocrite. Seeings as electric cars are created and use more resources in their creation thus polluting the environment even more than normal gas cars do I think you can see where I'm coming from. (Sorry to tell you, at the end of the day electric cars end up using more resources thus creating more carbon then driving a gas car). Plus, walking and using public transportation keeps you psychically active. So it looks cool and all, but I won't be buying one.
