Pokemon Sword and Shield sell 1.3 million copies in Japan, biggest debut for a Switch title

Pokemon-Sword-and-Shield-Pokedex-1206065.jpg

Pokemon Sword and Shield, like most mainline Pokemon games, have had a very successful first few days of release. The pair of games managed to shift 1,364,544 copies within three days after launch in their home country of Japan, dethroning Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's opening week sales record for the Nintendo Switch. This number includes only physical copies, as Media Create, who tracks Japanese game sales, does not count digital sales. Nintendo Switch hardware saw a boost in sales, as well, reaching 180,000 units sold during the launch window for Sword and Shield.

honestly its an ok game but they could have did way more with it such as =having an amiibo feature ...making more use out of the pokeball plus ...better graphics... longer story line .. included all past pokemon , fixing the frame rate stutter issue on some areas etc hopefully some addon content may come along down the line but i doubt it

Sad but expected for Pokemon games to sell so much considering the Switch success, yet again, another gen we tell Gamefreak that fans have no standards. It's not that the core game is bad, it's a fine game that I bet everyone can have fun with, its the fact that each installment we get less, and now, we get less with a price increase.

I just want to point out that, while most criticism against Sword/Shield are mostly valid, this is clearly not a lazy game, but a rushed one, since the release so many oversights and bugs have been showing up many are inclined to think the game was damaged due to Pokemon's release cycle. If anything, I'm actually worried if the devs had to work overtime and in a stressful environment to rush the game to a finished state.

Sales are a success and this gen will probably stay as mediocre as Sw/Sh but I hope the vocal criticism will encourage GameFreak to prioritize quality in their next generation even if it means Japan will have a week or two without a new Pokemon anime episode.

Despite all the complaints about dexit and last gen graphics - the consensus seems to be it's a fun game - which is really all that matters. The sales reflect that.
I think the reason why the sales are like that is because people are hungry for Pokemon and its on Switch. I wouldn't personally say that it sold well because the game is good per se.
XY sold good too but omg i hate that gen so much. After Satoru Iwata died (bless his soul for making the series good and so many other things he's done for Nintendo) the series pretty much died with him.

I suppose we can kiss the National Dex goodbye :(
Not so fast. Let's compare the Japanese sales according to a Twitter post:
1. Pokémon Black/White - 2.637.285
2. Pokémon X/Y - 2.096.050
3. Pokémon Sun/Moon - 1.905.107
4. Pokémon Black 2/White 2 - 1.618.621
5. Pokémon Diamond/Pearl - 1.586.360
6. Pokémon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire - 1.534.593
7. Pokémon Gold/Silver - 1.425.768
8. Pokémon Heart Gold/Soul Silver - 1.408.980
9. Pokémon Sword/Shield - 1.364.544
10. Pokémon Ruby/Sapphire - 1.245.003
11. Pokémon Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon - 1.199.814

We have yet to know the digital sales, though. Also we have yet to know how this keeps up for the next month.

My goodness, you reminded me that Nintendo has only just released the Incineroar amiibo and their latest Pokemon game has no amiibo support.

My point still stands. Over 1 million is still a lot, so much for "boycotting" the game. Entitled gamers I say.
By itself, that's a lot. But compared to past sales, that's not good compared to Pokemon X and Y, also a first game on a new system, and especially a high selling system like the Switch (to compare, the 3DS is a high selling system, too), so why settle for less? Also, "entitled", the old reliable. Dude, having standards about a product that is bought with money does not make us "entitled", especially a game that is sold for $60; this is not a birthday gift. So stop using that word if you really don't know what it means.

Children aren't stupid tho, old pokémon games were challenging enough for everybody. Newer games are remarkably easier to the point where you just can't lose anymore.
They weren't, honestly. Currently marathoning the series on my Android phone during work breaks, wrecking everyone with my squad of zubats and raticates like there's no tomorrow :D In a weird roundabout way, EXP share actually ended up making my game harder than previous entries - since I'm way more encouraged to experiment with teamups and B-tier monsters (instead of sticking to chosen faves to avoid grind), stuff like "Lv. 16 Nickit vs Lv. 17 Pikachu" tends to happen more often than "Lv. 40 Squirle vs Lv. 20 Charizard that dies in 2 hits".

I think the reason why the sales are like that is because people are hungry for Pokemon and its on Switch. I wouldn't personally say that it sold well because the game is good per se.
Eh, both aren't mutually exclusive - most likely a lot of people are hungry for new pokemon game and it delivers for them. As was said by somebody above, it's not like players intentionally try to torture themselves with a bad product, and if the game was nearly as broken and horrible as many claim it to be, it would lose momentum pretty fast regardless of fanboyism.
Besides, for all the scandals and shitstorms, reception outside the fandom was still pretty warm (overall 81 by critics, growing competitive scene, etc.), which isn't something that can be said about Metal Gear Survive or Fallout 76.

To be honest, if "shaming people for enjoying the game and holding them responsible for quality of the franchise" is the kind of attitude you want to weaponize, then I hope that the next Pokemon game will piss you off even more - just so you leave the fandom in frustration and stop acting like assholes towards others for your own unrealized expectations :grog:

I ain't shaming you. Am just disappointed you can't see just how lazily this game was made.
You don't think there's a problem when a sequel to anything is factually worse than the prequels?
Still, enjoy yer game, see ya in a few years when the next one are worse than SnS.
Gonna play some Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth instead.

There's stuff I kinda disagree with - mainly that the game is "factually worse" or that devs were actively lazy - but my main gripe with said attitude is how it implies that some fans are superior than the others, and how simply enjoying the game turns into some weird responsibility.

Like, what does it even mean, "We complain loudly because we care"? Are you trying to say that other fans don't care enough if they don't complain about things that primarily bother you? That they should actively dislike the product they actually like because the act of genuinely liking a product is a sign of "not caring"? That a game can't be enjoyed in spite of its flaws, and that you absolutely need to take a side, and not doing so will make you "an uncaring fan who eats this up"? That an actual and caring fan can't have a nuanced and personal opinion on the new release? I know I'm exaggerating and being nitpicky, but I can frankly poke for hours at why I just don't like the "You're too blind/naive" kind of mentality, especially with highly subjective pieces of media. It's just kinda gatekeeper-ish and doesn't benefit the fandom at all.

On a personal side, I do agree that it could expand on some features more, but I mainly was sold by: new cool pokemon designs, the camping/cooking aspect, strong multiplayer base, wild area. The game delivered on all of those expectations, so I'm happy with it. Cyber Sleuth may be an "objectively" better game, but it doesn't have anything going for my tastes, and I dislike its monster designs. And, well, it's kinda why putting things through perspective instead of claiming people as "too dumb to realize the flaws" matters. I see the cons, but pros outweigh for me, and I'm not a "dumber" or "inferior" fan for enjoying the game I got.

Fans are the reason we can’t have good things and complain about stupid international fans should learn to just let their nostalgia go away and let people have fun the way they developed the game was how they wanted to I’m having fun with it didn’t pay attention to the controversy (I could really care less about it) but I’m glad it sold well in the market it was made for.

Some of the prequels. Sun/Moon were completely unplayable by my standards. The story was 60% of the game, and the story was shit. I knew that as long as SwSh weren't that bad, I'd be satisfied, and thankfully it is a huge improvement over last gen despite its many flaws.

Well I was also kinda annoyed by the cut even though I didn't care that much, especially as I still don't know any of the last 2 generations as there are just way to many Pokemon and lots of them seem really awkward.

Still I "got" the game while waiting for my preorder to arrive (the shop I ordered sucks so bad ... they take at least another 10 days -.-V at least it was ~15€ off)

But the game isn't too bad ... some stuff suck really much like the mechanism that won't let you catch a Pokemon when you don't have the fitting badge .... just imagine your lvl 40 pkmn fights a level 38 opponents and when you try to catch it you get the message that you are to weak to catch it .... hat to beat several "strong" mons as I could not catch them.

And why do they add Dynamax when you can only use it in raids and Arena matches ? especially as every Gym Leader only uses it with his last Mon.
I also don't get the Gigadynamax ... so they can not evolve ... how do you get something like a Charizard when your Charmanda can not evolve if you get a GigaDynamax version of it ? I have traded the Evoli with one npc and was wondering why it wouldn't accept any evolution stone till I noticed it had this gigadynamax sign. (can you actually see if a mon can giga or not before catching or do I need to catch thousands of the same mon to finaly get a giga version ?)

The rest isn't to bad though.

The only reason other m was considered a success, was because it was the only Metroid entry that sold well in Japan. The guy responsible for the Metroid property after Gunpey Yokoi famously ignores criticisms about the game and fails to see why people have such a huge problem with it, still.
As an American player, I loved Other M. So, I don't know what problems they had with it. Maybe they just need to git gud.
