I've been away from the Wii hacking scene for a loooong time (I dug the old Wii out of storage). I've been reading about RiiConnect24 and it sounds like a pretty cool idea. RiiConnect24 website says you have to be on Menu version 4.3, otherwise mail will not work. I'm currently on 4.2.

Should I update to 4.3? Is RiiConnect worth it?
If so, what's the best way to update to 4.3?
Will I lose any modding functionality with 4.3?

Thanks!

modding 4.3 is easy, all functionality will be the same or even better if its been a long time, make sure you get all the latest ios files.

Thanks, Durelle, but that doesn't really answer the question of how I should update. ModMii or official update? Will updating effect my BootMii or HBC?

Afaik all you need to do is update to 4.3 then run update all your iOS files via was files . In the homebrew channel you can get a wad mamager. I'm sure some quick googling will find what your looking for. Or you can use modmii

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Dunno about bootmii tough but HBC shouldn't be affected

I am in the same situation and thought I would ask how this worked out for you? I am using menu 4.2 and would like to start using riiconnect24. From what I read, I can't update from nintendo anymore. I do have a lot of iOS installed on my sd card. Can anyone give me advice as to what modifications I need to make in order to start using riiconnect24 as well as what Consequences I can expect from the modifications. Thank you for any help on this.

Hello.:)

You can use RiiConnect with System Menu Version 4.2x.Only the MAIL Function did not work.

https://wii.guide/riiconnect24

In order to install RiiConnect24 you must be on Wii Menu version 4.3, otherwise mail won’t work.

Thank you.:)

Thank you for your responses. I don't use the mail function, so that is not a big deal to me. I am mainly interested in using the everybody votes channel again. After i completed the installation instructions. I changed the dns to what it said to. After that my wii failed the connection test and i was not able to reestablish an internet connection. I assumed it was due to the fact that i was still using menu 4.2. One other question. Do i need to delete my old everybody votes channel or does the patch install over the existing channel?

If you use the Guide, you have used the RiiConnect24 Patcher.

You will now patch your IOS, IOS31 and IOS80. This is required to use the Channels we support to change an RSA key used to sign the files, and contains some patches for Wii Mail. You also will download a patched version of the Everybody Votes Channel.

No,you do not have to re-install the Everybody Votes Channel.:)

Maybe yes,it is no bad Idea to Update your Wii to 4.3x.
But you need this only for RiiConnect, there are no other Benefits of it.:)

Do you now how to Achieve the Update ?
You maybe now about ModMii already ?

Thank you.:)

Yes, i used the riiconnect24 patcher from the guide on a windows computer. Then i used the wii mode lite to install the wads ios31, ios80, everybody votes, Nintendo channel. Everything was successful up to this point. Afterwards i tried patching nwc24msg.cfg by launching the riiconnect24 mail patcher from the homebrew channel. The screen went black and i had to restart the wii. After this i changed the primary dns to 164.132.44.106 and secondary dns to 8.8.8.8 The internet connection test failed and i became stuck at this point.

Your Internet Connection worked before ? You can see it on the Homebrew Channel, the WiFi Symbol in the lower right Corner.
You can also try to download Covers on the USBLoader GX/Configurable USBLoader or WiiFlow.:)

My internet connection was working before I changed the DNS. I tried changing the dns back but it still didn't work.
Thank you.:)

Please set a new Connection or delete the Existing one.
This has nothing to do with Riiconnect or your Wii System Menu Version.
If you set up a new Connection,it should have to work.:)

Thank you for your Assistance.
Good Luck.:)

Alexander1970. You are awesome. Thank you so much for your help. Deleting my internet setting and setting them up again worked perfectly. It did hang up on the 1st vote but I was expecting that and it worked fine after restarting the wii. I look forward to seeing what all has been restored. Do you know if the riiconnect24 guys send messages directly to the wii like nintendo used to? If they do, I will have to look for them somewhere else since I am still on system 4.2

Hello.:)

Great to hear it works now for you.:yay:

Every time you go into the Channel, you will see "New actual Polls" or "New Poll Results".:)
Messages from RiiConnect (I do not know if they send any at all..) on your Message Board will probably not work (because of Version 4.2x).
But Daily Events/Activities on your Wii of course.:)

Thank you.:)

One thing that just occurred to me.... The sound on the 2600 sucked less back then the harsh sound we hear now is from infinitely better speakers we have now, back when the 2600 was new speakers produced a almost muffled sound, like CRTs made old graphics look slightly better.

I wonder if I could recommend that to some emulation devs that perhaps the sound could use some smoothing out to simulate those old TVs
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think a few of the early systems could benefit from that, at least up to the 8 bit generation, by the 16 bit generation I think TVs had gotten a lot better in almost every way
