Hacking Just picked up an RGH'd 360 today, questions on how to get it fully set up from scratch.

I was able to fix it simply by resaving the profile. :)

Is the FTP on 360 kinda buggy?

I copied one GOD file over via USB and it launched fine in Aurora.

I wanted to use FTP for another since its more convenient. But Filezilla is randomly failing. They are all file with the name Data0001, Data0002, etc.

For some reason Data0001 will transfer, but Data0002 will fail, then Data0003/4 work, etc. They are all the same size too, and it can't be a file name issue. Never had this problem transferring files to my regular OG Xbox.

Anyway not a big deal, I got it working the way I want for now so appreciate all the help!

I've had that happen before. in my experience, it's fairly stable, but then you'll have random files that refuse to transfer. I don't know if this might affect it, but smb 1.0 (disabled by default in windows 10) will allow you to transfer files through windows explorer, bypassing the need for filezilla. if there are too many files being transferred, it's prone to failure, but you have the same problems on the ps3.

Just another idea on the Xbox 360 Artifacting issue. It’s quite odd, the temps on this thing don’t get very high. But it still Artifacting.

This morning I was installing Black Ops. Sometime during the install I was getting green lines on the screen. Temp on GPU was 55.Once it was done I immediately turned it off, turned it back on, and played Black Ops for 10 minutes without a single artifact. Max GPU temp was 60c

I’ve never experience this before but could it be a bad HDMI connection? I thought HDMI connections either worked or didn’t. But maybe it’s not seating all the way in?

I also noticing the glitching chip for the RGH is mounted directly on this shielding for the HDMI out, is that usual for that type of mod? I just feel like it’s not the GPU solder points because from what I read it would just Red Ring or E74 if the contact points were bad?

I have a brand new HDMI and 360 cable on the way.

It’s just in my experience, issues with GPUs are persistent. From boot onward there’s artifacts or no picture. This intermittent Artifacting is very odd to me.

E74 can be gradual - however, if games work without issues for that long I'm saying it's not the GPU

That glitch chip on the HDMI shield is odd though. I might just unmount it and run for awhile, plus run the console through component - if that's giving you trouble then, it might be dying. Finally, use a different TV if possible.

Update on the weird artifacting. I noticed a pattern, when the 360 is displaying light colors, the artifact appear clearly and are prominent. But if its rendering dark colors/black there isn't almost any artifacting. For example, playing BOPS 1 Zombies, if I positioned my camera towards a light area. I would see little white dots, but if I immediately panned the camera to a dark black corner, I could see no spots or artifacts. Which you would think would be most prominent against a dark screen. When I go into Aurora or the Xbox Dashboard, the artifacting gets bad going from dots to green lines and fuzz. But then I go into Xell Manager to manage some stuff and there is virtually no fuzz just small amounts near white text.

So it sounds like the HANA chip, but the system is cool. I am going to install a heatsink on it anyway and try using a "penny" trick where you put pressure on the chip to improve connection.

I believe the HANA chip is not used when using analog component out so hopefully this solves it, I have a component to HDMI adapter already so that should get me going on any TV.

One other thing is I am having an issue installing backup DLC. I have installed the latest title update for Black Ops via Aurora. Then I have my DLC which I have confirmed is the same region (same game title). I have enabled content patch in Dashlauncher and installed XM360, at first XM360 did not see the DLC. But thats because I had it in my game folder instead of HDD/Content. But when I followed a guide which said when I launch the game and run it, I should have a folder under the /00000000000/ directory with the title ID, I didn't. But I created one, then copied the /00000002/ folder with the content. XM360 sees it and was able to unlock it, but when I go into the game it doesn't see any of the DLC at all. I must be doing something wrong to not have the game folder appear under HDD:/Content/000000000000/. Do I have to do anything special when downloading a title update in Aurora to make it apply? Thats the only thing I can think of.

The game is a GOD version of the game, don't think that matters though.

EDIT: DLC Issue solved, I accidentally "un-enabled the title update in Aurora". Rechecked it and the DLC Shows.

Now how can I replace the Aurora background with a dark one until my cable comes in?

Just an update for anyone who cares.

I ran the Xbox 360 without the shroud directing airflow and it was worse, so there's something to it maybe being a temperature thing.

I tried the penny trick to add pressure to the HANA chip, but it also seemed to make it worse, there were more lines and artifacts. If I put pressure on the DVD drive right over where the pennies are, I could make more artificats appear on the screen. Also I would hear "buzz's" and "beeps" when certain colors/flashes appeared on the screen, the game would maybe hitch for a split second and then catch right up.

I'm not sure what that means, I don't think the HANA chip should create more artifacts when pressure is applied. I just undid everything and kept it at that. I did try one other thing, going down to 480p, everything is absolutely perfect at 480p, I played Zombies for over an hour with out even the slightest glitch.

I have heat sinks coming today, but I'm not sure it will help. If anything it will prevent the solder from getting warm enough to maybe melt and reconnect. I'm going to try it anyway, just worry it will be hard to remove them later if needed because I guess I will need to try and reflow. How hard is that? I found a reflow guns on Amazon for cheap, I've built computers from scratch so I'm familiar with being delicate around a motherboard, as long as you keep the gun moving and avoid caps, you should be fine for the most part right?

This video kinda shows what I deal with when its at its best:

Notice the snow only only light parts, not dark areas.

I should ask - why not just use component if you can? Unless it's more of a hobby project to get it fixed.

And reflowing is a good idea - don't ask me, however. I did manage to revive a 360 using an oven...

Well I’m just waiting to see if Component fixes it. I won’t have any cables to test with until Thursday. I kinda wanna see if I can fix it as a learning experience.

I briefly considered the oven method, but I figured it would likely undo the soldering done for the RGH mod.

So here’s an update for anyone whose following so far.

I fixed it! Well, for the most part. I managed to replace the thermal paste on the GPU and CPU, I used high performance thermal paste Grizzly Brand. It has dropped the temps on my 9700k by 5-7c and my 1080TI by 5-7c.

For the CPU is dropped temps by 5C to 41c. For the GPU it did not much at all. It seems to top out at 60c which is about the same as it did before. I wonder if maybe I applied too little? I might have slightly overdone it on the smaller GPU die. The heat sink I bought for the HANA chip fit perfectly and my Memory temps dropped about 5c too. What kind of temps can I achieve on a Jasper unit? Is it reasonable to expect 50c GPU with fresh thermal? I might try again if that’s the case.

At first it didn’t appear to fix anything, when it booted to 720p it artifactEd a bit. I switched to 1080i and it looked perfect. I played Black Ops Zombies for 20 minutes. And no issues. I was showing my wife the problem I was having with 720p and then this time there was no Artifacting! I booted up black ops and played in 720p for 20 minutes with zero problems.

So I don’t know how this fixed it. The temperature for everything are in spec before the changes. And the GPU improve didn’t at all. Maybe I reseated the heatsink when re-attaching th clamps? Anyway the menu still artifacts at 1080p, I don’t know what that means. But since no games play at that resolution I’m okay with that.

Thanks so much to everyone who helped me configure this Xbox. I have to say this community is super helpful and responsive! I have been in all the scenes and you guys are lucky to have a guy like DinoScene so active and helpful here!

Edit: Whats a really graphically intensive game for the 360? I wanna really settle in this new thermal paste and test this Xbox at 720p with the most stress.

Edit: Glitches at 1080p for a few seconds and now holding steady there too. :)

Halo 4

If you want to test 1080p (there's a handful of native games), Geometry Wars Evolved 2

Thanks. I must have gotten ahead of myself. All I did was tape the LED to the chassis and drop the DVD drive and tested it again, it’s happening again. All resolutions except 480p. I’m honestly just gonna forget about it until the complement cables in, but I wonder what happened? Maybe something was seated just right and then it got moved when I dropped the drive in? Is it possible the LED strips could he interference? Or a bad RGH could cause interference?

I want to get rid of the LEDs anyway? Am I safe to just pull the wire pin leads from the little plastic connectors or could that possibly cause some continuity issue?

Here’s an example of the LED strip:

It's hard to see where the LEDs are soldered but if they aren't connected to the glitch chip, you can remove them.
If they are connected to the glitch chip then they might be intended as a better visual for the debug led (the one that blinks during reset cycles) you can still remove them if you want to.
Idk anyone who would do debug LEDs like that but eh, stranger things have happened.

Thanks. They aren't connected to the glitch chip, I do wonder if maybe I could use the leads from soldering from the board to install a small fan of some sort? The LED wire's plug into these really small thin plastic rectangles. Almost like the mobo to front panel connectors when building a PC.

Anyway, got to the bottom of the issue, it has something to do with the digital out, I used some Xbox VGA cables and I was getting up to 1080p with zero issues. No big deal, I'll just use analog out for now and move on.

I feel like I might have botched the GPU thermal paste install, is it normal for Jasper GPUs to go up to 69c under 2 hours of load? I might redo it before putting this thing back together. Maybe its me not putting the case on, you would think leaving the top off would make the GPU cool faster, but maybe the air isn't flowing through as well even with the shroud?

Thanks again for all the advice!

360 is build on a negative air pressure design (I've added a 40mm fan on top of the 2nd GPU heatsink in me Falcon) so leaving the casing off will negatively effect the cooling design.
Unless you blast it with air from above...

If it's hooked up to 5v and not connected to a data line (idk why anyone does that but there are people who do that) you can harvest it to power your fan.

Edit: 69c is that with stock fanspeeds?

Thanks. I’m not sure how to tell if the LEDs are modded to 5v, is there a schematic I can reference and compare with my mobo? I’d love to wire a 120mm fan above the GPU, I should have it point down on the heatsink for max cooling?

If I were to use a spare PC chassis fan, I connect the red wire to the connector coming off the mobo providing power, and the black to lead connecting to the chassis? I think that’s the ground, so I’m not sure I could install one, unless I use each lead from the LED strip on the left and right of the mobo. I’m an electronics noob.

69C after two hours of Black Ops Zombies but I had the case off. It was just sitting in the chassis. So that might explain my higher temperatures post new thermal paste.

The 69c is at 90 percent fan speed, but again outside of the case. With an open top.

I also noticed the fan shroud doesn’t sit flush on the mobo, some RGH wires are hot glued right next to the shroud corner. It looks like the guy used a solder point right next to it, so on the GPU side it sits a few mm higher and not flush. Even if I scraped the hot glue I think it’s too close to the solder point. That could prevent the air from flowing directly off the heatsinks.

Multimeter not an option?
69c with 90% fanspeed is to high.
70c ish is what'd I expect from a stockish 360.

Cut a notch into the plastic of the shroud, don't meddle with the RGH wires.

Anecdotal - but I've ran a retail console without the RF shielding for years with 1000s of hours without problems.

It's really, really hard to kill a Jasper from high temps. Of course it's good to get your temps down, but those temps are absolutely fine, maybe not ideal but probably what most Jasper boards that haven't been messed with run at nowadays.

I think my RGH Jasper hits around mid 60s on the GPU but I haven't done any thermal mods on it yet.

Will do, I also saw a mod where a piece of cardboard or sheet metal is inserted between the two heatsinks under the shroud so that each fan is dedicated to pulling air off each heatsink instead of the CPU getting most of the air flow. That combined with taping the sides down with electrical tape should help air flow.
