New gpsp update fixes stuttering with GBA emulation on PS Vita, offers major performance increase

vitagba.jpg

While you've likely been enjoying GBA emulation for years, on various platforms, the PlayStation Vita hasn't always had an easy time of it. Despite being a very similar form factor to the original GBA, and still relatively portable, the handheld never made for an ideal platform to emulate Game Boy Advance games on. mGBA is still making progress on improving GBA emulation on the Vita, while gpsp has been dealing with a major bug, which causes noticeable stuttering ingame. That's not the case anymore, though, as Frangar, developer of gpsp, has made a significant update to the emulator which fixes the broken dynarec that has been plaguing it for the past three years. The bugfix, which allows for "a big increase in performance", has been merged into Libretro's master branch, and should be available to try out in the next nightly version of RetroArch.

Here's a comparison of FFVI run on mGBA versus gpsp via Adrenaline. The crappy sound performance on mGBA is simply because the game is running too slowly as you can see from the FPS counter. You can also see how even at the lower PSP level clocks, performance on adrenaline gpsp is vastly superior thanks to a dynarec plus some hacks.

This release is a big deal because now you don't have to boot into adrenaline to enjoy GBA games at fullspeed and can take advantage of the Vita's full resolution for better scaling. Hopefully you can also play most of the library at fullspeed without needing to mess with various hack tweaks and forks as with adrenaline gpsp.

perfect, now to wait for the gpsp core!!!

No offense, but considering the PS1 core doesn't crash and the gpSP core doesn't crash on any other platform, I'm going to call bs on that one. It's an issue with the 3DS build specifically. Also I'd like to point out that it used to work fine before.

And sleep mode.

Yes, it's an issue with the 3ds port and within that, the dynarec.
The guy who ported it is long gone, noone else wants to dive in and spend 3 years figuring out what's wrong, especially with vc being an option.

Not sure what before you're talking about, but this has been an issue since before ra 1.3

Yesterday's nightly build has the fixed core already.

arigato gozaimasu ,thx and danke mein freund.
@Clydefrosch any chance i can use my previous save states? c:
they are in .sav/svs format , and I'll miss the blue themed gpsp XD

but if i get to play full speed gba straight off the menu it's cool.

and the other thing is, i installed the full vpk of that retroarch zip, can i create a core of gpsp within the retroarch emulator ? thanks in advance.

Ah, i forgot to mention, you also need to download the data file and move the RetroArch folder inside the downloaded data archive to PS Vita data directory.

i don't think gpsp .sav files are compatible with other emulators .sav files. you can try copying them into the corresponding folders in /data/retroarch/ system/savefiles and /savestates (those might actually be in a location, i moved mine around a bit i think) and see how it goes from there.
if you mean from psp gpsp, it might work though.

I'm not sure what you mean by creating a core in the retroarch emulator. the gpsp core is part of the retroarch installation. if you try to open a gba game, it (and vba-next) should be presented as options for you to chose.

i downloaded that and got retroarch folder , i put "retroarch" into the root of ux0

am i supposed to move it elsewhere?
and regarding the core, i mean like having retroarch always boot with gpsp as core like as base because that's the only emulator i would like to use.

and yes my saves are from gpsp (from adrenalines psp).
hopefully they work.

i believe it expects the files to be in the data folder.

and no, i thing on vita, retroarch can't load a core like that. but if you only open content and go to your gba games, it wont load any others either

There should be a retroarch folder in there, you should merge those folders.
