Yes. It's the 2013 models that stopped working on the latest. 2014+ uses the crummy R4 kernel that autoupdates and what not.

Thanks for the confirmation. I thought I'd be having issue not making the flash cart to work with the 3DS on firmware 11.6. I actually was able to confirm it myself. But as a caveat, it did not have 100% compatibility with all DS games.
Yep. I'm not really planning to use it to play games. I can do that with TWiLight Menu++ on my CFW 3DS. What it is good for is dumping GBA ROMs and saves using GBA Backup Tool on a regular DS.
Yep I'm 42 now. I dug my NDS Lite and gave it some life. My Twins are now 7 and I'm passing it to them. And since they're twins I bought a used NDS for the other twin. Here's the thing: My NDS Lite has an R4i pocket inside and it works fine. Now the one I bought got nothing so two days ago I was reading this thread to refresh and catch up. Now, while I'm digging again for some micro-sd cards I found out I have another R4. I googled it up and turns out it was the original R4 the silver one that says revolution for DS. I forgot what it doesn't do coz there must be a significant reason why I change it to r4i pocket and retire it in a DS cart locket.

I've got a r4 3ds upgrade sdhc revolution "Gold pro" from 2017, yellow/gold cart with a gold sticker.
I tried to boot up the other day and got a "firmware expired" message.
Tried the website to get said firmware, and the website seems to be down. Is this temporary, or permanent? Is there another place I can get the firmware?

This happens to allot of people,the problem can be: The cart had been discontinued or you bought a fake r4 flash cart

I managed to dig out my original R4 cart I got as a birthday present from my brother over a decade ago. As best I can tell, it may be an R4v2.
There's nothing on the microSD card though, so trying to get the firmware. Wood R4 seems to be the only option, but all links here lead to dead websites (most to Filetrip), including the links in this thread. Is there anywhere else to get a copy of the Wood R4 firmware?

I think a few of the early systems could benefit from that, at least up to the 8 bit generation, by the 16 bit generation I think TVs had gotten a lot better in almost every way

Just give it a try, but honestly if you have a 3DS you can play DS games without a card just off the internal SD card
