Trying to get my Wii back to full stock without bricking it.

It is a model #. RVL-001 (USA) and shows ver 4.3U

Many years ago it was installed with:

LoadMii
Configurable USB Boot Loader
The Homebrew Channel

I can see the above in the channels and there is one additional channel with a spinning CD (no words on it).

Not sure if Bootmii or Hackmii was installed (like I mentioned it was MANY years ago and I don't recall the steps that was done on it).

There were no physical mods done to the unit.

How do I basically see what I have, and then take the steps to back it all out? Want to give it to the grandkids and don't want them having any issues running any of the game disks we have now.

If more information is needed, just let me know. Appreciate any guidance I can get! Thanks

There's no need to unhack a console. My advice? Rehack the wii and update to 4.3 using ModMii as if it were never modded before, this will overwrite any old dirty hacks you may have in place with a generally agreed upon optimal set up.

At the very end, the last step you should do is uninstall any channels you don't want shown right from the system settings/data management menu. This removes all visible traces of a softmod from the wii and it will still operate like a stock wii.

If it were me I would even leave the homebrew channel installed and just delete or rename the apps folder from my SD card. Without a properly configured SD card (or hard drive) you can't do anything by accident to the wii in the homebrew channel.

Then you can have the best of both worlds. Plug in a hard drive when you want the world at your fingertips with a soft modded wii, or disconnect the hard drive for that virgin old school feel.

And if you want my final opinion, your grandkids would flip 100 times more over a softmodded console running a USB loader (and emulators) than compared to a stock wii. In which case just run with modmii, it's easy to use and will get you up and running with the latest and greatest in 15-30 minutes, maybe longer if it's your first time doing something like this but not by much.

Edit: the reason why it took me so long to reply was because I hate telling ppl asking to unhack a wii that there's no point. If you honestly want to remove all traces it's virtually impossible. You can get close but in so doing you are walking a very fine and dangerous line. If the console is softmodded properly (e.g. using ModMii) then removing the visible traces of a softmod from a wii is the safest course of action.

Anyone have any suggestions or recommendations?
Hello.:)

This is ONLY if know what you are doing and you do not keep any previously downloaded Games/Applications from the Wii Shop.

You need:

- BootMii installed
- a NAND Backup (it is recommended a "working" one.:D)
- the Tool "Ohneschanzenegger":
https://wiibrew.org/wiki/Ohneschwanzenegger
- a little Tools described in the Manual to achive this:
http://spawn.link/factory-reset-revirginizing-your-wii/

Please NOTE:

After this your Wii is like you "unpacked" it and power it on the FIRST Time.
There is nothing on your Wii,also Channels/downloaded Games/VC Console and so on you previously installed are now gone !!!

Thank you.:)

P.S. I would rather follow @XFlak´s suggestions.:D

@XFlak

Sorry for the delay!!

Thank you! I will follow your guidance on this.

I downloaded the Modmii program and answered all the questions and just put the files in a folder instead of a SD card for now. Just testing to see how it works. When I do it live I will put them on the SD card.

Once I have the files on the SD card, do I just insert the card and restart the Wii? Or is there a sequence I need to follow to initiate the overwritting? Did not see it in the instructions the program created.

Also, I believe I am already on 4.3U. Does that make a difference?

Thanks again!

Hello.:)

Wii Version 4.3U is ok.

Did you also generated the Guide with your ModMii Downloads ?
Opens as a new Window on your Internet Browser like this:

    • Your chosen options

This guide was generated using the following parameters:
    • Install and\or update the Homebrew Channel and BootMii
    • Install recommended cIOSs
    • Install and\or update Priiloader
    • Update active IOSs (can be disabled in options)
    • Do not Install a cMIOS (can be enabled in options)
    • Install a USB-Loader Forwarder Channel (can be disabled in options)
    • Important Notes
    • This guide does NOT require a Wifi connection on your Wii.
    • An SD card formatted to FAT32 required (best results are with SD cards, SDHC cards will only work on System Menu's 4.0 or above).
    • If you get errors during any of the steps reformat your SD card as FAT or FAT32
    • Turn off WiiConnect24 and take out all gamecube memory cards/controllers when modding the Wii (unless instructed otherwise).
    • If your Wii ever freezes, hold the power button on the Wii for 5 seconds to power it off then try again.
    • Don’t ever accept a new Nintendo update without first googling to see if it’s safe. The last update (to 4.3) was released in late June 2010. If you accept an official Nintendo update after modding the Wii, you may lose some or all of your modifications.
    • Never uninstall a system menu or IOS.
    • Do not install untested WADs/themes without Bootmii or Priiloader installed.
    • This custom guide is great start, but Wii modding is always evolving. Check for updates online, and remember, google is your friend.
    • If you have questions, a more detailed guide can be found at www.sites.google.com/site/completesg/
    • Hacking your Wii
      • Install Priiloader

      Priiloader.gif

Launch "Priiloader 236 Mod" via the Homebrew Channel
After the Priiloader Installer loads, press + to install it.
After successfully installing Priiloader, access it by powering off the Wii, then powering it back on while holding reset until you see the Priiloader menu.
You should install some system menu hacks now (by going to System Menu hacks option).

      RECOMMENDED HACKS
      • Block Disc Updates
      • Block Online Updates
      • Replace Health Screen
      • Move Disc Channel

The priiloader menu is white by default, you can change it to black in the Priiloader settings if you prefer.

One of the special functions of Priiloader is that it can autoboot any app/file instead of the system menu. Some apps (like crazyIntro) can't be used without it.
For details on how to do so, visit www.sites.google.com/site/completesg/system-hacks/priiloader
      • Install WADs

      WADs.gif

Load Multi-Mod Manager (MMM) via the HomeBrew Channel.
If IOS236 is not already loaded, select "Load another IOS", then select IOS236
Note: If this step fails with error -ret 2011 or other, you may need to retry patching IOS236. If the Wii was previously softmodded, you can try loading cIOS250 (or others like 202,222,223,224,236,249)

In Multi-Mod Manager's main menu, go down to select "WAD Manager".
Install the following WADs from the WAD folder (this list of WADs is unique to the information you provided ModMii).
Be careful not to install any additional WADs that may have been previously saved in this folder (they may be safe, but I cannot say for sure).

Mark each of the following WADs for installation by navigating to each WAD and hitting "+"
Alternatively, you can hold "+" for 2 seconds to select all the WADs in the folder.
After you've marked all the WADs listed below, press 'A' twice to install them.

If any files fail to install properly, they will remain marked for installation, so just retry installing those files.

Your unique list of WADs to install are as follows:
      • IOS11v16174(IOS60v6174[FS-ES-NP-VP-DIP])
      • IOS20v16174(IOS60v6174[FS-ES-NP-VP-DIP])

      • IOS61-64-v5662
      • IOS62-64-v6430

      • Reinstall the Homebrew Channel

      HBCIOS.gif

In the HomeBrew Channel, hit the "home" button. In the top right corner you will see the IOS used by the HBC.
If the HBC is using IOS58 and your HBC is not upside-down, you can skip this step.

If the HBC is not using IOS58 or it is upside-down, you should continue with this step to reinstall it.

      ReinstallHBC.gif

Launch the HackMii_Installer via the HBC.
Use the Hackmii Installer to fix/re-install the HBC (using IOS58). Once you've successfully reinstalled the HBC, you can move onto the next step of the guide.
    • After modding your Wii

After you are done modding your Wii, you can optionally delete any unnecesarry files by using ModMii's "File Cleanup" Feature.

If you used Bannerbomb and choose not to use the File Cleanup feature, in order to avoid having your Wii freeze when accessing the SD Card Menu, you should delete the "aktn" folder where bannerbomb is saved (SD:\private\wii\title\aktn), or rename the entire "private" folder.

At this point you're practically done.
Now you should be downloading the latest homebrew applications and setting them up on your SD Card (or FAT32 USB Hard Drive) so they can be launched via the HBC.

For playing your backups off a USB hard drive, run the USB-Loader Setup feature from ModMii's Main Menu.

    For downloading applications, you should:
    • Check out ModMii's batch download pages as it has many popular apps available for download.
    • Download Homebrew Browser via ModMii to get many popular apps, but this is an online only Wii application.
    • For those without internet on their Wii, check out this list of Homebrew applications.
    Another great resource is webrewwii.blogspot.com

After getting whatever apps you want, you should get a boot.dol file and possibly a icon.png and meta.xml.
For HBC to read your SD/USB correctly, your card must be structured SD:/apps/application name/boot.dol
If you have a *.dol not named boot.dol, rename it boot.dol, otherwise it will not be recognized by the HBC.
(optional: the icon.png and meta.xml should be saved in the same place as the boot.dol)

ModMii was written entirely by me, XFlak; however, without the help of many other very talented people ModMii would not exist.

You have maybe many different Files/Folders in your COPY_TO_SD Folder:

- "apps" like MMM,Priiloader,BootMii/HackMii and more
- "wad" with many Updates for your System.

Is this correct ?

If YES,then you read carefully the generated Guide. It tells you

- to install/use HackMii/BootMii Installer and Priiloader first
- then to use the Multi Mod Manager (MMM) for installing the WAD Files

Good Luck.
Thank you.:)

Yes. I did get the install. Reading through it now.

Trying to get the files now, but am getting multiple window popup errors like this:

Content #2 (Content ID:0x0000013; Index: 0x0001): Hashes do not match! The content might be corrupted!

Tried to post an image, but it won't let me.

Is this an issue?

Thanks!

The error came up on my PC when I was putting the files to my SD card. The modmii program opens another window which appears to be the downloads. Right now it is stuck on Patch iOS 1.4 by Leath1 ... Loading WAD

have not reached the part to install on the the Wii yet.

Ok,that explains all.Sorry.:)

I did a Update/Download a few Minutes ago and all works fine.

- Did you use a Windows PC ?
- Did you use ModMii or the ModMiiSkin Version ?
- Did you run ModMii as Administrator ?
- is the PC directly connected to the Internet or with an Router ?
- maybe you have a Security/Router Issue...

Thank you.:)

No problem. I appreciate you taking the time to help!

I had a 2GB card in the Wii and it seems to have died. So I tried a 32MB. I think it ran out of space which is why I think I got the error.

Trying to find a SD card around here now, so I can get it going. I will let you know if I run into any issues after I find a suitable card.

I guess I should have added, does the SD card always stay in then? And what happens if it gets removed?

Hello,

an advice :

when you play or other things, always leave the SD card in the wii. it will work much better

SD card removed and launch usb loader gx, may not start or have a black screen.

some launchers kick you to the main menu.
Maybe you are unable to boot if you shut the console down.

Thank you!!

If you have a "good" Softmodded Wii:

If have BootMii as boot2 installed, the Wii boots into the regular Wii Menu (Safety/Health Screen).

If you have configured Priiloader to boot into Homebrew Channel, the Wii boots straight into the Homebrew Channel with no Applications shown.:D

That is the Worst, that can happen.:)

If your Wii is "not so good" Modded, who knows what happens....:D

Thank you.:)

You can move the homebrew to USB and load everything from there, then you don't need a SD card. But otherwise HBC will just show a blank screen with the HBC background, forwarders will just not load if they can't find the corresponding homebrew.
