Hey guys,
my New 3DS XL wont boot anymore with a sd card inserted, if i take the card out i can boot into system, into luma and into gm9, with sd card the blue light turns on for a moment, turns back off again and nothing else happens.

I tried to boot into gm9 and insert the sd card after booting, it tells me it couldn't mount the card and asks me to retry, nothing else.

How can i get my 3ds to boot again with a card inserted?

Bad connection between the microSD card and card reader.
  1. Wipe the contact pins on the SD card with a cloth or shirt. Check for surface grime.
  2. Blow dust out of the card reader port with canned air.
    • Do not use blow with your mouth. Your lungs and lips can't output enough concentrated air pressure at such a tiny hole. Spit that gets in will corrode the reader pins.
  3. Try reinsertions at slightly different angles.

Without the microSD card inserted in the n3DSXL, turn on the system and hold the (SELECT) button. What version do you see in the Luma3DS v#.# configuration?
It's showing Luma3DS v9.1 configuration.

It also shows "Booted from CTRNAND via B9S" if that's important.

Of all the spare SD cards that you have, take the smallest sized one and do this.
  1. Copy everything off the SD card to a computer.
  2. Quadruple reformat.
    • The card must be formatted in those exact settings or else the 3DS won't be able to communicate with it.
  3. Download Luma3DS v9.1 and extract/add to the root of the card.
    • sdmc:/boot.firm
  4. Insert the card into the n3DSXL, turn on the system, and hold (SELECT) button.
Not only should you see Luma3DS v9.1 configuration, the bottom screen should say Booted from SD via B9S.

If the 3DS fails to boot or read the card, the card reader is probably broken.

It seems to be a broken card reader, will look for a replacement, but thanks for your help.

Another way to clean the microSD card reader.
  1. Remove the 3DS XL battery. Press and hold the (POWER) button for 30 seconds. Press several more times to ensure full discharge.
  2. Take a tooth brush and dip the bristles in isopropyl rubbing alcohol (91% concentration). Brush the insides of card reader slot.
    1. Don't substitute for other solutions: plain water, medical topical antiseptics, or miscellaneous cleaners/lubricants (Windex, WD-40).
  3. Use a hair dryer to hasten the drying step.
