I have a question which I believe doesn't warrant a thread as it probably has been asked before.

If I manually remove an installed game on my 3DS from the SD card, cut+paste it in my PC hard drive, and later recut+paste it back to the SD, will the game function normally on the 3DS?

For instance: I have Dragon Quest XI in Japanese installed on my 3DS, but it takes quite a lot of space I could use for other things now. If I uninstall it, I won't have space to reinstall it later using FBI as I'm going to need double the free space it already occupies. If I remove its files and back it up, later restoring them to the SD, will the game function as expected?

If so, where are those files located and how can I identify them? Is there an easy way, an specific identification or such, or would I have to take a look at every single folder's size?

EDIT: I'm using Luma3DS, if that matters.

I believe so. I installed it when I installed my CFW, if I'm not mistaken. It's the one whose black-screen menu appeared once or twice during the installation, isn't it? I'm running Luma3DS; edited the original post for context as I realised this info was probably missing.

could surfingbird backup the save data with checkpoint?
When a game title is delisted from HOME Menu due to missing tickets or damaged database, save managers like Checkpoint and JKSM won't interact with that game's save data.

Missing tickets can be fixed with faketik but damaged database *(as of now) does require CIA reinstall.

To get around this problem, one has to pull out a copy of its 00000001.sav, backup and reinstall that game's CIA, and then paste back that kept copy of the 00000001.sav. As simple as this stupid process seems, it's ridiculously tedious when done manually. Luckily, this has been solved before as seen in:
***

* It may be possible to directly fix/edit the SD card's title.db and import.db from the research gathered here.

Okay here is what you do.

step:1 Enter godmode9 You should see a list of directories navigate to the directory labeled
[A:] SYSNAND SD

step:2 Once you have entered the following directory you should see a list of folders enter the folder labeled title

step:3 In this folder there should be a list of folders with varying names such as "00040000" enter the folder at the top of this list now you should see a even longer list of folders these folders contain your app data enter any one of these folders

step:4 Now enter the folder labeled content once in this folder you should see a list of files select the first file on the list that has the .app extension now down on the bottom screen on you 3ds there should be a list of options select NCCH image options... if you wish to see what title you are about to make a cia of simply select Show Title info

step:5 To build a cia of the app simply select Build cia from file options now wait for the process to complete once it has ended in 0:/gm9/out there should be a cia in rename it to something smaller if you like okay now to install the cia's i have only used twilight menu once so if you can install cia's with that then by all means do it but i will show you how to do it with fbi

step:6 Power on your 3ds and enter a random app such as Download Play now access the Rosaline menu and select Miscellaneous options select Switch the hb. title to the current app. now press home close the suspended software and enter it again you should have booted up the homebrew launcher now scroll down the list to fbi select it and install the cias. i hope this helps you if you have any questions enter them below thank you.
Thank you so much dude you just save my life....I am eternally grateful

I have a 9.5.0-22U new 3DS and I believe I would like to set up emuNAND.

I've read though https://3ds.hacks.guide/ but it seems like the end goal is to have CFW insatlled on sysNAND, not on emuNAND. Is this the preferred way even if I want to use emuNAND? I understand with Boot9Strap I can recovery sysNAND if I mess it up, I'd still prefer to have a clean sysNAND and do everything on emuNAND. Is there any tutorials on setting this up?

Last question, Is it possible to get a clean dump of sysNAND before I start messing with things? I see in the forums that it's crazy to remove b9s once it's installed, which is fine... I'd just like to get a backup of sysNAND as early in the process as I can.

EmuNAND is not needed anymore if you want to use it as a form of security precaution. The B9S installation is done on the real NAND in any case. Switching back and forth between EmuNAND and SysNAND can cause trouble. Simply mentioning EmuNAND on 3DS seems to "trigger" some forum members. ["You don't need that!!11! It is outdated and useless!!"]

If you insist on using it: GodMode9 can easily re-partition/format your SD
=====================
(Home)-button → MoreSD format menuRedNAND size (min)

It is possible to backup the NAND before any change has been done with the ntrboot method. Instead of booting SafeB9SInstaller, you have to boot GodMode9 and can backup the unchanged NAND. If you want it absolutely clean you would have to answer GodMode9's first question about the embedded essentials backup with "No". Such a backup cannot be opened with ninfs without providing the encryption keys.

If your console is in a known "good" state removing B9S works fine. I have done it a few times for testing purposes concerning this topic. This is one of the reasons why keeping an early NAND-image is important. If you ever want to undo the process (not a good idea as B9S has no downsides), it will work fine from after restoring a known good backup (created directly after or even before installing B9S).

Thank you for the reply!

Such a backup cannot be opened with ninfs without providing the encryption keys.

I want an absolutely clean copy of my sysNAND, then I dont really care what I do from there. I like the idea of leaving sysNAND alone and playing with emuNAND because I bricked a wii back in the day trying to update.

So, I don't understand what you said (yet) however, I have my direction. to get a 100% clean nand dump I want to use the ntrboot method, enter GodMode9 and answer "No" to the first question about the embedded essentials backup.

From here I'd just need to save that backup (and the encryption keys I get later ) so that if I ever want to revert to a clean backup (without B9S and all the other stuff I install) I can.

If was I said is correct I understand what to do now. I just need to find some documentation on ntrboot method and go from there. I'll probably just mod my sysNAND as long as I have a 100% clean backup I can revert to later.

That won’t happen with a 3DS. In the worst case Luma is incompatible to a firmware update and you have to wait for a Luma update.

Given that the backup is not corrupted you could undo everything any time. Don’t skip the SD test at the beginning of the guide: https://3ds.hacks.guide/
Once you have a clean backup you should definitely answer “Yes” to the embedded backup the second time booting GodMode9. It is an important safety feature. Create a second NAND image when the guide tells you to do the backup (or even before updating the official firmware – whatever you prefer).

You can follow the guide choosing the ntrboot path normally up to this point:
https://3ds.hacks.guide/installing-boot9strap-(ntrboot)
Doing ntrboot with the flashcart and the magnet starts the file boot.firm in the root of the SD. Normally this is the renamed SafeB9SInstaller.firm – in your case it should be the renamed GodMode9.firm. Everything should be like explained in the guide.
Once the clean NAND backup is done you can load the not renamed installer from within GodMode9 – which is a good idea because ntrboot takes some tries and this way you won’t have to do it again.

(Sorry my SD on the test machine is full of different .firm payloads)

Ah, this looks much easier than I thought It would be. Thank you for all your help! I'll probably do it tonight/tomorrow.

Rename GodMode9.firm to boot.firm (leaving SafeB9SInstaller.firm alone) then take a couple paranoid clean backups on different sd cards, then continue with the process using godmode to boot SafeB9SInstaller.firm when the guide calls for it, taking another "good enough but not 100% clean" backup when told to do so.

Thank you!!!!

When people say "you can't downgrade from fw 11.4" do they just mean actual downgrades via CIA changes? Presumably you can flash an older NAND if you want to?

Ya, older nand backups that are lower firm will downgrade the console. It just depends which one you have. The newer models have more a set lowest firmware and will go screwy if you try to use one lower than its compatible with.

Okay I also may be able to help you on this one what were you doing before this happened?
I followed your instruction and was able to use homebrew launcher ...i accessed the fbi and tried to install cias but there were some errors and i couldn't install them ..so i tried to use other apps on the homebrew launcher there was a doom game on it so ran it and when i quit the game the error popped up and every time i tried to turn on my 3ds this error pops up..but i am abe to accesss my 3ds with write-protection enabled on my sd card...should i just format my sd card and install homebrew again...
