Ubisoft delays Watch_Dogs Legion, other major titles

The Last of Us Part 2 isn't the only game facing a delay today, as Ubisoft has pushed back the release date of a number of its major upcoming titles. Three games have been delayed, including Watch_Dogs Legion, Rainbox Six Quarantine, and Gods & Monsters, all of which were announced at this year's E3. Each of the aforementioned games was originally slated for an early 2020 launch, and now will be releasing in the 2020-2021 fiscal year. These delays are due to the combined effects of Ubisoft's Ghost Recon Breakpoint being considered a critical failure, along with the much-enjoyed, though lower-than-projected sales of Tom Clancy's The Division 2. Yves Guillemot, the CEO of the company, stated that Ghost Recon Breakpoint lacked the development time to allow for a title that could have enough innovation or qualities that make for a good game, saying that while their upcoming games already have "high potential", Ubisoft wants to ensure that these titles will offer the best experience possible for players.

While each of these games already has a strong identity and high potential, we want our teams to have more development time to ensure that their respective innovations are perfectly implemented so as to deliver optimal experiences for players. This decision will have a very significant impact on our financial results for this fiscal year and goes against our recent successes in building a more stable development model. However, it is in line with our strategy to maximize the future value of our brands for the long-term benefit of our employees, players and shareholders.

The two recent failures they had weren't mere "open worlds", they were multiplayer "live services." Its questionable whether making Division 2 rather than ramping up Division 1 DLC made any sense, and even more questionable turning Ghost Recon into a poor Division clone and releasing it in the same year. You can't have so many live service games running at once and expect them all to do well, especially if they happen to be so similar to each other. They can't just copy a single live service template and expect that to yield multiple long-lasting games the same way they can effectively recycle the open world single player template for games people toss after a few months.

Yesterday was not a good day for Ubisoft. I'm not even excited for a single one of those games that got delayed.

I actually don't mind Watchdogs Legion being pushed back. If I remember correctly when it was announced it was slated for same release window as Cyberpunk is, now that wouldn't be good at all for anyone.
