You're wrong. A modded N3DSXL can get me more money from the original price.
Every console out there can be modded. It aint nothing special anymore especially at this time of how long the 3ds console has been out there. Aswell since freeshop was long killed there aint nothing special that way either. Either way I would rather buy a new console off the shelf than one used already.

Exactly! That's why I wanted a new Switch off the shelf or bought from Amazon ASAP.

That's fine. I can just sell it for either those prices from the original price I bought it at.

Here's where I'm trying to get you to understand your asking price is too high or not a good value for a (smart) buyer.

1. I go on Nintendo eBay store and pick up a refurbished n3DSXL Galaxy edition for $120 and pay the FL state tax of 6% (adjust your rates for whichever state you live in). My total is $128 for basically a like-brand new system. Not only is shipping is free, I get a limited time off $25 eBay coupon, so now my total is around $102. Let's say I don't want the Galaxy but decide to go with the regular black model because I'm a colorist who finds purple to be fugly. (For anyone who thinks I'm bad mouthing about the galaxy edition, my actual n3DSXL is a galaxy btw... This is just for pretend scenario.) My current total is $128.

2. I receive the system but still need to somehow install custom firmware onto this bad boy. Let's say I totally suck at following directions or am too lazy to do the free hacking method, seedminer, so I decide to go with ntrboot. I'm also a stingy person who doesn't feel like shelling out lots of money. Although my first choice of ntrboot capable flashcart would have been the $5 R4iSHDC series, long time 3DS homebrew users recommend going with the $20 R4i Gold 3DS Plus if I know what's good for me in having a trouble-free hacking experience. My total now is $148.

3. The only thing I'm missing to make my n3DSXL worthwhile is that I need to get a big enough micro SD card to go on a pirate bonanza so I can purchase all the games I ever could from Nintendo eShop. I decide to get the largest micro SD card that has the best GB/$ ratio in case I want to someday use that card on my future Nintendo Switch (Lite). I first decided to go with the Micro Center 256 GB sd card for $26, bringing my total to $174. I eventually decide against Micro Center even though they have a stellar reputation selling computer parts at fair prices, so instead I settle with this SanDisk 256 GB sd card for $38 because that brand is all about the flash memory bizznish. Even though I could have easily built a CFW'ed n3DSXL with a 256 GB card setup for $128 if I really wanted to, my final tally is $186.

Compared to your $150 (+ $10-20 = $160-170), that extra $26 buys me these peaces of mind:
  • A hardly used (if at all) system. Build quality is backed up to be free of defectives by Nintendo or warranty exchange.
  • A system that is guaranteed to not be banned.
  • No software or 3DS firmware issues from improper CFW setup.
You have to sell at such a price that's low enough to offset those above build advantages and concerns when it comes to 2nd hand ownership, or you'll just end up wasting your money, time, and effort trying to sell a product that no one finds to be appealing (enough).

You're telling me to start lower and add price to the 64GB MicroSD Card already in the 3DS to tally the total and adding shit tons of games on it?

I'm telling you to put yourself in the mindset of typical buyers asking, "Why would anyone want to buy my n3DSXL over options B, C, D, etc?"

For uninformed buyers not concerned about custom firmware and can't be arsed to go pirate their own games don't have leftover funds for Nintendo eShop purchases, you might be able to sell the n3DSXL with the 64 GB micro SD card and tons of preinstalled popular games for $130. However, those who are knowledgeable about this sort of stuff will not factor in the cost of softmods (custom firmware & games) if they can do it or get it themselves; they are shopping by material hard goods only.

64 GB micro SD cards these days go for around $12, although most opt to pay a little more (~$20) for a 128 GB if they plan to go for big capacity. If you were to follow the approach I laid out from my above post:
  • $128 (refurb n3dsxl, included tax, free ship) + $12 (64gb micro sd) = $140
  • You're at a disadvantage selling anywhere near $140 because your n3DSXL + SD card are considered used with an unknown history compared to (more or less) brand new.
Ugh... Then what should I do to keep the listing alive since eBay hates non-legit games and only prefers bought legit games? I would have to create a NEW NNID and purchase games on it.
The moment you try selling your system as having custom firmware with explicit proof that it has tons of pirated games, someone can file a report against your listing to have eBay remove it.

If you hide the fact your n3DSXL has CFW but don't list or show Luma3DS in your auction, a buyer can file a claim that you sold them a item "not as described" if they argue on the basis of expecting a stock/unmodified system. eBay could easily refund the money to that buyer, allow that person keep your n3DSXL, and leave you hanging with nothing for all that trouble.

***

I suggest you don't sell on eBay either because it's possible for the buyer to file a claim that your n3DSXL arrived to him/her damaged, they request a refund, and that person sends you back their broken n3DSXL or an actual stone brick. You get robbed of your money and n3DSXL. As long as a tracking number is provided to eBay that shows the buyer sent something (anything or even nothing) back to you, eBay almost always sides with the buyer over the seller when it comes to claims.

I wouldn't do that, digital games are close to worthless - you'd be throwing money away.

I would just list it somewhere that has free classifieds, and relist it every few days or weeks for less money until someone's interested. Good luck!

Thanks. You're right. I should just sell it somewhere else for ONLY at least $100. Unless people are willing to spend a bit more or slightly less in a bid war.

Hello @ all,
i am long time away now from doing stuff with a 3ds. I wanted to buy someone a new 2dsxl as gift and put luma on it.
Can i just buy one safely and be able to mod it ? What would i need ? i only have an old gateway card blue and a friend has a r4 gold pro revolution from 2014 (printed on card). Or are those cards not compatible anymore for the newest models ?
Thanks for your help pushing me in the right direction :)

Custom firmware can be installed on all 2|3DS models up to the latest firmware. For N2DSXL there are two easy options:
  • ntrboot (works on all models, all firmware version)
  • update to the latest firmware followed by Seedminer
Complete instructions on the guide: https://3ds.hacks.guide/

Gateway Blue has been blocked on some pretty low firmware as far as I know… but once you have Luma3DS this does not matter anymore because the whitelist checks are disabled. A flashcart from 2014 should work on any stock system as the last blocking attempts were in December 2013 [https://www.3dbrew.org/wiki/7.0.0-13]

If you are asking about the ntrboot compatibility refer to The ultimate list of NTRBoot compatible flashcards and [The guide] ntrboot.

I just got a 128 gb sd card, so I wanted to transfer from my 64 gb sd card. I formatted the 128 gb sd card using guiformat and backed up my old sd card. Only problem is when I go to copy my old files to the new sd card, I keep running into the error, error 0x80070570 when the cmd folder from old sd card tries to transfer. The error is a corruption error. I know the folder and files aren't corrupted because I checked it. So what should I do?

@SudoNara, test the hardware condition of your 128 GB sd card. It could be a fake or counterfeit.
  1. Copy everything off the card over to a computer.
  2. Quadruple reformat.
  3. Full Write + Verify the empty card in H2testw (windows), F3X (Mac), or F3 (Linux).
Should you find out yours is bad, return it for a refund, and check my signature for a replacement (test it before using).

The card works in my phone. It's a Samsung sd card. I've already done all of those test. I'm just going to get a regular 128 gb micro sd card from Sandisk. The Samsung one must not be compatible in some way. I've transferred from a 32 gb to a 64 gb 4 months without any issue. Both cards were Sandisk.
