Homebrew Any way to bypass updates while retaining download play?

I have a 3ds, and I use download play frequently. I am running luma cfw and system version 11.8. Is it safe to update, or should I bypass the update? Will download play still work?

Update to Luma3DS v9.1 or higher and update 3ds to latest
