My friend's dock started getting really hot after a minute or so when connected to power and the USB ports were not working, so I took it home(with his permission, obviously) and decided to take a look. After opening it up and doing some testing, I found out that what was heating up was the VIA Labs VL210 USB 3.0 Hub Controller chip, which after about 2-3 seconds gets too hot to the touch.
He has never done any sort of modding on his dock/switch, never connected anything problematic, only gc adapters that work just fine with other switches/docks. The solution is probably to just replace everything, but I'm still curious to know what happened/is happening in this chip to make it heat so much and make the USB ports not work at all, no signal and no power goes to them. Does anyone have any ideas?
