I am thinking of stocking up on preowned WiiUs as it seems to be the best way to play GameCube, Wii, and WiiU games. Because of the hdmi and no emulation errors, the games run exactly as intended.

so ten years from now will I want some spare WiiUs? Will I need some spare gamepads or power supplies?

Gamepads die/get broken. If you really want to be able to run Wii U games well into the future, get as many of those as you reasonable can. If the Wii U ever gets collectible in the future, that will be the one component that is hard to find in good working condition.

It may be the best way to run (on one system) GC, Wii and Wii U games, but since there are few Wii U exclusive anymore, most of us just go with a Wii with component cables. The picture is slightly better for Wii/GC games than via the Wii U's HDMI, there's no compatibility issues, and there are actual Gamecube ports on our older Wiis. None of the Wii U exclusive appeal to me at all nor does that tablet, so I'll be skipping that generation entirely. If the Wii U had been able to properly upscale Wii games (like Dolphin) I would have bought one on launch day. But the fact is that my 2007 Wii with component cables (and 480p fix) gives better output for Wii games than your Wii U via HDMI. You obviously want to play Wii U games and so your decision is easy too. But get more gamepads to ensure your Wii U experience well into the future.

I only have one and I'll probably never take it back out of its box.

Honestly I can't stand the clunky gamepad they make you use.

Probably the only innovative title they had on the thing that utilized both screens was starfox zero - and that game was a nightmare to control.

Right now I own 4 Wii U consoles (2 boxed; all hacked by using a DS game) and 8 Wii U gamepads (all of them in 9/10 or 9.5/10 condition; bought at ebay at 55-60€ each a couple of years ago). As well as 5 Wii U pro controllers, 3 GC controller adapters, 4 GC gamepads, 1 LAN adapter and 9 Wiimote plus controllers (I have more stuff but I think it's enough). All of them original. I found another preowned boxed Wii U in good condition with 5 games (Splatoon, Mario Kart, Angry Birds Star Wars, Fifa13 and Wii Party U) for 90€ so I will probably buy it today and sell the games. I hope to get back at least 20€. The Wii U is going to be my last system and I'm already a retro player. I have 90+ Wii U and 90+ GC retail games I'm playing slowly (last month I completed Star Fox Adventures and RE Code: Veronica).

This site is crazy. I wrote a longer text from mobile. And it was just cut-off. WTF?

So. to replace the upper text. it should read "No, actually they are even more sturdy than e.g. a Wiimote (i know a lot of guys with broken Wiimotes, but none with a broken Gamepad currenly, since it´s very hard to severely damange a WiiU-Gamepad, remember? No stick-drifting? Pretty much only the Wifi-chip can get damaged. Or if you let it fall in water. But then it´s your own issue).

I own 3 gamepads. None is broken currently. And none ever was (in 5 years of usage).

I have several (older) Wiimotes with issues though (the cable got lose after about 5 years, so the connection between an addon-cable/Pro-Controller etc is lose).

The WiiU´s cpu doesn´t use SRAM-cache (cough i only mean the PowerPC) and thus it will last even longer than processors with use standard SRAM-cache-cells. Sram today is known to get broken/damaged fast. Well, typical range is within 5-10 years of operation i mean.

Sram-products include Ram (DRAM-cells use sram-cache after all xD), GPUs and cpus.

And the Disc-drive of a WiiU is also way more sturdy than that of a Wii, i found out years ago.

I allways had problems with my old 2006-Wii, which started to produce bad disc-sounds after 3 years. And it was nearly failing after 4 years. But i simply stopping using it, which is one reason why i got a WiiU after all.

The WiiU uses a way-higher quality disc-drive which is much more heavy for reasons. Because of more sturdyness. It´s motor won´t get problems after 5 years of operation. And it´s laser-pickup (yeah i once examined that) is also of higher quality.

Finally i can only conclude that you can scratch a WiiU-gamepad if you use it for many sessions. And that is easy to replace with a 5$ touchscreen-foil/ts-replacement. The gamepad was made to replace these things easily after all.

Personally i own 3 WiiUs since about 5 years (i was lucky, since somebody got me one. Then my gf got one. And finally i bought another own WiiU and that in total is 3 now, since my gf no longer wants to use it, since she´s just into "pokemon" you know?). I own 3 Gamepads as well.

And i aim to soon buy 3 more WiiU-console-replacement units soon.

Just for personal security-reasons though. Not because i think they will fail. But because i aim to replace a lot of devices with these things.

Edit: I want to add something- the WiiU personally for me- easily can replace the Wii. The WiiU is simply like a "Super-Wii". It can do many things a Wii will never be able to after all.

But the TRUE reason i got my OWN WiiU (one was a present for me, one my gf got, and stopped using, so now it´s mine as well) - and thus now i´m owning 3 of it is quality guys.

It´s a high-quality-device.

And these things are rare to find today in a world where everybody concentrates on producing stuff, that will fail/overheat in the next...3 years. My WiiUs never overheated (and i operated them at up to 30°C room-temps), they never had an issue. No disc-drives started to "spin around like crazy" (like on my old Wii) and i also never had issues with Wiimotes, not being recognized by my console because of Wiimotes dying.

And yeah- currently i can say: I played even for much longer time-span with my WiiU/WiiUs than i did with my Wii (the Wii literally was just a MonsterHunter/Mario/Zelda/Smash-Bros-Box after all, in a time, where i made my heavy gaming on my PCs. But the WiiU replaced my PC as my gaming-machine and i started learning to program things and found, it´s time for a change in hardware in my house).

Wait, Wii U are real?
I only thought it was a joke prob made by Nintendo to play with us.

You forgot to add you think it was an "addon" that you can simply attach to your Wii!

Mom? Can i have that nice tablet-addon for my Wii please?

I only have 1. I don't see the need to stockpile/hoard Wii U's incase I need them. If I need one in the near future, I'll get one then. I mean, they aren't in short supply, there are 13 million of them out there.

I do think it was an underrated system though.

I sold mine after having fun with it, retro gaming is kinda overrated anyway.
Wii U... retro? What? I get that it can play retro games, but the system is not "retro". That system came out only 7 years ago.

Actually Nintendo only produced like (rumoured) 20 mio of the WiiU dude- and about 14 mio were sold (maybe now 15 mio). That means: 5-7 millions left since most people don`t sell it. If these 5-7 mio are gone (might happen in next 3-5 years). They are gone. NIntendo stopped producing WiiUs long ago. And the fabs also stopped producing WiiU-chips many years even before Nintendo stopped producing more WiiUs.

and like i said: i am buying another 3 next year alone. Lol. That means i will own SIX then.

And i´ll order some more touchscreen-replacements as well. Since that´s the only thing which i damage on my gamepads with too much pressure. lol. I scratch them. It takes 5 years though to scratch such a touchscreen, if you don´t abuse it.

So yeah. In my case i found out, it happened because some tiny sand-particle from the ground got on the gamepad and i smeared it on without even seeing it. Shame.

But like i said: Nothing lasts forever. Buy a replacement-part for 5-10$ and go on playing.

But the WiiU for me isn´t just a gaming-machine. It will replace my working-machines dude. I am aiming for much more interesting stuff doing with it in the near future.

And this is why i need 3 more.

And it´s also good to order some cheap Wifi-gamepad-chips as well, since i heard, they can fail to operate after 3-5 years as well.

Depending on your Wifi-usage of the WiiU. I don`t use Wifi, so i´m not that affected. I use the simple Lan-adapter combined with PowerLan which i got like 10 years ago (no, not the PowerLan, only the Lan-adapter of Wii) from the Wii.

Woah, i just saw on ca032769's sig that he has "32 total modded Wii's right now for just myself".

xD 32? That sounds like in old days "WiiU is just 20 gamecubes-duck-taped together" (or Wiis). Maybe he tried to do that?

or maybe he´s just storing it for...well. "bad days"? To be able to play locally together. As you know: If you use Nintendon´t now you can play with many Wiis together. Or with PCs. Or with Gamecubes or WiiUs.
