Hardware Is my right joycon rail dead

Hey!

My right joycon won't detect in connected mode. I've tried updating firmware on it, reseating the rail connector, etc etc. The plug to the ribbon cable is slightly messed upp (inside the joycon). I assumed this was the issue, but then I checked the voltage going to pin 4... It's at 6.9-7v when plugged into the switch. Is this normal? I thought that pin should be at 5v. Joycon does not charge.

The Switch however responds to RCM mode on pin 7 connected to 10, so those two pins work.

Don't have another joycon to test with.

It was the joy-con, new one worked!
Why is it reading 7v instead of 5v though?

Just for case: DO NOT RESET YOU CONSOLE!!!
You will have a brick.

What? Why would I get a brick because of a high no-load voltage reading?

No, because if something wrong with circuit and you will not be able to fix it, after factory reset fist test it has to pass: physical Joy-Con connection...
if you will not pass it it's kind of brick...

Sounds like your right joycon was dying. Glad a new one solved your problem.

Ah ok! But new joycon worked, so I assume thats where the issue was

High voltage likely due to nothing being plugged in?

I totally expected this to be a "I've been jamming foil, paperclips, screwdrivers and other random metal detritus into my expensive precision electronic equipment for months, and now for some weird inexplicable reason there's a problem" type thread. Glad it wasn't, and glad you got sorted

Probably. The voltage will drop when there is a load, but that's a pretty big drop.
