Introducing Developer roles

newsy.png

If you've been browsing the forum, you might have noticed that there's a little something new! A few users are now sporting lovely sea-green tags, denoting their status as developers. These users have created notable homebrew projects, or have contributed in a major way to the general hacking scene. We wanted to appreciate their efforts, along with many of our other talented and dedicated developers, by offering a new user class: Developer.

This new role won't have any different permissions from normal users, and will be used purely for the sake of respecting project creators, and to show developers who are active on GBAtemp. We've initially chosen five developers to display this role, though other users are welcome to apply for a Developer tag, by contacting a Supervisor. (@Issac @Chary or @BORTZ). There are a few guidelines we've established, in order to keep things organized: You'll need to PM a Super, and explain your previous contributions of significant homebrew/projects, linking to the respective download link (GitHub, GBAtemp Download Center, etc), and any "official" thread on GBAtemp itself. You'll also need to be trustworthy; a Developer role is not an endorsement of trustworthiness from GBAtemp and its staff, though we want to ensure that any applicants have not created "bricking" software, or other homebrew that could be considered dangerous to users' systems. In addition, for the aforementioned reason and for the sake of transparency, we'd like for a majority of a developer's projects to be open source. This also is to protect users from software which could contain dangerous content. However, we do understand that the occasional piece of software needs to be closed-source in certain circumstances, so if given a good enough reason, alongside a previously outstanding history, we'll be willing to allow such.

We want to thank all GBAtemp developers for the hard work that they do, and we hope that everyone enjoys the new user class!

The title isn't an award though, so there's no shame in asking for it. Nor is it an endorsement, it's simply a way to let people see, easily, that the person is a developer contributing the the hacking scene in some way.
EDIT: You should *ALWAYS* be careful of what you do to your system, and who to trust. With or without a banner!
When you put it that way, I guess I will be making my case and submitting a pm shortly

Another point as to why users should have to ask for the banner is because a solid 70% of that list are inactive on the forum. What's the point in giving them a role to show they're developers if they're not around to offer support? It'd just be sat on their inactive profiles with no real use.

I mostly agree with you about this, but maybe they'd become more active if they saw their new role?
It's unlikely, but who knows.

The main reason I put inactives on that list is because they are definitely developers, and it would feel strange leaving them off (smea is a hard one to skip especially!).
Don't take the list as a formal request on their behalf, I just wanted to do it for recognition purposes. That's why I didn't tag them and create a shitstorm.
Another good reason for that list is it might help someone make their case for their tag. Especially if several other people recommend them in this thread or elsewhere.

(and I left out mrnbayoh, kill me XD)

Yeah, I don't doubt that will happen ;)
We have a group of staff members to discuss and "investigate" if the 13 year old developer isn't an obvious choice :P

I didn't say to force it upon them, more like reach out to them first you know? A title like that to be requested doesn't feel right imo, I don't know how to say, it's like a weird mix of modesty gone wrong.
at least I understood what you were getting at bud :)

Don't want to stir up trouble but since someone asked - why did it take us so long for this?
As a matter of fact, it is difficult to reward/highlight one particular category of contributor and not another - what about cheat creators? translation project authors? firmware hackers? etc.
Some of us were opposed to the 'Developer' title because we thought it would be opening pandora's box, so to speak. However after a long period of inaction, trying to figure out a better idea, we just thought 'okay lets do it anyway', better do something than nothing.
