I picked these babies up from Amazon yesterday!

I have to say that I'm impressed!

Pros
- Wireless
- Easily synched
- Gyro support
- NFC support (for Amiibo)
- Basic rumble support

Cons
- The face buttons could be a bit higher. They're nearly flushed
- No IR camera
- Purple L and R buttons would have been nice
- ZL and ZR practically require your fingers to be at the edge for the press to register.

Overall, this is a very servicable set of Joycons and may end up being my favorite controller of all time. Hopefully there will be a version 2 of this controller with raised face buttons and IR support. If you want to buy a set for yourself, you can get them at this link: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07Y4NZQNQ?ref=ppx_pt2_dt_b_prod_image

Is the d-pad any good? Can you compare to the Hori one?

I see charging ports, does it not charge via the rail? When you attach the joy-cons, does it register in Horizon as being attached or is it always treated as wireless?

* It can charge on and off the rails.

* The joycons are recognized as being on the rails in Horizon OS

* Just like the face buttons, the D-Pad, sadly is nearly flush. That said, it works well and has little to no chance of being able to accidentally press all four buttons at once.

I like the idea, but god those things are ugly

Everything is off - it's like the uncanny valley of gamecube controllers

The colors are wrong, the relative size of the buttons is wrong - that dpad is larger than every other component

Odd that they rotated the octagons on the control sticks... makes it practically useless for Smash if you prefer using a gc controller over a pro controller.

The octagons are useless either way. The sticks are made similar to the ones on a official JoyCon. You'll never feel them (octagons).

The octagons are very important for Smash, that's like 70% of the reason why people swear by using Gamecube controllers. The original orientation of the octagons is important for Smash because it makes it much harder to misinput an attack, which could be the difference between winning and losing a game.

I get that. In my case I didn't get these for Smash. I use GameCube style controllers for EVERYTHING! I love the button setup and never have to look down when I'm playing a game because I know where every button is located. Now that we have GameCube Joycons I have to say that there is a high chance this JoyCon pair might be my favorite controller ever. I really just wish for raised buttons, analog triggers and that IR camera for completion.

Right, makes sense. Hope they work out well for you!

Spawnwave just got his hands on these and did his usual teardown.

TLDW: pretty good, has all official joy-con functionality, except the face buttons aren't raised enough (too flush) and the triggers are way too hard to press.

D-pad and buttons are the wrong color.
I expected it just to be a custom shell, but no. That actually looks pretty nice. Can't imagine it will be good for every game though. The GC button layout is pretty unique, and works best when the games are designed for it. But for games that primarily use the A button it's great. For games that use B and Y, you're gonna be moving your finger a lot, and pressing both at the same time is tricky.
And the B button on the GC layout is so tiny, games that use it as the main button suffer a bit. Not a big deal though, it didn't keep me from enjoying Wind Waker.
I always did like the octagonal shape of the GC stick. Shame they have gone away from that design as it made it way easier to move exactly in the 8 directions. I wonder if they're using actual (knockoff) GC sticks for it. The design looks like it's slightly different but I'm not sure.
They're probably not, those sticks were made for a much bigger controller and probably wouldn't even fit into the small form factor of the JoyCons (mainly thickness)
