Hardware So, now that v2 is out... does it offer more stable performance?

Picking up a Switch soon, but to be honest my local retailer is offering a very tempting deal for a v1, and I could take or leave the bigger battery. But is performance a bit closer to ideal on v2? Does v2 stay closer to target resolution and framerate than v1 considering the new chipset?

V2 runs at the exact same clocks as V1. Almost everything performs the same, V2 just uses less power for the same effect, and therefore stays cooler, the battery last longer, and the fan spins less.

If you really want performance improvement, you have to find an exploitable V1 and overclock it.

It's not likely the V1 you would buy is exploitable, so no CFW.
V2 runs at same clock (=equal framerate etc) but does it with less power consumption.

That's what I asked, the only exploit so far is that first one right?

Clocks are not the only consideration here, architecture IPC improvements are. Does anyone know for sure if they have led to slightly closer to target improvements?

Yes but Logan IPC =/= Mariko IPC. That's why I'm asking.

That would be pretty odd and is hard to believe. Because if it was it wouldn't be in use at all.

There have been a ton of frametime and resolution comparisons done, there is almost never a measurable difference. Digital Foundry has found a few cases of mild differences in certain games which they want to attribute to Mariko having memory binned for faster timings, and therefore can hit its target more reliably when downclocked vs the OG, but these are rare exceptions like the Korok forest in BotW.

In no way is that odd or hard to believe, newer architecture has, without exception in the history of human kind and computing, brought some kind of improvement.

Because if it was it wouldn't be in use at all.

I can't find any logic in this statement.

And I won't be putting on CFW until a Switch Pro surfaces, too much stuff to enjoy online. Is the switch still limited to that first exploit with the jig?
You can still use online just fine in legit games, just use an emuNAND for CFW and keep that offline.

It is possible that in the future if/when v2 is hacked, it would be possible to overclock the new SoC far beyond what is currently possible though, given that the cooling setup can handle much more heat than Mariko produces at stock speeds.

Logan? The Switch doesn’t use that
Outside of the die shrink, both the CPU and GPU are (almost) identical to the old systems and will not perform any differently at the same clocks. The RAM is a bit better which helps a tiny bit in some titles, but the difference won’t be noticeable.

v1's chip is Logan architecture.
Logan is the code name of the Tegra K1, the chip in the V1 Switch is codenamed Erista and the one in the V2 switch is called Mariko. Btw there is no actual perf benefit from the Switch V2 only difference is that when memory bandwidth is the bottleneck you could see a 1 to 2 frame upgrade which is not worth it when you could get a V1 switch and OC it. The cause of the similarity in perf is that both consoles are underclocked to the same clocks.

I've heard Logan = switch elsewhere, maybe even from DF? so there may be fairly widespread misinformation out there. But yeah Logan is actually the K1, which is a distinct architecture. Both Erista and Mariko belong to the X1 architecture, same instruction sets, just a smaller die and some improvements to memory speed in the latter.

I would recommend OP buy the v1 switch if you think a pro is likely, and have hacking interest down the road. When the pro hits you can turn your v1 into a hacking device, assuming its unpatched. Chances of the later Switch models being hacked are looking pretty poor, so might as well grab one while they are still readily available.

Yeah i remember DF said that one or two times before.

So 2 fps only, but has anyone tested to see if things like dynamic res hold better on v2? The improved IPC has to do something, irrespective of being similarly clocked.

Yeah that'll be where I got the bad info. They even showed clips of Wolverine Origins to make the Logan+Mariko connection lmao.
If I buy a new v1 today it won't have the jig exploit, though. It will be a new one I'm picking up. Hopefully the next big exploit is usable on all units.
The hacking scene takes time, and I have no doubt in the abilities of the insane talents in the community. Also the scene is active, unlike PS4. It's just a matter of time IMO.

GPU performance isn’t any different when running at the same clocks, so no, dynamic resolution won’t be affected at all.

If you end up buying an Erista and it’s on 4.1.0 you could hack it immediately with Deja Vu. If you get one on 5.0.0-8.0.1 and ever want to hack it, KEEP IT THERE, those firms will eventually be hackable. Anything beyond 8.0.1 will likely never be hackable on patched Erista units and Mariko units.

I'm not buying to hack it, will not want to do that for a good year yet.

I also can't believe people still use the word 'never' around here. I see it used constantly here, then six months down the line someone has figured something out. Latest example is PSOne 'never' being fully playable on a 3DS. Then someone came out with a whole new graphics engine like two weeks ago. These developers are insanely talented, have some faith.

I know. I’m saying if you ever want to hack it you’ll need it on those firms. 8.1.0 onwards is hopeless and has zero useful bugs.

SciresM himself has said 8.1.0 onward is hopeless.

You say you understand, then go on to completely miss my point.

8.01 and beyond will be hackable... given time. Such is the nature of emulation/ cfw devices.
