Yes, you need the latest beta. Backgrounds are working differently than in 5.2.0, introducing the platform.ini.
Maybe I should update the 1st post with this information

Already updated to the beta, most of the backgrounds show up, with the exception of Wii,homebrew,Gamecube,Emunand and NES, what should I do?
The magic numbers of the NES emulator and source menu match

How do I switch between the layouts (e.g. to the Emulation Station style source menu? The one in the YouTube thumbnail).

Outstanding work, this will be the theme I use going forward.
I'm not sure if I understand your question.
So, please correct me if I'm wrong, you don't want the base tier to be in "Hyperspin" style, but in "Emulation Station" style like all the others, right?
While viewing the base tier, you can press the 1 or 2 buttons on the wiimote to cycle through the different flows. But you will need to remove the base tier background (tier1.png) at the bottom of source_menu.ini (under [GENERAL] section)

I don't have my wii with me right now, to clarify I want to use the theme in the YouTube thumbnail (this: )

Ok maybe you didn't install the ini files for source menu tiers. It's the second download link in the 1st post.
You get Wii, arcade, handhelds, retro computer and retro consoles tiers, just like in the video.
Backup your source_menu.ini before copying these new files beacuse it will be overwritten

edit: you'll also need to enable sourceflow
To do so, click on the settings button (the gear icon) go to page 12 and click on Source Menu Settings
From there set 'enable sourceflow' to ON

How did you get sourceflow to respect the order of your source_menu.ini (Wii, Arcade, Retro…). On the default theme and a custom source_menu.ini of my own, it orders them alphabetically. I am not the only one.

You should be able to push B and the + button together (as shown at the bottom of the source menu background) to change the sort order. It switches between sorting alphabetically and sorting by button number.

Ahhh! I see, so i removed data_on_usb setting but didn't realize that you could still set paths/dirs to usb manually. so in your case i just need to add a default dir to wiiflow lite ini so you can manually change it.

or re-add data_on_usb setting. I just figured most people just kept their wiiflow data folders on the same device as the apps folder.
What about this issue? is it possible to fix it please?

Edit
It seems it's already fixed with dir_backgrounds setting in ini file. Thanks, I'll test it later.

Finally got this working and it looks fantastic! I'm starting to add emulators and artwork that wasn't included but I noticed that Nintendo Game&Watch is included in your build yet I cannot find an emulator for it on Wii anywhere, do you have a copy?

EDIT: just noticed somebody reposted it for me on another thread if anyone else is looking heres the link

Been experimenting with sorting this by company name instead. Did custom graphics for backgrounds and a couple of missing systems. I’m building this for someone else, so I didn’t split up the arcade games - they don’t know the difference between CPS1, CPS2, etc. still a few systems to add by its coming along nicely.

sorry for the loud noise in the background - washer is running at the same time :)

This is really nice! It could be released as an alternate version with company names, or you could create a fork or a totally new theme:). Yes, arcade games don't really need to be separated

Added a bit of a retro feel to the front, felt like it was missing something.

Really nice!! Just the Arcade writing on main menu could lead to some confusion with Arcade games.
Yea that’s very true, I was thinking of a title but couldn’t come up with one haha. Anything is possible to be honest

No, sorry. I never used that emulator.
I've included in Rhapsodii Shima support for G&W and other systems not yet supported (like SuperGrafx) by wfl's platform.ini
You'll need to assign a unique magic number for G&W, and add it to platform.ini and to the G&W .ini plugin.

Ok, Im pretty sure the emulator is a core used through retroarch? But then I'm assuming I would have to throw the dol file into wii flow plugin location and create a configuration specifically for it. What a pain, but seeing that no Game & Watch covers exist, I'll take some time to get all 59 covers done, all going to be decent enough for art, but still show different games. I'll upload it in the future.

Yes it's retroarch. I think you may be missing the basics of how to set up wiiflow plugins.
I suggest you read the Wiiflowiki4 page, it contains all the needed info.
https://sites.google.com/site/wiiflowiki4/plugins-setup
https://sites.google.com/site/wiiflowiki4/source-menu-setup
There may be some outdated info, the G&W plugin isn't present in the Abz's masterpiece pack, you'll have to download Retroarch wii from retroarch's nightly builds (the stable releases are buggy)
here: https://buildbot.libretro.com/nightly/nintendo/wii/
If one version is not working test another one. RA's developers are not testing it on the wii, so we need to go through trial and error.
Also, don't mix plugins coming from different RA versions, there could be issues with cfg files. If you really need to do so, read Wiimpathy's tutorial on how to hex edit the plugins to make them create their own configuration files.

Edit (forgot last download link): https://gbatemp.net/threads/retroarch-one-configuration-file-per-emulator.545488/
