Sony announces the release of the PlayStation 5 for Holiday 2020

Rather than let rumors and leaks go wild, Sony has made it official: its next-gen console is named the PlayStation 5 and will hit stores in time for Holiday 2020. More details of the console have been revealed in an exclusive Wired article published today.

The article details that the PS5 will pack a solid-state drive which, system architect Mark Cerny tells Wired, will "turn loading time from a hassle to a blink". He also clarified on ray-tracing for fancy lighting and sound effects in 3D environments that it "is not a software-level fix" but that "there is ray-tracing acceleration in the GPU hardware”.

Physical games are back for the new PlayStation and will use 100GB optical disks which will be read by the console's optical drive that also serves as a 4K Bluray player. There is also a twist to installing games on the PS5 which will give players "finer-grained access to the data". This implies a more modular approach to installation like installing "just a game's multiplayer campaign, leaving the single-player campaign for another time, or just installing the whole thing and then deleting the single-player campaign once you've finished it".

Emphasis was also laid in the Wired article and by Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan's blog post on the console's new controller. The latter will replace the “rumble” technology with haptic feedback to allow players to "feel a broader range of feedback" and it will also adopt USB Type-C connector for cable play/charging. Its trigger buttons (L2/R2) will also pack what Sony is calling "adaptive triggers". "Developers can program the resistance of the triggers so that you feel the tactile sensation of drawing a bow and arrow or accelerating an off-road vehicle through rocky terrain. In combination with the haptics, this can produce a powerful experience that better simulates various actions," wrote CEO Jim Ryan. Wired also noted during their hands-on with a prototype that the controller features a microphone of some sort but still looks like a heavier PS4 controller. After playing through a few demos, Wired's writer said that the controller gave "distinct—and surprisingly immersive—tactile experiences".

Also of note, Wired talked to Marco Thrush, president of Bluepoint Games, the company behind the PS4's Shadow of the Colossus remake, who said "We're working on a big one right now. I'll let you figure out the rest."

You can read the full version of Wired's exclusive article linked below. What do you think of the PS5 from this new announcement? What more features would you like to see in the next-gen console? And what could Bluepoint Games possibly be working on? Share your thoughts with us below!

I imagine the triggers something more "next level" compared to the trigger button found on the GameCube Controller, in which you could press it only "50%". But this time something even more sensitive than that. I'm excited to see this new controller!

now I am uncertain whether I should upgrade my ps4 cfw to ofw or I should buy PS5 and play Persona 5 royale and FF7 on it. Is it worth to wait on PS4 cfw? I just recently bought a new laptop and could play most of the non-exclusives on my laptop, and my ps4 has been collecting dust.

Nintendo took this from Microsoft HD Rumble. Nintendo didn't invent the technology.

I never said they did, but they popularized it and made it a bigger focus. Same way with motion controls, Nintendo didn't invent it, but the Wii Mote got popular enough that Sony made its own because of them.

Actually the technology belongs to Immersion, for every console that has rumble features or haptic-feedback.

Not to mention, wasn't it Nintendo who called it rumble and then thereafter came the dualshock? :P
Not to get too technical into it, my point is clear here, it's clearly 'inspired', and that's not looking at other inspirations (more recently the Playstation Classic for example).

Holiday 2020...
So, what does that usually mean? Winter Holidays 2020? Spring 2020? Summer 2020?
I think nobody is surprised that the release is in 2020 - everyone expected that.

The thing is: FF7 Remake releases on 03.03.2020
I have been waiting for this game since the first "techdemo" for the PS3 was shown during an E3 Pressconference.
Now, I don't want to buy a PS4 just to play Death Stranding and the FF7 Remake - I had a PS4 and played all the good exclusives that interested me.

Please Sony - if you are somewhat smart: Release the PS5 near the release of FF7 Remake, or even better yet: Offer a bundle.
The remake, even though you can play it on PS4, could be a real system seller.
I know many people that are thinking about buying a PS5 (or PS4 if the bufget is low) just for that one game!
Improved load times, higher resolution and a locked 60fps is what I am expecting from this game beeing played on a PS5. And I want to experience this game with the best possible performance/graphics.

FF7 on the PSX was mind blowing back in the day.
I want to re-live that experience with the remake.

Please Sony - don't make me wait much longer than everyone else that still owns a PS4.

Holiday 2020 means winter 2020, so you'll be waiting 8-9 months.

I'm happy to hear about the 4k drive. My biggest gripe with my PS4 is the fact that I can't watch my Blu Ray movies in 4k and have to use my X1

I'd argue Nintendo and Microsoft both took it from Apple.

sure M$ had basic force-feedback in old sidewinder controllers but I'd say when it comes to "HD rumble" and tricking you into feeling something Apple started that in 2008 with some MacBook touchpads and later expanded it to the Taptic engine used in there phones, watch etc.
or to a lesser extent their 2005 mighty mouse which had force-sensing squeeze areas and an internal speaker to trick/emulate a mouse click

i think the moral of the story is everyone takes/steals from everyone else, all innovation is built standing on the shoulders of giants.

So who wants to bet on controller prices? $99? $119?

Also lol at "now you won't even have to install the single-player game!"

Also, I'd be willing to bet no PS1 Classics in their current form, if they show up at all (I would bet not). PS2 will get a few released on the PSN like they did on the PS4, and PS3 will get some remasters but no BC. Because Sony.

I always hated the "who did what first" line of thinking, what matters is who did what well, and it's those implementations that should become mainstream and widely adopted. We've seen endless arguments about this, "who came up with rumble" is just one of many permutations. Ultimately all of these things are usually based on off-the-shelf components, technology is usually already mainstream before it hits the gaming market.

I've really mulled it over and decided I'll just wait for the PS5 PRO given that the PS4PRO can play any title in the current generation and if ps5 has generation exclusive content it will be pretty limited at launch. Furthermore, ff7 remake is episodic and I really didn't want to get entrenched in an unfinished product. Once they make a bundle of the full ff7 game I'll purchase it on the best platform available (be it PC or PS).

As for the PS5, I might pick up a zero day console just to put in a closet for CFW but all PS exclusives that I really enjoy seem to come out on PC given enough time and the PC release often brings an improved experience (either in additional content, bundled content for lower price, or a modding community, not even mentioning the difference in playing on a current gen gaming laptop vs a home console). There's so much to play and choose from that I don't really mind waiting anymore. Given how much time I've devoted into the Nintendo Switch vs PS within the past two years, and how much I realized I enjoyed being able to play on the go, I'm curious to see if home consoles have any allure left for me during the next generation in gaming.

I already installed a 1TB samsung 860 EVO SSD in my PS4 PRO, so other than graphics I'm not expecting a massive load-time difference. I'd like to see people run the numbers once it releases though. It made a world of difference playing FF15. If it is significant enough for FF7 like it was for FF15, maybe that will be the incitement needed for others in my position.

good news then you'll be pleasantly surprised :D

PS4 Pro is still bottlenecked at SATA3 speeds.

the PS5 is going to have its SSD directly connected to PCIe lanes (similar to NVMe).

if you want to have a idea on loading times go look at Samsung SATA SSD's vs Samsung NVMe SSD's comparisons on PC
its still a huge difference on many games and will only become more so as assets continue to get larger.

Sounds neat, especially the adaptive triggers which could be quite promising depending on how much use they see, although I'm a little wary that the added complexity will just make the triggers more fragile than anything.

Also curious to see how the AMD SoC they'll be using works with ray tracing, especially considering earlier this year Lisa Su said ray tracing wasn't ready at all and gamers would see little benefit from it
