I won't argue with you there. The graphics is honestly one of my favorite for a 3DS game, but the battle system... is just disgusting.
Though that's just my opinion. I'm sure there are people who liked it.
Yea the combat needs some investment to get used to and even then it can be frustrating. But overall the music and general atmosphere of the game is really great. Im trying to find all the monthly costumes but no luck. I wonder if there is a save file with them all or are the ARs somewhere on the net?

Unfortunately, I have the blank-name error...and the NTR method isn't working for my 3ds. The NTR.cia installs, but it doesn't dump right with my firmware, says it's not compatible.
Is there another method to get around this? I read how a few people tried to change their region. Is there a simple way to do that without something risky like NAND dumping and such?

if you have luma, check out the locale emulation option.
it lets you change the region for individual games.

To use this feature, create a locale.txt inside /luma/titles/TID/ file. Edit this text file to include the region (JPN, USA, EUR, AUS, CHN, KOR, TWN) and language (JP, EN, FR, DE, IT, ES, ZH, KO, NL, PT, RU, TW) separated by space. For example, to play Pokémon Y in the Japanese language and region, I would place a locale.txt in /luma/titles/0004000000055E00 containing the contents JPN JP
There is no /titles/ folder in /luma/ .
It just has:
/payloads/
config

yes, the titles folder.
if you're supposed to place something in a folder, and the folder doesn't exist, you make the folder yourself.
unless you start modifying games there's no reason for that folder to be there.

So I have /luma/title/0004000000065C00/
In there is locale.txt
In locale:
JPN JP
Rebooted 3ds, held select, put X in the Enable game patching slot.
Home screen, load game, load savegame, still blank names.
that's where it went wrong.
the game saves the names to your save file, so it loaded the blank names instead of the ones in the game data.
you'll have to start a new game to get the names to show up.

1) I do own this game physically along with a Luma 3DS - and if I read correctly, I do not have to go the CIA route? I can put a .3ds translated file in my 3DS, enable game patching, then boot the game from the cart to see it translated? Is that how it works?
2) Now this is where the stupid question comes in, and I can already tell you're saying: "Why would anyone want to do that?" This is also unrelated to Deep Labyrinth. If I had a physical copy of dual destinies ace attorney (JP), could I put a .3ds file of the digital english game and have the cartridge boot to the English version? I adore physical media and if I can give myself the illusion of booting into an English copy, well, the very prospect of it gets my nippity nips extremely thick.
